DESCRIPTION:DOMESTIC VIOLENCE 101 – BACK TO BASICS: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting the following virtual event for Domestic Violence Awareness Month from National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV). \nTo kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2025\, NRCDV will offer an introductory webinar describing the dynamics and common tactics that characterize domestic violence. The presenter will provide an overview of its root causes\, as well as the scope and impact on individuals and society. She brings over a decade of experience in the anti-violence movement. She started as a mobile multilingual advocate\, where she supported Asian and Pacific Islander victims/survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence in Iowa. Later\, she served as a prevention coordinator\, where she developed community-based prevention programming in Iowa. Most recently\, she worked as national training and technical assistance provider\, focused on systems change and community collaboration approaches in rural communities. Fatima holds an MSW and a B.A. in Social Work and Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Iowa. In her free time\, she enjoys cooking\, reading\, and thrifting.

DESCRIPTION:NUESTRA AMERICA – STORIES OF 30 INSPIRING LATINAS/LATINOS WHO HAVE SHAPED THE UNITED STATES: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event that the Danbury Library is sponsoring. \nJoin in conversation with Smithsonian professionals Adrián Aldaba and Emily Key as they discuss Nuestra América and highlight inspiring stories of Latinos throughout history\, as well as their incredible contributions to the cultural\, social\, and political character of the United States. \nThe stories in Nuestra América cover each figure’s cultural background and childhood\, and their accomplishments or contributions to American history. A glossary of terms and discussion question-filled reading guide\, created by the National Museum of the American Latino\, encourages further research and exploration. The museum has featured twenty-three of these stories in its exhibition ¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States\, the first exhibition to feature U.S. Latino history at the national level. \nFeaturing beautifully illustrated portraits by Gloria Félix\, this is a book that children (and adults) will page through and learn from again and again. His music honors the richness of his heritage while also carrying messages of social justice\, cultural pride\, and community connection. As part of Hispanic Heritage Month\, this performance is more than entertainment\, it’s a celebration of identity\, tradition\, and the lasting contributions of the Hispanic community. \nReyes is a Bridgeport-born troubadour\, songwriter\, and storyteller whose music blends Puerto Rican folk traditions with rock\, salsa\, Latin jazz\, and socially conscious themes. Drawing from his upbringing in Puerto Rico and experiences of identity\, resilience\, and justice\, Reyes creates powerful songs that honor heritage while inspiring hope. Through projects like the Cosmic Jíbaros\, Pasofino Social Club\, and Novela Sin Tiempo\, his work celebrates culture\, community\, and the courage to dream. His latest project\, The Puerto Rican Song Book\, uplifts the voices and history of Puerto Rican singer-songwriters\, offering audiences both music and meaning.

DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR CARLOS ANDRES GOMEZ: In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is proud to bring International Book Award-winning author\, Carlos Andrés Gómez\, to Western Connecticut State University. \nColombian American poet Carlos Andrés Gómez\, star of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and the Spike Lee movie “Inside Man” with Denzel Washington\, will perform his original work from 1 to 2 p.m. in Midtown Student Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing with Gómez. \nCarlos Andrés Gómez is the author of “Hijito\,” for which he was awarded the Foreword INDIES Gold Medal and the International Book Award in 2020\, and the coming-of-age memoir “Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood\,” released by Penguin Random House in 2012. His most recent book\, “Fractures\,” was selected by Pulitzer Prize winner and 19th U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey as the winner of the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry. With keynotes and performances at more than 1\,500 colleges\, universities\, independent schools\, and companies in 47 U.S. states and 29 countries across six continents\, Gómez is one of the highest booked acts in the history of the college market and among the most sought-after keynote speakers in the world. He has been featured on NPR\, PBS\, TEDx\, Upworthy\, Central Park SummerStage\, Lincoln Center\, and partnered with John Legend for Senior Orientation\, a program to counteract bullying and champion inclusive masculinity among high school students. \nA former social worker and public school teacher\, Gómez first made a name for himself by winning at the Apollo Theater’s celebrated Amateur Night and later as a member of the renowned Nuyorican Poets Café’s slam team. In 2008\, he collaborated with Tony Award-winning tap dance legend Savion Glover on Broadway.
