Ansonia native John Ready started his college journey at Southern Connecticut State University where he intended to pursue a degree in athletic training. He invested two years at Southern: from fall ‘04 to fall ’06, and then transferred to WestConn.

Ready made the switch, he says, because "I was able to commute and afford paying for college by myself." In addition to changing schools, he also refocused his studies. "I changed majors when I transferred to combine a past strength in English with a future need for media relations professionals."

Ready says he found two mentors in his new field of study while at WestConn. "Associate Dean of the Macricostas School of Arts and Sciences Dr. Abbey Zink and Adjunct Instructor Mark Misercola have both played a major part in my success here," Ready says. "In fact, each of them wrote a letter of recommendation to my grad school of choice. I was able to turn to both of them to enhance my knowledge of the field that I am passionate about. They both went far above and beyond what it takes to be a professor at the collegiate level."

Asked what he will remember most about his WestConn experience, Ready says, "The time spent in Lionel Bascom's classes was the most memorable. He was able to provide countless real-world experiences and share many stories about life as an investigative reporter. Learning Adobe InDesign in his class was an unbelievably instrumental skill to acquire.”

Ready, who finished his course work at WestConn last semester, is now attending New York University to pursue a Master of Science in Public Relations and Corporate Communications.

Ready’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: “To the students who want to become professional writers or break into the PR industry: Get published frequently and wherever you can. Write for Black & White, submit letters to The News-Times and dedicate time to your class assignments to save as writing samples because employers look for people with a portfolio. You should be able to walk out of WestConn and say with confidence to a prospective employer, 'This is what I did, and this is what I can do for you.'"
