Join us for our final Film and Forum for the Spring 2025 semester from 3 to 5 p.m. for a screening of “Climate Refugees\,” a highly awarded documentary that focuses on the intersection between “overpopulation\, excessive consumption\, dwindling resources\, and a shifting climate.” \nA discussion following the screening will be led by Dr. Anna Malavisi\, Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Department of Philosophy. \nPopcorn and snacks provided by Wally’s Cupboard\, WCSU’s Food Pantry. Her dissertation was titled\, “Global development and its discontents: rethinking the theory and practice is a critical analysis of global development from an ethical and feminist epistemology perspective.” Her philosophical interests include: practical and global ethics\, feminist philosophy/epistemology\, social and political thought\, environmental philosophy and the philosophy of violence. She is also the founder of Boots on the Ground — an environmental justice advocate training school — and the Community Benefits Alliance\, which helps communities understand and negotiate equitable development agreements. Her work spans climate policy\, energy justice\, and insurance reform\, with a focus on empowering frontline communities to fight for what they deserve. Sharon has testified before Congress on the critical connection between climate change and the insurance industry\, highlighting how discriminatory practices undermine housing\, resilience\, and recovery in vulnerable neighborhoods. She also leads campaigns to ensure equitable access to clean energy and community-led sustainability solutions. She believes sustainability is not just a goal — it’s a right. Through education\, advocacy\, and organizing\, she is unlocking what’s possible when justice is at the center. Sharon is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College holding a B.A. in Urban Studies and an M.A. in Urban Planning. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:MARTIN ESPADA\, “JAILBREAK OF SPARROWS” DEBUT READING: National Book Award-winning poet Martín Espada will give the debut reading from his new book of poems\, “Jailbreak of Sparrows” at 7 p.m. in Room 218 of the Classroom Building on the Westside campus. A book signing will follow. \nAs a poet\, essayist\, translator\, editor\, and attorney\, Martín Espada has dedicated much of his career to the pursuit of social justice\, including fighting for human rights and reclaiming the historical record. His critically acclaimed collections of poetry celebrate — and lament — the working class experience\, and\, whether narrating the struggles of immigrants as they adjust to life in the United States or chronicling the battles that Latin Americans have waged against their own repressive governments\, Espada has given voice to otherness\, powerlessness\, and poverty in poetry that is Whitmanesque in scope and has been recognized with the National Book Award\, the $100\,000 Ruth Lilly Award\, and the American Book Award\, among many others. He is a Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts. \nFree and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:RUBY DEE AND OSSIE DAVIS IN “DO THE RIGHT THING” AND THEIR IMPACT ON U.S. FILM\, THEATRE\, AND CIVIL RIGHTS: Dr. Khalid Long of Howard University and Dr. Donald Gagnon of the WestConn Department of Theatre Arts will discuss two giants of American culture\, their impact on U. S. film and theatre\, and their engagement in the Civil Rights movement. This event will be at 3:30 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus. It is free and open to the public. \nDr. Khalid Y. Long is the Interim Associate Dean of Research and Creative Endeavors\, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at Howard University. A scholar\, dramaturg\, and director\, Long specializes in African American/Black diasporic theatre\, performance\, and literature through the lenses of Black feminist/womanist thought\, queer studies\, and performance studies. Long is co-editor of Contemporary Black Theatre and Performance: Acts of Rebellion\, Activism\, and Solidarity (Methuen Drama) and is co-editor of the forthcoming anthology\, August Wilson in Context for Cambridge University Press’s “Literature in Context” series. Long serves as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the August Wilson Society and serves on the board for the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). Long recently served as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the Black Theatre Association (ATHE) and was the Vice President for Advocacy of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. \nDr. Donald Gagnon holds a dual appointment as Professor of Theatre Arts and Professor of English at WestConn. His research\, publications\, and presentations range from African American drama to LGBTQ+ drama to musical theatre and more. The inaugural recipient of the WestConn Provost’s Award for Teaching\, he is currently compiling an academic anthology on the politics of Oscar Hammerstein II\, and he serves as a respondent for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
