SUMMARY:Jewish American Identity Through Food\, Activism and Archives
DESCRIPTION:JEWISH AMERICAN IDENTITY THROUGH FOOD\, ACTIVISM AND ARCHIVES: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting the following event for Jewish American Heritage Month. \nJoin curators\, librarians\, and educators at The New York Public Library for a virtual event exploring the richness and complexity of Jewish American life through food traditions\, community activism\, and archival treasures. Drawing on materials from the Library’s special collections and educator resources\, this program highlights objects and stories that reflect the diversity of Jewish identity in the United States. \nParticipants will learn about NYPL’s Jewish Cookbooks LibGuide\, a resource guide that takes readers on a culinary journey through migration\, adaptation\, and memory. Recipes and cookbooks serve as windows into the lived experiences of Jewish immigrants\, showing how food preserves culture and evolves across generations. \nThe event also explores Jewish American histories of labor organizing and tenant activism through New York City’s Rent Strikers: Jewish Activism & Housing Reform in the Progressive Era\, a curriculum guide developed by NYPL’s Center for Educators and Schools. This guide features primary sources\, historical context\, and classroom-ready materials that illuminate the connections between Jewish communities and broader movements for housing justice and workers’ rights. \nWe will also spotlight items from NYPL’s Dorot Jewish Division digital exhibitions\, including Visualizing Jewish New York and Building Jewish Life in the United States. Through postcards\, photographs\, and other artifacts\, we’ll explore how Jewish life has been documented and expressed across time and place. \nThis virtual event is at 4 p.m. Register at www.nypl.org/events/programs/2025/05/08/jewish-american-identity-through-food-activism-archives

SUMMARY:Womanimation! Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:WOMANIMATION! 2023 FILM FESTIVAL: Womanimation! visits Greenwood Features on Saturday\, July 8\, presented by MergingArts Productions\, allowing animation aficionados the chance to sample some of the world’s best animated short film stories\, culled from hundreds of submissions from women around the globe. It features a select program of 12 short films from nine countries\, all of which are U.S. or international premieres. \nIn roughly the length of a typical 90-minute feature film\, the festival entertains and challenges the audience\, with visual styles from stop motion to computer animation to traditional hand drawn. The focus is on independent animators and studios\, and the material is not for younger children\, with the subjects being more challenging than what you see in mainstream animation. Festival organizers will be on hand throughout the day\, with each screening kicking off with a slideshow with music introducing the filmmakers. \nAudiences at each screening will vote for their favorite three films of the program\, with the top overall vote-getter receiving a custom art object award\, created by a winner from a previous edition of the festival. In a new twist for this year’s event\, a special jury has been assembled consisting of women musicians who have topped the charts over the past year on MergingArts global radio programs (https://tinyurl.com/MACharts). The jury will review and rate the films\, with the winner also receiving a custom art award from a previous winner. \nYou can buy tickets at the door or ahead of time for festival screenings at 1\, 4 and 8 p.m.  At 6 p.m.\, we’ll have a reception DJ Madame B spinning music created by women across the globe\, along with special female-fronted karaoke selections for the bold among us. \nIn collaboration with Pink Boots Society (https://www.pinkbootssociety.org)\, who will be on hand for the reception as well\, we will premiere the special Citrus Got Real Wheat Ale from Reverie Brewing Company. \nMore information is available at http://www.mergingarts.org and https://www.mergingartsproductions.com/Events/Womanimation/Main.aspx.

SUMMARY:Yale Whiffenpoofs*
DESCRIPTION:*AFFILIATED EVENT: YALE WHIFFENPOOFS: At The Palace Theater Danbury on Main Street\, Danbury at 2 p.m. \nEvery year\, a group of rising Yale seniors are selected to be in the WHIFFENPOOFS  the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group. Founded in 1909\, the “Whiffs” began as a senior quartet that met for weekly concerts at Mory’s Temple Bar\, the famous Yale tavern. Today\, the group has become one of Yale’s most celebrated traditions. \nTheir performance seems effortless\, but it is not easy to become a Whiff. Only 14 highly coveted spots are available for Yale juniors to join the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella ensemble. \nFor these young singers\, the prize is definitely worth the fierce competition. Being a Whiff means being part of a tradition that includes the most famous Whiff of them all\, Cole Porter. Porter sang in the 1913 lineup\, and the Whiffenpoofs always include Cole Porter tunes in their program as a tribute. \nThe Whiffs are no strangers to fame\, having performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center and the White House. They’re at ease on television\, too\, having been part of hits such as “Gilmore Girls\,” “Glee” and “Jeopardy\,” among others. They’ve sung at the Rose Bowl and on “Saturday Night Live.” And they’re coming back to The Palace Danbury this December!

By 1974\, he was firmly established as one of America’s best-selling performers and was among the most beloved entertainers of his era. He had four No. 1 hits and a slew of Top 10s that resulted in 14 gold and eight platinum albums. His “Greatest Hits” album sold more than 10 million copies. Tragically he died in  1997 when the experimental plane he was piloting crashed in California. \n25 years later\, Ted Vigil is honored to pay homage to the man and his music. Vigil has been performing his John Denver tribute for nearly ten years\, performing many of Denver’s best loved songs including “Rocky Mountain High\,” “Annie’s Song\,” “Sunshine on My Shoulder\,” Take Me Home Country Roads\,” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.”  He insists he is not an impersonator\, but rather is singing tribute to this great man and the legacy of his beloved music. \nTickets ar $39
