DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR TALK – KEVIN NGUYEN ON “MY DOCUMENTS”: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this event in honor of AAPI Heritage Month (Asian American Pacific Heritage Month). \nCelebrate AAPI month with author Kevin Nguyen and his new book\, “Mỹ Documents.” Nguyen will be in conversation with educator and AAPI activist Jennifer Heikkila Diaz. \nThis event is presented in partnership with AAPI Westport. \nAs an author\, journalist\, and editor at The Verge\, Kevin Nguyen’s work often explores what happens at the intersection of technology\, humanity\, and culture. His incisive and darkly satirical new novel\, “Mỹ Documents\,” couldn’t be timelier — or more engrossing. \nA moving speculative novel about a Vietnamese American family confronting ambition and assimilation during exceptionally troubled times\, “Mỹ Documents” gives a version of reality only a few degrees away from our own. Nguyen\, whose work grew from extensive research on the incarceration of Japanese citizens in the U.S. during the 1940s\, imagines what a mass detention program might look like in the age of the internet. \nKevin Nguyen is features editor of The Verge\, and was previously a senior editor at GQ. He has edited stories that have been finalists for the National Magazine Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His debut novel\, “New Waves” (2020\, One World)\, was one of NPR’s Best Books of the Year in 2020\, and was widely celebrated for its mordant humor\, fierce intelligence\, and stylish prose. Author Bryan Washington called it “a delight and a gamble and a treasure and a miracle.” \nJennifer (JHD/Jenny) Heikkila Díaz (they/she) is a professional learning coordinator for the Connecticut Council for the Social Studies and a facilitator of statewide teacher communities as a member of the Anti-Racist Teaching and Learning Collective Steering Committee and as a UConn AAASI Activist in Residence. For nearly 25 years\, JHD has worked as a K-12 public school teacher\, school administrator\, and educator coach in Baltimore\, South Central Los Angeles\, Long Beach\, Echo Park\, Queens\, and across Connecticut. They are a New Havener and co-chair of the Asian Pacific American Coalition of CT (APAC). Drawing on materials from the Library’s special collections and educator resources\, this program highlights objects and stories that reflect the diversity of Jewish identity in the United States. \nParticipants will learn about NYPL’s Jewish Cookbooks LibGuide\, a resource guide that takes readers on a culinary journey through migration\, adaptation\, and memory. DESCRIPTION:THROUGH THE LENS OF TRUDE FLEISCHMANN: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this event for Jewish American Heritage Month. \nThrough the Lens of Trude Fleischmann (1895-1990) Presentation by Carey Mack Weber\, Fairfield (CT)\, followed by a conversation with Barbara Rosenburg. \nAfter opening her own studio in Vienna at the age of just 25\, Trude Fleischmann (1895-1990) had great success there in the 1920s and 30s photographing artists\, dancers\, actors\, and other key cultural figures of the era. When the Nazis invaded during the Anschluss in 1938\, she fled first to London and then to New York. She opened a studio just behind Carnegie Hall on 56th Street\, in 1940 and photographed many of the artists and intellectuals of the day\, including Eleanor Roosevelt\, Marian Anderson\, and Albert Einstein. \nPresentation by Carey Mack Weber\, Curator and Director\, Fairfield University Art Museum\, followed by a conversation with Fleischmann’s cousin\, Barbara Rosenberg Loss. She is also the founder of Boots on the Ground — an environmental justice advocate training school — and the Community Benefits Alliance\, which helps communities understand and negotiate equitable development agreements. Her work spans climate policy\, energy justice\, and insurance reform\, with a focus on empowering frontline communities to fight for what they deserve. Sharon has testified before Congress on the critical connection between climate change and the insurance industry\, highlighting how discriminatory practices undermine housing\, resilience\, and recovery in vulnerable neighborhoods. She also leads campaigns to ensure equitable access to clean energy and community-led sustainability solutions. She believes sustainability is not just a goal — it’s a right. Through education\, advocacy\, and organizing\, she is unlocking what’s possible when justice is at the center. Sharon is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College holding a B.A. in Urban Studies and an M.A. in Urban Planning. