DESCRIPTION:MOJOS\, MERMAIDS\, MEDICINE\, AND 400 YEARS OF BLACK WOMEN’S MAGIC: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion is promoting this virtual event from the Danbury Library. \nFeminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book\, “The Conjuring of America: Mojos\, Mermaids\, Medicine\, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic\,” tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women\, in secrecy and subterfuge\, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. \nConjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary — from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix\, to the original magic of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” (2023)\, and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. \nFrom the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores\, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now\, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history\, sourcing letters from the enslaved\, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. DESCRIPTION:JELLY’S LAST JAM (BROADWAY): A WCSU Black History Month Event Presented by The Fourth Wall and Shuffle! \n“Jelly’s Last Jam” is a Tony Award-winning musical about jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton\, set in a purgatorial afterlife where Morton confronts his Creole past in New Orleans\, his path to success\, and the denial of his African American roots. The show uses Morton’s own music\, with lyrics by Susan Birkenhead and music by Morton and Luther Henderson\, to tell a story about race\, legacy\, and the complexities of the Black experience in America\, breaking ground as a major African American-created musical. Dynamic tap choreography with Hines and Savion Glover\, and Hine’s own Tony-winning performance in the lead role\, help to set off musical fireworks. \nNo admission fee\, but seating is limited. Screening begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Center Theatre on Film and Tape Archive/New York Public Library. Attendees are responsible for their own transportation to Lincoln Center in New York City. (10 Lincoln Center Plaza/1941 Broadway). We will meet at 12:15 p.m. at the Lincoln Center Fountain Plaza and proceed inside as a group. DESCRIPTION:FIRST GENERATION CELEBRATION: Join us in celebrating First Generation students\, faculty and staff from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Berkshire Hall lounge on the Midtown campus. \nThe event will feature: \n11 a.m.: Welcoming Remarks by Robert Pote\, Director of Pre-Collegiate and Access Programs\n11:15 a.m.: Presidential Address by Dr. Jesse Bernal\n11:25 a.m.: Remarks by Mr. Farooq Kathwari\n11:30 a.m.– 12:10 p.m.: Students\, alumni\, faculty\, and administration will share their experiences\n12:15 p.m.: First-Generation students\, alumni\, faculty\, and staff group picture\n1 – 1:45 p.m.: SGA Presents: Musical Chairs – Prizes included!\n1:50 – 2 p.m.: Event concludes \nThe Career and WCSU Resource Fair will be ongoing throughout the event. DESCRIPTION:DIA DE MUERTOS OFRENDA (DAY OF THE DEAD): Día de Muertos: Honoring Life & Legacy 💐 \nJoin us in celebrating Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) — a time to honor and remember loved ones who have passed. From October 30 to November 6\, we invite you to visit our ofrenda (altar) and take part in this beautiful tradition of remembrance. 🕯️🌼 \nThe altar will be in the Warner Hall Lyceum on the Midtown campus from Oct. 30 to Nov. 4\, at which time it will be relocated to White Hall\, also on the Midtown campus\, for Nov. 5 and 6. \nBring a photo or item to add to the ofrenda as we come together to celebrate life\, love\, and memory. ❤️ \nThis event is sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences\, LASO\, WCSU Beyond Borders\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, & Inclusion\, and the UndocuAlly Taskforce.
