DESCRIPTION:MARTIN ESPADA\, “JAILBREAK OF SPARROWS” DEBUT READING: National Book Award-winning poet Martín Espada will give the debut reading from his new book of poems\, “Jailbreak of Sparrows” at 7 p.m. in Room 218 of the Classroom Building on the Westside campus. A book signing will follow. \nAs a poet\, essayist\, translator\, editor\, and attorney\, Martín Espada has dedicated much of his career to the pursuit of social justice\, including fighting for human rights and reclaiming the historical record. His critically acclaimed collections of poetry celebrate — and lament — the working class experience\, and\, whether narrating the struggles of immigrants as they adjust to life in the United States or chronicling the battles that Latin Americans have waged against their own repressive governments\, Espada has given voice to otherness\, powerlessness\, and poverty in poetry that is Whitmanesque in scope and has been recognized with the National Book Award\, the $100\,000 Ruth Lilly Award\, and the American Book Award\, among many others. He is a Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts. \nFree and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:RUBY DEE AND OSSIE DAVIS IN “DO THE RIGHT THING” AND THEIR IMPACT ON U.S. FILM\, THEATRE\, AND CIVIL RIGHTS: Dr. Khalid Long of Howard University and Dr. Donald Gagnon of the WestConn Department of Theatre Arts will discuss two giants of American culture\, their impact on U. S. film and theatre\, and their engagement in the Civil Rights movement. This event will be at 3:30 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus. It is free and open to the public. \nDr. Khalid Y. Long is the Interim Associate Dean of Research and Creative Endeavors\, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at Howard University. A scholar\, dramaturg\, and director\, Long specializes in African American/Black diasporic theatre\, performance\, and literature through the lenses of Black feminist/womanist thought\, queer studies\, and performance studies. Long is co-editor of Contemporary Black Theatre and Performance: Acts of Rebellion\, Activism\, and Solidarity (Methuen Drama) and is co-editor of the forthcoming anthology\, August Wilson in Context for Cambridge University Press’s “Literature in Context” series. Long serves as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the August Wilson Society and serves on the board for the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). Long recently served as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the Black Theatre Association (ATHE) and was the Vice President for Advocacy of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. \nDr. Donald Gagnon holds a dual appointment as Professor of Theatre Arts and Professor of English at WestConn. His research\, publications\, and presentations range from African American drama to LGBTQ+ drama to musical theatre and more. The inaugural recipient of the WestConn Provost’s Award for Teaching\, he is currently compiling an academic anthology on the politics of Oscar Hammerstein II\, and he serves as a respondent for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

DESCRIPTION:HACU WEBINAR – CURRENT CHALLENGES FACING ACADEMIC LEADERS: Colleges and universities are facing daunting challenges\, including a growing sentiment that academic institutions are failing to provide sufficient value compared to the cost of tuition – commonly referred to as the value proposition. Academic leaders are also grappling with the impact that artificial intelligence will have on both course delivery and leadership\, perhaps making AI more daunting than the distance education revolution. \nAlthough case studies or anecdotes are valuable when facing these new challenges\, they are typically based on a small sample for analysis. This presentation will explore what the larger sample and meta-analytic empirical research on the outcome of different leadership styles reveals. DESCRIPTION:STUDENT LOAN REIMBURSEMENT WITH REP. COREY PARIS: Starting January 1\, Connecticut college students are now able to benefit from a bill passed in Hartford to alleviate student loan debt. The reimbursement program\, led by House Democrats and the first of its kind in the nation\, provides up to $5\,000/year for up to four years (up to $20\,000) in loan forgiveness. Six million dollars has been allocated in the current budget cycle and will be awarded on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nA champion of this program\, State Rep. Corey P. Paris (D-Stamford) will return to his alma mater to explain the details to faculty\, staff\, alumni\, students\, parents and the public. SUMMARY:2024 Virtual CT Lake Symposia
DESCRIPTION:2024 VIRTUAL CONNECTICUT LAKE SYMPOSIA: In continuation of the series that began in 2019\, the Western Connecticut State University Department of Biology\, in collaboration with the Connecticut Federation of Lakes and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection\, will host three virtual 2024 Regional Lake Communities Symposia: “The March of Hydrilla in Connecticut & Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Sept. 23; “Aquatic Invasive Species Grants in Connecticut” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Oct. 21; and “Managing Aquatics Invasive Plants” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Nov. 18. To register\, visit www.wcsu.edu/biology/lake-symposium-2024/. \nThe Sept. 23 discussion about “The March of Hydrilla in Connecticut” and “Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla” will feature WCSU Limnology Instructor Larry Marsicano\, Brawley Consulting Group LLC; Greg Bugbee\, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, Office of Aquatic Invasive Species\, who will address “The March of Hydrilla” and Dr. Benjamine P. Sperry\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, Engineer Research and Development Center\, who will speak about “Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla.” A question-and-answer session will follow. \nOn Oct. 21\, the topic will be “Aquatic Invasive Species Grants in Connecticut.” Marsicano will be joined by Matthew Goclowski\, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection\, Fisheries Division and AIS Grants Oversight Committee\, who will share “Five Years into Grants for the Control of Aquatic Invasive Species in Connecticut.” A discussion will follow by lake and river community stakeholders about their projects funded through the Connecticut Lakes\, Rivers\, Ponds Preservation account. \nFinally\, on Nov. 18\, “Managing Aquatics Invasive Plants” will be the focus of discussion. Marsicano will be joined by Jeff Arpin and Al Fichtel from the Amston Lake District\, who will discuss “Thwarting the Spread of Eurasian Watermilfoil at Amston Lake in Hebron\, Lebanon and Colchester\, Connecticut.” Also on the program will be Dr. Ken Wagner\, Water Resource Services\, who will speak about “Putting the RAPID in Rapid Response: Considerations for Effective Reaction to Aquatic Invasive Species.” Following an audience Q&A\, WestConn Professor of Biology Dr. Theodora Pinou will deliver closing remarks and next steps. \nThe symposia are free and the public is invited to join in via WebEx. DESCRIPTION:JANE GOODALL CENTER SUSTAINABILITY SYMPOSIUM: An annual event to explore issues related to the environmental sustainability of our campus\, community and world. There will be a student panel\, a presentation by the Sunrise Movement Connecticut\, and a roundtable discussion. We will listen to students about their initiatives for a more sustainable world\, but also discuss our commitment toward making WCSU and our community more sustainable. Lunch is provided. From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Room 219 of the Science Building on the Midtown campus.
