DESCRIPTION:BREATHING SPACE: EXPLORING COLLABORATION ACROSS ART FORMS: WCSU students and faculty will share their experiences collaborating on Breathing Space\, a broadside project featuring poems and artwork created by WCSU students. Audience members will learn about the creative opportunities of collaborating with fellow artists across forms and styles as well as participate in a short writing exercise inspired by visual art produced by the Arts Escape community. Original broadsides will be on display. Refreshments and light snacks will be served. Digital versions of last year’s broadsides can be viewed here. From 6 to 8 p.m. at Arts Escape\, 493 Heritage Road\, Suite 4C in Southbury. \nThe Department of Creative and Professional Writing is proud to expand their community partnerships to include Arts Escape. Founded in 2012\, Arts Escape encourages engagement in the arts through an extensive range of programs and classes. DESCRIPTION:VETERAN’S DAY BOOK LAUNCH: WCSU’s MFA in Creative and Professional Writing is co-sponsoring a Veteran’s Day celebration at Byrd’s Books in Bethel from 7 to 8 p.m. The event will feature Ron Farina\, an MFA graduate\, who recently published his third book\, OUT OF THE SHADOWS. \nAbout the book: \nThe stories of nine remarkable American women soldiers wounded while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Based on hours of personal interviews\, Out of the Shadows: Voices of American Women Soldiers pieces together the unique lives of these women who served side by side with their male counterparts in war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan. \nAbout the author: \nRon Farina is author of three books\, including most recently “Out of the Shadows Voices of American Women Soldiers\,” “Who Will Have My Back” and “At the Altar of the Past.” Other works include: “Unsung Heroes\,” “Keeping Promises” and “Worn Torn\,” personal essays about the human cost of war. In 2021 he was awarded the AWP Intro Award for Fiction and the Society of Professional Journalists\, Connecticut Chapter first place award for General Column Magazine writing. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two Golden Retrievers\, Henry and Preacher. \nHe holds an MFA from Western Connecticut State University. He served in Vietnam in 1966-67.

The kickball tournament\, hosted by the Recreation Department\, is for current WCSU students only. From 5 to 9 p.m. on the Westside REC Field. \nKickball Registration \nPrizes for the winning team! \nWestside CC Ballroom (Documentary and Guest Speaker) 7pm \nThe documentary showing will be open to everyone (the entire WCSU community including faculty/staff and to the public). \nTrigger warning: discussions of dating violence and intimate partner homicide. Counselors will be available for support. \nAlyssiah Wiley was a sophomore at Eastern Connecticut State University. Her goal was to be a psychiatrist because she loved helping people\, giving advice and giving back to her community. In early 2013\, Alyssiah was brutally murdered by her abusive boyfriend. Her mother\, Corrinna Martin\, says she “was thrust into the fight for awareness and activism.” She began M.O.V.E. Inc to educate and advocate to end domestic violence. DESCRIPTION:CAMPUS VISIT BY CSCU PRESIDENT TERRENCE CHENG: Terrence Cheng\, president of the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities System\, will visit our campus on Friday\, Nov. 19.  He has asked us to organize sessions for him to speak with faculty\, staff\, and students so that he can learn more about our university and its challenges and opportunities\, as well as individuals’ views of WCSU. \nOne session each will be held for faculty and staff in the Student Center Theater on the Midtown campus. The meetings are open to all and will be streamed live and for viewing afterward. \nThe Student Government Association has invited President Cheng to a meeting of the SGA Senate and also to a luncheon of select students. \nThe schedule for the faculty and staff meetings in the Student Center Theater are: \n\nStaff\, 10 to 11 a.m.\nFaculty\, 11 a.m. to noon\n\nLinks to the streamed version will be provided before Nov. 19. \nAfter the faculty session\, President Cheng will proceed to lunch and a meeting with student representatives and will also meet virtually with the WCSU Foundation Board of Directors. \n  \nOpen to WCSU faculty\, staff and students only.
