Bus departs at 7 a.m. Rest break on the way. \nArrive at the Guest Center in Saratoga for a rest break and meeting our step-on guide. DESCRIPTION:WCSU RESEARCH DAY: This showcase of undergraduate and graduate research\, scholarship\, and creative inquiry projects will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall. If you are just interested in research\, or not yet sure what you want to do in your future career\, it is a great opportunity to learn about the interesting work being done in a variety of fields by students like you right here at WCSU. It’s also a good way to meet other students who share your passions and interests. Projects are submitted from students from a whole range of fields including biology\, psychology\, education\, chemistry\, English\, and history. There are also two keynote speakers who are both graduates from WCSU. \nKeynote Speakers: Gill Simmons is a meteorologist who will be talking about humanizing the science of weather\, and Dr. Brittany Baisch is a toxicologist who will be talking about methods for making safer decisions in her field. \nIf you can’t make it for the whole time\, that’s ok. You can always stop in for the student poster sessions or the keynote speakers.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR JERMAR ROUNTREE: Please join WCSU Interim President Dr. Paul Beran as WCSU alumnus Jermar Rountree will be on campus to speak with us from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in White Hall\, Room 127\, Midtown campus. \nJermar Rountree graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in History and began working at the Grassy Plain YMCA in nearby Bethel — first as a teacher\, then as the Physical Education Director\, and ultimately as the Assistant Director of the entire program. He also began a 10-year journey to obtain a master’s degree in Early Education. In 2012\, Rountree took a job at D.C. Prep Public Charter School in Northeast Washington alongside McDermott\, before joining Center City Public Charter School in 2016. Last year\, Washington\, D.C. DESCRIPTION:VETERAN’S DAY BOOK LAUNCH: WCSU’s MFA in Creative and Professional Writing is co-sponsoring a Veteran’s Day celebration at Byrd’s Books in Bethel from 7 to 8 p.m. The event will feature Ron Farina\, an MFA graduate\, who recently published his third book\, OUT OF THE SHADOWS. \nAbout the book: \nThe stories of nine remarkable American women soldiers wounded while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Based on hours of personal interviews\, Out of the Shadows: Voices of American Women Soldiers pieces together the unique lives of these women who served side by side with their male counterparts in war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan. \nAbout the author: \nRon Farina is author of three books\, including most recently “Out of the Shadows Voices of American Women Soldiers\,” “Who Will Have My Back” and “At the Altar of the Past.” Other works include: “Unsung Heroes\,” “Keeping Promises” and “Worn Torn\,” personal essays about the human cost of war. In 2021 he was awarded the AWP Intro Award for Fiction and the Society of Professional Journalists\, Connecticut Chapter first place award for General Column Magazine writing. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two Golden Retrievers\, Henry and Preacher. \nHe holds an MFA from Western Connecticut State University. He served in Vietnam in 1966-67.

All submissions must have the endorsement of a faculty mentor. \nThe WRD committee will evaluate submissions based on the criteria for abstract content and will assess overall merit within the context of the specific academic discipline. Pedestrians are free. \nAlumni Hospitality Tent from noon to 5 p.m. featuring a fried dough food truck (free with tickets)\, the 3rd Annual Homecoming Corn Hole Tournament with cash prizes\, and giveaways and raffle prizes. \nAlumni Pavilion/Reunion City from noon to 5 p.m. featuring the 6th Western Idol Competition\, photo booth\, roaming magician/balloon twister\, face painting\, children’s craft table\, caricaturist\, games/prizes\, bouncy house/slide\, cotton candy\, entertainment by Paul Yarema ’68\, DJ Sounds Unlimited\, WCSU Dance Club and WCSU A Capella Group. Food offered by Sodexo including comfort food\, soup\, grilled cheese station\, popcorn/pretzel machine\, hot dog cart\, wine/beer/soda/water\, coffee/hot chocolate and snacks. \nReunions: Class of 1971 50th Reunion\, Class of 1970 50th+1 Reunion\, WCSU Nursing Program 50th+1 Reunion\, WCSU Swimming/Diving 25th+1 Reunion \nMost events are free; some do have a cost.
