DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR CARLOS ANDRES GOMEZ: In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is proud to bring International Book Award-winning author\, Carlos Andrés Gómez\, to Western Connecticut State University. \nColombian American poet Carlos Andrés Gómez\, star of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and the Spike Lee movie “Inside Man” with Denzel Washington\, will perform his original work from 1 to 2 p.m. in Midtown Student Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing with Gómez. \nCarlos Andrés Gómez is the author of “Hijito\,” for which he was awarded the Foreword INDIES Gold Medal and the International Book Award in 2020\, and the coming-of-age memoir “Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood\,” released by Penguin Random House in 2012. His most recent book\, “Fractures\,” was selected by Pulitzer Prize winner and 19th U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey as the winner of the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry. With keynotes and performances at more than 1\,500 colleges\, universities\, independent schools\, and companies in 47 U.S. states and 29 countries across six continents\, Gómez is one of the highest booked acts in the history of the college market and among the most sought-after keynote speakers in the world. He has been featured on NPR\, PBS\, TEDx\, Upworthy\, Central Park SummerStage\, Lincoln Center\, and partnered with John Legend for Senior Orientation\, a program to counteract bullying and champion inclusive masculinity among high school students. \nA former social worker and public school teacher\, Gómez first made a name for himself by winning at the Apollo Theater’s celebrated Amateur Night and later as a member of the renowned Nuyorican Poets Café’s slam team. In 2008\, he collaborated with Tony Award-winning tap dance legend Savion Glover on Broadway. As part of Hispanic Heritage Month\, this performance is more than entertainment\, it’s a celebration of identity\, tradition\, and the lasting contributions of the Hispanic community. \nReyes is a Bridgeport-born troubadour\, songwriter\, and storyteller whose music blends Puerto Rican folk traditions with rock\, salsa\, Latin jazz\, and socially conscious themes. Drawing from his upbringing in Puerto Rico and experiences of identity\, resilience\, and justice\, Reyes creates powerful songs that honor heritage while inspiring hope. A glossary of terms and discussion question-filled reading guide\, created by the National Museum of the American Latino\, encourages further research and exploration. The museum has featured twenty-three of these stories in its exhibition ¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States\, the first exhibition to feature U.S. Latino history at the national level. \nFeaturing beautifully illustrated portraits by Gloria Félix\, this is a book that children (and adults) will page through and learn from again and again. The presenter will provide an overview of its root causes\, as well as the scope and impact on individuals and society. She started as a mobile multilingual advocate\, where she supported Asian and Pacific Islander victims/survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence in Iowa. Later\, she served as a prevention coordinator\, where she developed community-based prevention programming in Iowa. Most recently\, she worked as national training and technical assistance provider\, focused on systems change and community collaboration approaches in rural communities. Fatima holds an MSW and a B.A. in Social Work and Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Iowa. In her free time\, she enjoys cooking\, reading\, and thrifting.

This solemn gathering will commemorate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Medgar Evers\, who was assassinated on June 12\, 1963. The tree\, planted by Danbury’s Black community in his memory as part of the city’s very first Juneteenth observance\, stands as a living symbol of resilience and remembrance. A commemorative wreath will be placed at the site and remain through the weekend. TERRY ANNE SCOTT: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nJoin Institute for Common Power Director Dr. Terry Anne Scott as she examines the history of Juneteenth and discusses its legacy from 8 to 9 p.m. \nDr. Terry Anne Scott is an award-winning historian\, author\, and speaker. She is the Director of the Institute for Common Power\, an educational 501(c)3 branch of Common Power that catalyzes people to action through experiential learning opportunities such as workshops\, lectures\, courses\, learning tours\, national educational events. Dr. Scott is a former Professor of African American History and Chair of the Department of History at Hood College. She has also taught at the University of Washington and the University of Maryland. Dr. Scott is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Sports History and a member of the Editorial Staff for the Journal of American History. She is the author of several books\, including Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas (winner of the 2022 Ottis Lock Endowment Best Book Award) and the forthcoming From Bed-Stuy to the Hall of Fame: The Unexpected Life of Lenny Wilkens. She is also the editor of Seattle Sports: Play\, Identity\, and Pursuit in the Emerald City. Dr. Scott appears in several critically acclaimed documentaries\, including “Lynching Postcards: Token of a Great Day\,” which won a 2022 NAACP Image Award and was short-listed for an Academy Award. DESCRIPTION:THE HISTORY OF EMANCIPATION AND JUNETEENTH: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nHistorian Christopher Daley leads a Zoom presentation\, “The History of Emancipation & Juneteenth” on Wednesday\, June 11\, at 7 p.m. \nThis program is sponsored by The Friends of the Englewood Library. \nThe presentation\, The History of Emancipation & Juneteenth\, offers an exciting and engaging exploration of key events and milestones in the journey to freedom. It covers the abolitionist movement\, the election of Abraham Lincoln\, Fremont’s Emancipation\, Hunter’s Emancipation\, and General Benjamin Butler’s “Contraband of War” orders. It delves into the Emancipation Proclamation—its timing\, political implications\, and the people it directly impacted—as well as the gradual emancipation of enslaved individuals by Federal troops as they advanced through Confederate states. The presentation also highlights the end of the Civil War\, the arrival of Federal troops in Texas\, and the historic issuance of General Order No. 3 on June 19\, 1865\, in Galveston\, Texas. DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR TALK – KEVIN NGUYEN ON “MY DOCUMENTS”: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this event in honor of AAPI Heritage Month (Asian American Pacific Heritage Month). \nCelebrate AAPI month with author Kevin Nguyen and his new book\, “Mỹ Documents.” Nguyen will be in conversation with educator and AAPI activist Jennifer Heikkila Diaz. \nThis event is presented in partnership with AAPI Westport. \nAs an author\, journalist\, and editor at The Verge\, Kevin Nguyen’s work often explores what happens at the intersection of technology\, humanity\, and culture. His incisive and darkly satirical new novel\, “Mỹ Documents\,” couldn’t be timelier — or more engrossing. \nA moving speculative novel about a Vietnamese American family confronting ambition and assimilation during exceptionally troubled times\, “Mỹ Documents” gives a version of reality only a few degrees away from our own. Nguyen\, whose work grew from extensive research on the incarceration of Japanese citizens in the U.S. during the 1940s\, imagines what a mass detention program might look like in the age of the internet. \nKevin Nguyen is features editor of The Verge\, and was previously a senior editor at GQ. He has edited stories that have been finalists for the National Magazine Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His debut novel\, “New Waves” (2020\, One World)\, was one of NPR’s Best Books of the Year in 2020\, and was widely celebrated for its mordant humor\, fierce intelligence\, and stylish prose. Author Bryan Washington called it “a delight and a gamble and a treasure and a miracle.” \nJennifer (JHD/Jenny) Heikkila Díaz (they/she) is a professional learning coordinator for the Connecticut Council for the Social Studies and a facilitator of statewide teacher communities as a member of the Anti-Racist Teaching and Learning Collective Steering Committee and as a UConn AAASI Activist in Residence. For nearly 25 years\, JHD has worked as a K-12 public school teacher\, school administrator\, and educator coach in Baltimore\, South Central Los Angeles\, Long Beach\, Echo Park\, Queens\, and across Connecticut. They are a New Havener and co-chair of the Asian Pacific American Coalition of CT (APAC).
