"From the time that I was little, I never imagined that I would grow up and be anything other than a nurse," Megan Brunell says. "Nursing to me is one of the only professions in which caring is the central concept. Nurses are in a position to truly impact the lives of patients, their families and the community, and provide compassionate care to focus on promoting a better quality of life. There is no greater reward than knowing that you touched the life of another human being while working in a position that you look forward to each day."

"I decided to come to WestConn because of the softball coach at the time, Alicia O'Brien," Brunell says. "As soon as I met her and listened to her values and beliefs regarding school and softball, I knew that WCSU was the place for me." It didn't hurt that WestConn has a first-rate nursing program, too.

Brunell has a great deal of praise for her professors -- and her coaches -- at WestConn. “Although I have been fortunate to have many people who have significantly impacted my life while at WCSU, Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Daryle Brown has given me the support and guidance throughout the past four years to allow me to become not only a better student, but also a better person. Her whole-hearted nature and true concern for her students has made her a role model to not only myself, but several of the students in the nursing program. The entire faculty from the nursing department has been extremely supportive and flexible with organizing clinical hours around a softball schedule. Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Karen Daley's support both academically and athletically has influenced me, and her professionalism and love for the nursing profession is something that I have grown to admire. Both Alicia O'Brien and Heather Stone, who have been the head softball coaches while I've been here, have taught me life lessons both on and off the field.”

Asked what she will remember most about her WestConn experience, Brunell says, “My most memorable experiences at WestConn have definitely been playing softball with an amazing group of girls. Each and every one of them has significantly impacted my life and they are not only my teammates but also girls who I have developed lifelong friendships with through laughter and tears, accomplishments and let-downs on the field, and unforgettable memories.”
After graduation, Brunell’s plan is to obtain a registered nurse position in an emergency department in a hospital in the Boston/Providence area. "Within a few years, I plan on returning back to school to obtain my Advanced Practice Nursing Master's Degree.”
Brunell’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: “If I could give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen, especially nursing majors, it would be to believe in yourself. I remember being a freshman and never believing that I would make it through the tough program, but I did, and with a lot of hard work and dedication, they can too!”
