When extreme events occur in nature\, they affect us\, along with moose\, flying squirrels\, and all the rest. Enough information is available for us to begin to understand these things. Acceptance\, understanding\, concern\, and finally action are the steps towards addressing the problems we have. I believe that we must clean up our own messes\, just as our parents told us to do. I believe that our grandchildren have the right to a livable future.” Location: Haas Library\, 1st floor\, Midtown campus. \nNoon to 2 p.m. – Permaculture Garden Tours. For over three years he followed scientists from a wide range of disciplines at work in the Arctic\, Antarctic\, Southern Ocean\, New Zealand\, Europe and the United States. They talk about their work\, their hopes and fears with a rare candor and directness\, resulting in an intimate portrait of the global community of researchers racing to understand our planet’s changing climate and provide a compelling case for rising CO2 as the main cause.” Visit thiniceclimate.org to learn more about the film and the efforts to fund its creation. Location: Berkshire Dining Hall\, Midtown campus. Registration is required at https://wcsutickets.regfox.com/celebrate-earth-day-with-the-wcsu-libraries. \n5 to 7 p.m. – Climate Discussion – “Tesla won’t fix climate change” with Associate Professor of Social Sciences Dr. Manoj Misra. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk - Landscape in Art: From Delight to Alert by Marcy Freedman
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY TALK – LANDSCAPE IN ART: FROM DELIGHT TO ALERT BY MARCY FREEDMAN: As part of the exhibition\, Address: Earth in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, artist and art historian Marcy B Freedman will present a gallery talk\, “Landscape in Art: From Delight to Alert\,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event will take place in Choir Room 108 at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, WCSU’s Westside Campus. \nFreedman will examine the role of the natural world in works of art dating from the Renaissance to the present. She will discuss the ways in which the landscape was subordinate to the holy figures in religious paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy\, where the Catholic Church was a dominant force in the world of art. Moving on to the 17th-century\, Freedman will highlight those artists in the Protestant areas of northern Europe who were pioneers in the development of a tradition of landscape painting that impacted the art of the 19th-century Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. She will then discuss the Cubist and Expressionist artists of the early 20th-century\, who found radical new ways of engaging with the natural world as they explored alternatives to naturalistic representation. Finally\, Freedman will consider those Earth artists whose monumental outdoor projects brought attention to the environmental movement of the late 20th century. She will conclude with an homage to a number of contemporary artists – such as Olafur Eliasson and Maya Lin – who are using their art to alert us to the devastating effects of climate change upon our earth. \nThe Address: Earth Exhibition will be on view through December 4\, 2022. The gallery will be open before and after the gallery talk and during regular gallery hours: Tues-Fri\, noon to 4 p.m.\, and Sat-Sun\, 1 to 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:"Pond Reflections"
DESCRIPTION:FILM SCREENING & ARTIST TALK WITH ADDRESS: EARTH ARTIST\, ROSALIND SCHNEIDER: As part of the exhibition\, Address: Earth in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, artist\, and filmmaker Rosalind Schneider will present a screening of her film\, “Pond Reflections\,” and discuss her work from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event will take place in Choir Room 108 at the Visual & Performing Arts Center. \n“Pond Reflections” is footage collected over three years of seasonal reflections on water as the primal source of creation. Surrounding trees\, rocks\, and landscape trace the cycle of life. Peter Rubin\, a recent graduate of the Berklee School of Music composed the film score and may also participate in the discussion. \nRosalind Schneider creates works that transcend their source to form a new reference to a visionary landscape. She creates layered landscape images with multiple realities that progress from the real into abstraction and a fusion of the two. Her Digital Fusion paintings result from the capture of a video frame as a starting point and are realized through hands-on manipulation. The surfaces are transformed by drawing\, acrylic\, and glass particle collage resulting in a luminous translation that speaks to its moving image origin. Multiple realities are birthed from video. Schneider was the first artist to show the film as an art at the Hirshhorn Museum\, following a solo show of her films at the Whitney Museum. Exhibitions of film\, video\, digital prints\, and paintings include the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Islip Museum\, Chelsea Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, SculptureCenter\, and MOMA (Carte Blanche: Women Writing the Language of Cinema). Her 16mm films are currently being restored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will be part of the film archive at the Academy Museum. \nMore of Schneider’s work is on view in the exhibition\, Address: Earth\, from October 13 through December 4\, 2022. The gallery will be open before and after the film screening and during regular gallery hours: Tues-Fri\, noon to 4 p.m.\, and Sat-Sun\, 1 to 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Marine Organisms
DESCRIPTION:RESILIENCE OF MARINE ORGANISMS TO CLIMATE CHANGE: DR. EMMA CROSS: Please join us for a live online seminar at 4 p.m. sponsored by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. \nYou can register for the event at this link to receive the information to join the seminar: \nhttps://wcsu.webex.com/webappng/sites/wcsu/meeting/info/480684a56b3b412ab6f98c127a64af0f?isPopupRegisterView=true \nAbstract: Since the Industrial Revolution\, anthropogenically-increased CO2 has altered oceanic surface seawaters through warming and acidification. Coastal environments also experience nutrient pollution\, which increases primary production and microbial respiration often exacerbating acidification and causing loss of oxygen. Previous ocean acidification research has mainly focused on short-term laboratory manipulations of conditions. Incorporating different approaches investigating both the impacts of past and future environmental change provides a more complete understanding of organisms’ responses. My research involves field analyses\, long-term laboratory experiments and museum collections to more accurately determine how seaweed\, marine invertebrates and vertebrates have and will respond to climate change. In this seminar\, I will discuss how some shell-bearing organisms have compensatory mechanisms to counteract effects of ocean acidification\, how coastal marine fish are tolerant of future predicted acidification and hypoxia as well as how the shellfish aquaculture industry can incorporate seaweed to their operations as a climate change mitigation strategy. \nBio: Dr. Emma Cross is an assistant professor of Coastal and Marine Science in the Department of the Environment\, Geography and Marine Sciences since August 2019. Before SCSU\, Cross completed her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge and the British Antarctic Survey and then moved across the pond for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the University of Connecticut. Cross teaches a range of hands-on marine science and environmental studies classes covering topical issues such as climate change\, plastic pollution\, overfishing and habitat destruction. Her research focuses on the effects of ocean acidification\, warming and hypoxia on seaweed\, marine invertebrates\, and vertebrates. Cross’ current projects include climate change mitigation strategies for the aquaculture industry and the environmental impacts of aquaculture on water quality and biodiversity. Cross uses field analyses\, long-term laboratory experiments and museum collections as well as collaborations with the aquaculture industry and nonprofit organizations in New England to address topical marine science issues.
