SUMMARY:Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY OPENING – LISA ELMALEH\, “TIERRA PROMETIDA / JESSICA WOLFF\, “THE NEW MESTIZA”: \nLisa Elmaleh: Tierra Prometida\nJessica Wolff: The New Mestiza\nTwo Photographers Depict Stories of Migration and Immigration \nOn view Sept 12–Oct 13\, 2024\nOpening Reception: Thurs\, Sept 12\, 2024\n6 – 8 p.m. \nTHE GALLERY at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\nWestern Connecticut State University\nWestside Campus\, 43 Lake Ave Extension\, Danbury\, CT 06811\nGallery Hours: Tues–Fri\, noon – 4 p.m.\, Sat–Sun\, 1 – 4 p.m. \nLisa Elmaleh’s series of photographs\, Tierra Prometida\, captures the multifaceted aspects of migration along the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Her work encompasses the people\, landscape\, migratory routes\, and humanitarian efforts in the area. While conveying both empathy and urgency\, her work challenges the myth of the American Dream from the perspective of the borderland environs\, the individuals seeking asylum in the United States\, and the volunteers and groups involved in providing essential assistance to migrants. \nJessica Wolff’s photographs delve into the experience of being Mexican-American and navigating the dynamics of two cultures that often clash or contradict each other. Embracing the term “mestizos” (of mixed race)\, Jessica acknowledges her and her subjects’ Indigenous and Spanish ancestry. Using symbols and icons from both Mexican and American history\, she creates a fusion that represents a new culture\, new myths\, new icons\, and new images\, where there is no longer a strict division between Mexican and American identities\, but rather the emergence of a new mestiza culture. \nReserve a spot for the reception at www.eventbrite.com/e/art-opening-lisa-elmaleh-tierra-prometidajessica-wolff-the-new-mestiza-tickets-917287861687

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening - "The Circe Effect"
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY OPENING – ‘THE CIRCE EFFECT: WOMEN’S CREATIVE POWER RECLAIMS THE NARRATIVE’: The Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Western Connecticut State University will present “The Circe Effect: Women’s Creative Power Reclaims the Narrative\,” featuring the work of Madeleine Conover\, Donna Dodson\, Katiushka Melo\, Cheryl Mukherji\, Dana Robinson and Chelsea Steinberg Gay. The exhibit will be on view from February 8 – March 3\, 2024. The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday\, Feb.8\, during which Melo will perform. Reserve tickets at www.eventbrite.com/e/gallery-opening-the-circe-effect-tickets-811659915657. \nThe exhibit is inspired by themes explored in the best-selling novel “Circe” by Madeline Miller. The narrator is Circe herself\, goddess and sorceress from the ancient Greek epic\, the “Odyssey.” The New York Times called the novel “A bold and subversive retelling of the goddess’ story … recasting the most infamous female figure from the ‘Odyssey’ as a hero in her own right.” In the novel\, Circe takes ownership of her story and tells it on her own terms\, thereby releasing herself from the constraints of the Western cultural imagination that often presents her one dimensionally as a dangerous\, seductive witch. \nMiller’s methodology has struck a cultural chord by addressing the familiar feminist principles of women’s power and agency\, and how they are received when women orchestrate the narrative\, but also by challenging and even recasting stereotypes. Collectively\, the work of the artists gathered in the exhibition addresses these subjects from contemporary points of view. The exhibit includes works in sculpture\, painting\, photography\, performance\, installation\, printmaking and drawing. Additionally\, a “Circe” book discussion group for students will be co-presented by the WCSU libraries and the Department of Art\, with books donated by the Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) Big Read. \nThe Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center is located on the second floor of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus\, 43 Lake Ave. Extension\, Danbury. For more information about the exhibit\, visit www.wcsu.edu/art/gallery/ or call (203) 837-3982.  Reserve a spot at the reception at www.eventbrite.com/e/gallery-opening-the-circe-effect-tickets-811659915657. The Gallery is open Tuesdays–Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Please note the gallery is closed during Presidents Day Weekend\, Feb.16-19.

SUMMARY:"Pond Reflections"
DESCRIPTION:FILM SCREENING & ARTIST TALK WITH ADDRESS: EARTH ARTIST\, ROSALIND SCHNEIDER: As part of the exhibition\, Address: Earth in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, artist\, and filmmaker Rosalind Schneider will present a screening of her film\, “Pond Reflections\,” and discuss her work from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event will take place in Choir Room 108 at the Visual & Performing Arts Center. \n“Pond Reflections” is footage collected over three years of seasonal reflections on water as the primal source of creation. Surrounding trees\, rocks\, and landscape trace the cycle of life. Peter Rubin\, a recent graduate of the Berklee School of Music composed the film score and may also participate in the discussion. \nRosalind Schneider creates works that transcend their source to form a new reference to a visionary landscape. She creates layered landscape images with multiple realities that progress from the real into abstraction and a fusion of the two. Her Digital Fusion paintings result from the capture of a video frame as a starting point and are realized through hands-on manipulation. The surfaces are transformed by drawing\, acrylic\, and glass particle collage resulting in a luminous translation that speaks to its moving image origin. Multiple realities are birthed from video. Schneider was the first artist to show the film as an art at the Hirshhorn Museum\, following a solo show of her films at the Whitney Museum. Exhibitions of film\, video\, digital prints\, and paintings include the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Islip Museum\, Chelsea Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, SculptureCenter\, and MOMA (Carte Blanche: Women Writing the Language of Cinema). Her 16mm films are currently being restored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will be part of the film archive at the Academy Museum. \nMore of Schneider’s work is on view in the exhibition\, Address: Earth\, from October 13 through December 4\, 2022. The gallery will be open before and after the film screening and during regular gallery hours: Tues-Fri\, noon to 4 p.m.\, and Sat-Sun\, 1 to 4 p.m.
