{"id":715,"date":"2020-03-18T13:11:54","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T13:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.www.wcsu.edu\/celt\/?p=715"},"modified":"2020-03-18T13:11:54","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T13:11:54","slug":"consider-avoiding-webex-or-zoom-to-teach-in-real-time-there-are-other-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/celt\/2020\/03\/18\/consider-avoiding-webex-or-zoom-to-teach-in-real-time-there-are-other-options\/","title":{"rendered":"Consider Avoiding WebEx (or Zoom) to teach in real time \u2013 there are other options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Synchronous or Asynchronous classes?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are thinking about holding your classes using\u00a0real time\u00a0(synchronous)\u00a0online meeting tools,\u00a0please reconsider this approach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Go Asynchronous Instead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asynchronous means that the content and activities will be available for students to access on their own schedule\u00a0<strong>within time parameters \/ due dates that you set<\/strong>.\u00a0 Instead of relying on real-time online meeting technology,\u00a0design asynchronous weekly class activities and assignments<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Real time online meeting tools (WebEx, Zoom, etc.) classes will NOT be like your face-to-face classes (particularly large classes)\n<ul>\n<li>Yes, it is real time, BUT there will be issues that will prevent quality interaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Reduces the potential for real time technology issues<\/li>\n<li>Provides more flexibility (and time for sorting out issues) for you and your students while everyone gets used to online teaching and learning<\/li>\n<li>You and your students may have new schedules, commitments, or illnesses to contend with<\/li>\n<li>Your students may not be able to connect to an online meeting for technical \/ hardware \/ bandwidth reasons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Asynchronous Learning Ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Record a lecture (using Kaltura in Blackboard)<\/li>\n<li>Add audio to your PowerPoint slides<\/li>\n<li>Use a Blackboard Discussion for asynchronous threaded discussion<\/li>\n<li>Have students post a reflection or response paper as an Assignment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn how to use these tools, as well as best practices for online teaching and learning by enrolling in the Faculty: Remote Teaching Organization on Blackboard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To access this organization<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 \u00a0Log\u00a0into Blackboard\u00a0\u2013\u00a0you may type in WCSU.EDU in the address bar in either Google Chrome or Edge<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Once on the home page \u2013 Click on\u00a0Essentials\u00a0on the bar along the top and select Blackboard (direct link:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwcsu.blackboard.com%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cbrewera%40wcsu.edu%7Cb7660d6f05de4b504ee308d7cb605d05%7Ce1622dbc94ba48ad87bba7f28074ee3d%7C0%7C0%7C637201487086866476&amp;sdata=B7udf8sIhaVNGiNWqDNiEDbZ7jMJi9TmoieYCtIJKNs%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/wcsu.blackboard.com\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Once on the Blackboard sign in page \u2013 enter your username (usually\u00a0lastname\u00a0first initial) and password.\u00a0 Click on\u00a0Login.\u00a0 You may get a message regarding \u2018cookies\u2019.\u00a0 Click ok or accept.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are now in Blackboard<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to self-enroll to in the Faculty: Remote Teaching Organization\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Once you\u2019ve logged into Blackboard, along the top part of your Blackboard page you will see \u2018WCSU\u2019 and \u2018WCSU Organizations\u2019.\u00a0 Click on the\u00a0\u2018WCSU Organizations\u2019 tab.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If this is the first time you are accessing this Organization, in the Organization Search box type\u00a0<strong>Faculty: Remote\u00a0Teaching<\/strong>\u00a0(or the partial organization name, like\u00a0remote) and click on \u2018GO\u2019<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Click on the down arrow (chevron) after the title Faculty: Remote Teaching and\u00a0select \u2018Enroll\u2019<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Enter \u00a0Remote2020\u00a0as the access code and select \u2018Submit\u2019 (<strong>Note<\/strong>: the password is case sensitive)<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on \u2018OK\u2019<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0<strong>Faculty: Remote Teaching\u00a0<\/strong>Organization should now appear in your Organization list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Synchronous or Asynchronous classes?\u00a0 If you are thinking about holding your classes using\u00a0real time\u00a0(synchronous)\u00a0online meeting tools,\u00a0please reconsider this approach.
