Introduction to leisure/recreation studies. Includes historical development; current social trends, problems and issues; psychological and sociological aspects of leisure; the era of participation and the quest for fitness.
HPX 160 First Aid and Safety 2 SH
This course will show how to recognize when an emergency has occurred, prepare a person to make appropriate decisions regarding first aid care and to act on those decisions. Specific areas covered include: adult, child and infant breathing and CPR emergencies, first aid techniques, handling sudden illness, and providing care until professional medical help arrives.
HPX 163 Basic Disaster Services 2 SH
This course prepares students to comprehend the organization of disaster team services. It covers topics such as mass disaster care, emergency shelter management, family services, damage assessment and disaster action teams. It includes the necessary training for students to obtain national certification as America Red Cross disaster service volunteers. Official training materials are provided by the American Red Cross.

This course is an introduction to health issues and needs in various types of communities and to the concepts that underlie community health efforts of public, private, and voluntary organizations. Co-requisite: must be taken with HPX 285.

This course explores the basic nutritional needs of persons throughout the life cycle, the nutritive composition of foods, and the digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients in the body.
HPX 215 Health Issues in the Schools (Grades 1-12) 3 SH
This course is designed to meet the needs of individuals who are in education programs to learn about teaching health topics as mandated by Connecticut law (i.e., child sexual abuse, AIDS, drug education, suicide prevention, conflict resolution). Curricula and developmentally appropriate lesson plans which can assist educators in providing information, attitude clarification and living skills will be presented and discussed. The course will provide a strong information base and the opportunity to practice those skills needed to teach potentially controversial and sensitive health topics. Prerequisite: education major; sophomore standing.
HPX 230 Drug Studies 3 SH
The pharmacology, sociology and psychology of drug use and abuse will be examined in detail. Legal implications of the Drug Abuse Act will also be evaluated. Drug education in public schools will be addressed. Spring semester.

HPX 254 Fitness Seminar and Laboratory 3 SH
This seminar studies the implications of fitness in all leisure programs. Individualized exercise, activity programs and personalized prescriptions for fitness are explored. Injury prevention, safety emergency procedures, and environmental factors are covered. Establishment of fitness laboratories and utilization and supervision of equipment are considered. Laboratory experience.
HPX 257 Legal Safety Aspects of Coaching Adolescents 1 SH
This course investigates legal responsibilities of athletic coaching. School administrative policies are considered; the coaching environment is analyzed; safety of facilities and equipment is covered. Legislation for handicapped is interpreted.

This course is designed to apply basic anatomical and physiological principles to exercise and movement.
HPX 259 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 3 SH
This study is designed to provide the student with a working knowledge of the body's responses to physical activity. General physiological processes will be discussed with the emphasis placed on the important effects that occur due to exercise.

HPX 280 Principles of Health Education 2 SH
This course is a study of the foundations, theories and principles of health education and health promotion. The content is required for SABPAC (Society for Public Health Education Association for the Advancement of Health Education Baccalaureate Program Approval Committee). HPX 285 Service Learning in Community Health I 1 SH
Service learning is a powerful process which combines meaningful service to the community with a structured opportunity to learn from the service experience. This course combines the traditional educational goals of intellectual and personal growth with the social values of community service. Students are required to spend 30 hours during the semester at an organization. Students are responsible for finding their own organization/site and for their own transportation. Classroom meetings are included. Prerequisite: must be taken with HPX 201. Fall semester.
HPX 290 Body Therapies and Meditation 1 SH
This introductory course explores various forms of bodywork and focused mindfulness. The class will cover the following topics: massage iridology, reflexology, acupressure, body movement (Tai Chi), meditation, visualization and guided imagery. An experiential component is included.
HPX 291 Energy Therapies 1 SH
This course will be an introduction to various forms of bio-energy field work. The following topics will be covered: spirituality as contrasted to religion; acupressure and acupuncture; polarity therapy; breathwork; chakras; auras; channeling; chi as expressed in body movements; and "healing" vs. medical curing. An experiential component is included.

This course is an overview of methods used by many cultures to ensure balance in one's life in order to promote health and healing. The following topics will be included: Native American (e.g. Navajo) health and healing, ayurvedic practices, traditional Chinese health and healing, and a brief look at the use of plants for healing.

Eight components of a comprehensive school health program (i.e. health instruction, health services and school environment,etc.) will be covered. This field experience provides the opportunity to observe and participate in instruction in a public elementary school. Prerequisite: HPX 310 and acceptance as sophomore health major. HPX 312 Physical Education Program in Modern Schools 3 SH
This course examines the principles basic to a good physical education program for the modern elementary school. Facts from child growth and development research, showing the need for such a program are studied. This course is a discussion of emotional, social, spiritual and physical development as it relates to human sexual behavior. Emphasis is placed on self-understanding and awareness of one's own sexual nature and needs. HPX 400 Outdoor Education 3 SH
The history, philosophy and significance of outdoor education in American culture. Current practices in the various types of camps are studied and discussed. Personal assessment of individual skills necessary for outdoor education leadership is followed by practice of the skills needed. A project which includes planning, carrying out and evaluating a worthwhile outdoor experience is required of each student.
HPX 401 Leisure Counseling 3 SH
This course explores the development, theories and processes of leisure counseling. Students will learn assessment, program preparation and evaluation of leisure programs catering to individual needs. Leisure counseling will be interrelated with the physical and psychological needs of the individual. Students will be applying skills learned for self analysis and self direction in this field.

Prerequisite: HPX 100, 215, 230, 280, 310, 311 and ED 400 and EPY 405. Co-requisite: must be taken concurrent with HPX 464. Fall semester.
HPX 464 Student Teaching 12 SH
Each student will spend a full semester (70 contact days) observing and teaching health and health-related classes in the public schools under the supervision of a state-trained cooperating teacher as well as a university health science faculty member. Participation in student teaching seminar (HPX 460) and ED 340 is required. Students are urged not to be employed during the student teaching semester. Prerequisite: permission of the program coordinator. May not have more than 13 semester hours of required general education courses or 8 semester hours of approved, academic major courses remaining. Co-requisite: must be taken concurrent with HPX 460. Fall semester.
HPX 486 Program Planning and Evaluation 1 SH
This course covers the major components of health education /health service planning and evaluation, including: assets and needs assessment; goals and objectives; and selection, evaluation, design and implementation of strategies. HPX 490 Practicum for Community Health Educators 12 SH
This practicum is designed to provide the student with first-hand experience in a health organization. Students work with a preceptor at an organization to determine specific responsibilities for the field experience. Students make arrangements for their own placement and transportation. Prerequisite: HPX 100, 201, 280, 285, 310, 342 and 385.
