Centennial Update September/October 2002
Special Thanks from President James R. Roach
Sept. 14 was a memorable day for the WestConn community.
Our Centennial Kick-Off Celebration was a great success for the university and the Greater Danbury community. I am
grateful for the hard work of all members of the university community who participated in showcasing the university on
that day. My thanks to the students who guided numerous people through our campus buildings, and to the university
faculty and staff who volunteered for various events and activities. To Richard Sullivan, vice president for finance and
administration, I offer my sincere appreciation for his support and assistance that made this university-wide initiative
Each one of you has contributed to the university in so many ways through the years, and your continued contributions
were recognized and greatly appreciated by all those on campus during the day and evening on Sept. 14.
It’s a girl!
|Welcome into the world, Alexandra Chakar, the first baby
born at Danbury Hospital on Sept. 14. The university awarded the five-pound, five-ounce girl the four-year
scholarship to attend WestConn, in conjunction with the Centennial Kick-Off Celebration.
Could Alexandra’s Sept. 14 arrival be destiny? Her father, Charles, is a 1994 alumnus; mother, Mirta, attended
several classes at WestConn; and Alexandra’s grandfather and uncle both received master’s degrees from
How did Mirta feel when she found out about the scholarship?
“It took my pain away,” she said, smiling widely.
Remembering the past, planning for the Centennial
|Three years ago, we began preliminary discussions about
how WestConn would commemorate its Centennial. Those early discussions were marked by three main things: the
nostalgia and pride we all felt looking back, the apparent love we all have for this university, and the
question of how what we did could be part of a planning process for the future. The more those things were
reflected in our discussions, the more convinced we became that our efforts had to contain the above elements.
And, of course, funding. More Info
