Nontraditional student Michael Lombardi received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College in 1974 and an M.B.A. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business in 1976. He worked more than 25 years in the corporate world as a finance executive, most recently as the chief financial officer for a global media production and distribution company, before deciding to pursue a dream that dates back to his childhood. "I have had a life-long passion for the weather since I was a small child," he says. "It has been my dream to study weather."

When considering where to go to fulfill his dream, Lombardi began researching meteorology programs within a reasonable distance from his home. That's how he found WestConn. "Iit is 30 minutes from my home," Lombardi says. "It offered what I needed. The program gives you a full range of exposure. This is the only full-fledged, operational meteorology program in the New York metropolitan area. It seemed like the kind of place I could learn about weather forecasting and analysis."

Asked what he will remember most about his WestConn experience, Lombardi says, "In general, developing friendships with the other students, who have been so welcoming.” Lombardi also credits Assistant Professor of Physics, Astronomy and Meteorology Rob Eisenson with having been a mentor. And while he's too modest to mention it, no doubt being featured in a segment taped on campus by The Weather Channel about this 56-year-old student will prove to be a memory, too.

After graduation, Lombardi says he will definitely work. "Ideally, I hope to combine my new training in the meteorolgy sciences with my business and management background. I am interested in broadcast meteorolgy as well as educational outreach."
Lombardi’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: “Immerse yourself in the total college experience. This is a unique period in your life. Don't waste it. Study hard, follow your passions, stretch yourself academically. Join clubs and participate in other activities on campus. Make friends and have fun too.”
