DESCRIPTION:SIN INDIFERENCIA – MEXICAN ART AND OBJECTS 1956-1973 FROM THE WCSU ARCHIVES’ COLLECTION: This exhibition of WCSU’s Mexican art and objects from 1956-1973 compels us to consider the theme of “otherness” through the lens of Mexican modernism\, provenance\, ancient aesthetics\, and the power of art to bridge cultural divides. “Sin Indiferncia” or “Without Indifference” is the title of a sculpture in this exhibit by Mexican artist\, Herbert Hofmann-Ysenbourg\, and speaks to how WCSU looked past otherness and came to possess and preserve these objects. \nThe exhibition is open from Thursday\, Oct. 2\, through Sunday\, Dec. 7. Gallery hours are Tues–Fri\, noon to 4 p.m.; and Sat–Sun\, 1 to 4 p.m. There will be an Opening Reception on Thursday\, Oct. 2\, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. DESCRIPTION:GALLERY OPENING – COLOR + LIGHT: \nOn view Feb. 7 – March 2\, 2025\nClosing Reception: Sunday\, March 2\, noon – 2 p.m. \nFritz Horstman\nAnne Lindberg\nGreg Lock\nPete Mauney\nColleen McGuire\nJulia Rooney \nPost-Impressionist artist George Seurat’s most famous painting “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte” inspired Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park with George” WCSU Dept. of Theatre Arts’ spring production (Feb. 21 – March 2). The exhibition Color and Light\, presented in conjunction with the production\, features six visual artists whose works are concerned with the interaction of color and the phenomenon of light. The exhibition will include artworks in cyanotype\, drawing\, painting\, photography\, stop motion animation\, and video. The title Color and Light is derived from a song in Act I; a “sneak peek” performance of the song by cast members is planned as part of the reception on Feb. 6. DESCRIPTION:THE SPACE BETWEEN EXHIBITION OPENING: The Judy Black Memorial and Gardens will host its last exhibition of the 2024 season\, The Space Between\, a WCSU-focused exhibition featuring work by three Painting & Interdisciplinary MFA Art Faculty\, and eight MFA alumni. The art opening will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday\, Dec. 8\, at the Judy Black Memorial and Gardens\, 1 Green Hill Road\, Washington Depot\, Connecticut. \nThe professors exhibiting work in this show are Riley Brewster\, Rob Nadeau and Sabrina Marques. \nThe alumni exhibiting work in this show are Lucy Gallagher ’24\, Kelsey Gilmore ’22\, Lilah Heyman ’23\, Aimee Jette ’23\, Megan Marden ’12\, Sarah Stewart ’11\, Erin Walrath ’18\, and Janet Warner ’17. \nThis exhibition includes a range of work and highlights a diversity of artistic approaches to abstraction\, realism\, and sculptural form. The Space Between speaks to the literal and metaphorical nature inherent within the practice of artmaking. It will be on view through Sunday\, Dec. 22.
