However, if you are one who doesn\u2019t feel comfortable, we got your back. Negotiating doesn\u2019t need to be awkward, so here are some pointers to help build your confidence.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do your research \u2013 you will need to know what your position is paying in the location you applied. Websites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\">glassdoor.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salary.com\">www.salary.com<\/a> or even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.payscale.com\">www.payscale.com<\/a> can give you that information.<\/li>\n<li>Know what skills you have that are important to the employer and use that information to remind them how you would bring them value.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that it is ok to ask if there is room for negotiating. Without doing research, I turned it around and asked him what their salary cap would be. The range he gave was\u00a0much\u00a0higher than I would have given myself \u2014 and, when the offer came through, the final number was significantly more than I was previously making!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-3923-2-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3923-2-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3923-2-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Scenario B:<\/p>\n<p><em>The interviewer asks \u201cSo, what are your salary expectations?\u201d Or \u201cwhat\u2019s your salary history like?\u201d (Even though this question is now\u00a0outlawed in a handful of states since it has a tendency to perpetuate systemic wage gaps).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3923-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3923-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3923-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-headline panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-headline so-widget-sow-headline-default-068a513eee3f-3923\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><div class=\"sow-headline-container \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"sow-headline\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tSo How Do You Handle Both?\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"decoration\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"decoration-inside\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3923-4\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3923-4-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3923-4-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3923-4-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<ol>\n<li>For Scenario A, Remember that negotiation starts with a solid offer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re not in any kind of a position to negotiate until an offer is on the table. And unless you\u2019re a contractor or consultant pitching the company (your prospective\u00a0<em>client<\/em>), then they\u2019re the ones who should be making the first move on that front. You can say,<em> \u201cIs this a job offer?\u201d <\/em>If they say no, then say,<em> \u201cIf this were a job offer I am sure we both could come to a decision that would mutually benefit both of us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If they say \u201cyes,\u201d you can say,<em> \u201cWhile doing research, I learned that people doing this type of job, in the Northeast (or your location), with my type of background, are typically paid between x amount and y amount.\u201d<\/em> (Do your research and be prepared to give them a salary range.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-3923-4-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3923-4-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3923-4-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>For Scenario B, Remember that if they want you to disclose your current pay, it is illegal for companies in some states to ask this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Smile and repeat as politely as you can, respond with, <em>\u201cI\u2019m not comfortable discussing salary at this stage in the game. When the time comes, I\u2019m looking forward to hearing more about your offer. I don\u2019t disclose my pay, but am sure you\u2019ll make a competitive offer if you\u2019d like to move forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-3923-5\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3923-5-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3923-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"8\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-3923-5-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Don\u2019t let anyone bully you into answering a question that you don\u2019t want to answer, even if you start to feel awkward and uncomfortable about it. Consider this: those 10 seconds of awkwardness might otherwise cost you\u00a0<em>THOUSANDS\u00a0<\/em>of dollars in lost compensation each year and that can add up to BIG DOLLARS when you consider how that compounds over the course of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>If the employer baggers you, or rudely pressures you for that information, this may be your sign that you might not want to work for this company. If they are going to handle this situation unprofessionally and disrespectful, imagine how they treat their current staff and clients.