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:MFA FACULTY LECTURE – AMBER SCOON\, INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST:\nMon\, April 7\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nAmber Scoon makes art\, books\, and events. She is Assistant Professor of Art and Borgia Gallery Director at Elms College in Chicopee\, Massachusetts\, and also teaches Graduate Studies in Art History at WCSU. She is the John Berger Fellow at the European Graduate School\, where she received her Ph.D. in Philosophy\, Art\, and Critical Thought. She received her M.F.A. from American University’s two-year program in Italy and her Bachelor of Science from New York University. \nDuring the pandemic\, Scoon studied Sustainable Cultural Heritage at American University in Rome\, Italy\, working on a project\, “Revive the Spirit of Mosul.” She was the Goetemann Distinguished Artist in 2022 at the Rocky Neck Artist Colony in Gloucester\, Massachusetts. She has lectured at the Cape Ann Museum and was a visiting artist lecturer at Mount Gretna School of Art. For several years\, Scoon and artist Glenn Goldberg have been collaborating under the name Snow Drift. They received a 2022-23 Faculty Fellowship through Social Practice CUNY\, and intend to co-author the second edition of “Question Mark\,” published by Atropos Press. \nMost recently\, Scoon received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to curate an exhibition celebrating diverse cultural heritage. Her sculpture\, painting\, and performance work have been shown in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the U.S.\, most recently at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, and the Painting Center in NYC. She is the recipient of many residencies abroad\, including Africa\, Netherlands\, Spain\, India\, and China\, where time spent in cultures of storytelling and dance informs her work. \nIn 1994 McNutt was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study and work in West and Central Africa. She also received an Eastman Foundation Grant for her documentary work in West Africa\, with sojourns in Ivory Coast and Cameroon. \nIn 2018\, 2019\, and this year\, she has been a guest artist at Taoxichuan International Artists Studio in China\, with her work in their permanent collection. \nOther awards include a New York Foundation for the Arts Fiscal Sponsorship\, a Rothman Grant\, a William Hillman Foundation Grant\, and the Mercedes Matter/ Ambassador Middendorf Award (NY Studio School). She was also awarded U.S. residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, the Harwood Museum in New Mexico\, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown\, Massachusetts\, and the Watershed Center for Ceramics in Maine. DESCRIPTION:RUBY DEE AND OSSIE DAVIS IN “DO THE RIGHT THING” AND THEIR IMPACT ON U.S. FILM\, THEATRE\, AND CIVIL RIGHTS: Dr. Khalid Long of Howard University and Dr. Donald Gagnon of the WestConn Department of Theatre Arts will discuss two giants of American culture\, their impact on U. S. film and theatre\, and their engagement in the Civil Rights movement. This event will be at 3:30 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus. It is free and open to the public. \nDr. Khalid Y. Long is the Interim Associate Dean of Research and Creative Endeavors\, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at Howard University. A scholar\, dramaturg\, and director\, Long specializes in African American/Black diasporic theatre\, performance\, and literature through the lenses of Black feminist/womanist thought\, queer studies\, and performance studies. Long is co-editor of Contemporary Black Theatre and Performance: Acts of Rebellion\, Activism\, and Solidarity (Methuen Drama) and is co-editor of the forthcoming anthology\, August Wilson in Context for Cambridge University Press’s “Literature in Context” series. Long serves as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the August Wilson Society and serves on the board for the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). Long recently served as the Vice President and Conference Planner for the Black Theatre Association (ATHE) and was the Vice President for Advocacy of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. \nDr. Donald Gagnon holds a dual appointment as Professor of Theatre Arts and Professor of English at WestConn. His research\, publications\, and presentations range from African American drama to LGBTQ+ drama to musical theatre and more. The inaugural recipient of the WestConn Provost’s Award for Teaching\, he is currently compiling an academic anthology on the politics of Oscar Hammerstein II\, and he serves as a respondent for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – YING LI\, PAINTER:\nMon\, February 24\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP required \nYing Li was born in Beijing\, China\, and studied traditional landscape painting at Anhui Normal University\, where she received her BFA and then taught for six years. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1983 and received her M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. She lives and works in NYC and Haverford\, Pennsylvania\, where she is the Phlyssa Koshland Professor in Fine Arts at Haverford College\, where she has taught since 1997. \nLi’s work is represented by Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, and Alice Gauvin Gallery in Portland\, Maine. It has been featured in international exhibitions in the U.S.\, Switzerland\, Italy\, Ireland and France. In NYC\, she has shown with several galleries\, including Lohin Geduld\, Elizabeth Harris\, Tibor de Nagy\, and Lori Bookstein Fine Art. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – ERIC VELASQUEZ\, ILLUSTRATOR:\nTuesday\, April 22\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\,WCSU\, Westside Campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nEric Velasquez is an illustrator who lives and works in New York. He was born in Spanish Harlem\, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents\, and attended the High School of Art and Design. He earned his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and also studied with Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students’ League. Illustrating for over 30 years\, he teaches book illustration at FIT in NYC. \nVelasquez began his career as a freelance illustrator in 1984 and in the first 12 years\, completed over 300 book jackets and interior illustrations. These included the complete series of “Encyclopedia Brown” and “The Ghost Writers\,” among others. In 1997\, he illustrated his first picture book\, “The Piano Man” by Debbie Chocolate\, for which he won the Coretta-Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent. Many books and awards have followed. He received the NAACP Image Award in 2010 for “Our Children Can Soar\,” on which he collaborated with 12 notable illustrators of children’s literature. He also wrote and illustrated “Grandma’s Records” and “Grandma’s Gift\,” which won the 2011 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. His latest book “Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library” by Carole Boston Weatherford has gathered rave reviews and has won the 2018 Walter Award\, as well as the Golden Kite Award.

DESCRIPTION:2024 VIRTUAL CONNECTICUT LAKE SYMPOSIA: In continuation of the series that began in 2019\, the Western Connecticut State University Department of Biology\, in collaboration with the Connecticut Federation of Lakes and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection\, will host three virtual 2024 Regional Lake Communities Symposia: “The March of Hydrilla in Connecticut & Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Sept. 23; “Aquatic Invasive Species Grants in Connecticut” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Oct. 21; and “Managing Aquatics Invasive Plants” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Nov. 18. To register\, visit www.wcsu.edu/biology/lake-symposium-2024/. \nThe Sept. 23 discussion about “The March of Hydrilla in Connecticut” and “Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla” will feature WCSU Limnology Instructor Larry Marsicano\, Brawley Consulting Group LLC; Greg Bugbee\, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station\, Office of Aquatic Invasive Species\, who will address “The March of Hydrilla” and Dr. Benjamine P. Sperry\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, Engineer Research and Development Center\, who will speak about “Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla.” A question-and-answer session will follow. \nOn Oct. 21\, the topic will be “Aquatic Invasive Species Grants in Connecticut.” Marsicano will be joined by Matthew Goclowski\, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection\, Fisheries Division and AIS Grants Oversight Committee\, who will share “Five Years into Grants for the Control of Aquatic Invasive Species in Connecticut.” A discussion will follow by lake and river community stakeholders about their projects funded through the Connecticut Lakes\, Rivers\, Ponds Preservation account. \nFinally\, on Nov. 18\, “Managing Aquatics Invasive Plants” will be the focus of discussion. Marsicano will be joined by Jeff Arpin and Al Fichtel from the Amston Lake District\, who will discuss “Thwarting the Spread of Eurasian Watermilfoil at Amston Lake in Hebron\, Lebanon and Colchester\, Connecticut.” Also on the program will be Dr. Ken Wagner\, Water Resource Services\, who will speak about “Putting the RAPID in Rapid Response: Considerations for Effective Reaction to Aquatic Invasive Species.” Following an audience Q&A\, WestConn Professor of Biology Dr. Theodora Pinou will deliver closing remarks and next steps. \nThe symposia are free and the public is invited to join in via WebEx.
