SUMMARY:The Future of Sustainable Land Use and Forestry
DESCRIPTION:THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE LAND USE AND FORESTRY:  \nSpeaker: Dr. Mitch Wagener \nProfessor of Biology\, Western CT State University \nMonday\, October 14\, 2024 \n6:45 p.m. check-in; 7 p.m. program \nRegister at: bit.ly/SustainableLandandForests \nHybrid meeting (in person and virtual) \nAt the October 14\, 2024\, program of Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (HFFC) Dr. Mitch Wagener\, Climate Change educator and Professor of Biology at Western Connecticut State University\, will return to discuss sustainable land use and forestry. \nOur fate is strongly influenced by the ecological changes in our environment. As the world warms and the local climate and soil characteristics change\, trees and other large plants are affected. Alive\, those plants take in significant quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere\, but when they senesce and decompose\, that carbon is released\, which contributes to further climate change. Dr. Wagener will discuss how we can promote sustainable land use and protect the healthy\, growing forests that are vital to our future and to the future of the world’s grandchildren. \nDr. Wagener has been teaching ecology\, climate change and related courses at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury since 1996. In 2019\, he received the Aquarion Environmental Champion Award\, Individual Communication category. That same year Dr. Wagener received an official citation from the Connecticut General Assembly for his efforts in climate change education and community service. \nThis meeting is free and open to all. Join us at the Wilton (Connecticut) Quaker Meetinghouse for the presentation and come to the social hour beforehand. Gourmet pizza and refreshments will be served from 6:15-7 p.m. The presentation will start at 7 p.m. We will also be recording and broadcasting this meeting virtually via Zoom for anyone who is unable to join us in person. \nRegister at bit.ly/SustainableLandandForests to attend in person or to receive a link to participate online. \nThe Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County\, Connecticut (HFFC)\, espouses reason and compassion\, and seeks to promote humanism and free thought in our community. It holds general meetings\, film events\, book discussions\, solstice celebrations\, charitable activities\, and science roundtables. Learn more at h

SUMMARY:Dealing with Grief
DESCRIPTION:DEALING WITH GRIEF: The School of Professional Studies will present Dr. Marianne Bette to discuss “Dealing with Grief” at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Theater on the Midtown campus. \nBette is a retired 40+-year family physician from Southbury who has suffered profound losses in her life and has counseled grieving patients throughout her medical career. She has written two books on loss and grieving: “Living with a Dead Man: A Story of Love\,” that chronicles her first husband’s battle with cancer\, and her current book\, “Living with a Grieving Heart: Thoughts from a Grief Warrior\,” a personal story of her transformative journey from heartbreak to gratitude and how she reclaimed the exuberance of life. \nDr. Joan Palladino\, Dean of WestConn’s School of Professional Studies\, invited Bette to speak to students and the larger community. \n“We are having Dr. Bette come and talk about dealing with grief because it is important to learn how to deal with it\,” Palladino said. The professions in our School of Professional Studies — Nursing\, Social Work and Criminal Justice — experience grief in their jobs on a regular basis. They not only have to help others deal with a loss\, but also have to find ways to manage grief on the job within their own lives.” \nBette was a clinical professor at the University of Connecticut for 25 years\, lecturing medical students\, nurses\, practitioners and residents; presented at Grand Rounds at UCONN Medical Center where she addressed family medicine residents and faculty; and has spoken at various American Academy of Family Physicians conferences in the United States. Her article\, “Navigating Grief and Finding Calm Amidst the Storm\,” has been published in various state American Academy of Family Physicians health journals. She also has appeared on local news shows\, recorded numerous podcasts\, and spoken at libraries\, community centers\, churches\, and grief groups to share her story and knowledge with a wider audience to help others understand and navigate the grieving process and embrace life again. Through her professional career and her personal losses\, Bette inspires others with her extraordinary insight and encouragement in placing an emphasis on LIVING to help them move forward in finding happiness and fulfillment after loss.” \n

For over three years he followed scientists from a wide range of disciplines at work in the Arctic\, Antarctic\, Southern Ocean\, New Zealand\, Europe and the United States. They talk about their work\, their hopes and fears with a rare candor and directness\, resulting in an intimate portrait of the global community of researchers racing to understand our planet’s changing climate and provide a compelling case for rising CO2 as the main cause.” Visit thiniceclimate.org to learn more about the film and the efforts to fund its creation. Location: Berkshire Dining Hall\, Midtown campus. Registration is required at https://wcsutickets.regfox.com/celebrate-earth-day-with-the-wcsu-libraries. \n5 to 7 p.m. – Climate Discussion – “Tesla won’t fix climate change” with Associate Professor of Social Sciences Dr. Manoj Misra. SUMMARY:Kathwari Honors Program Public Talk
DESCRIPTION:KATHWARI HONORS PROGRAM PUBLIC TALK: The Kathwari Honors Program will welcome Dr. Brandon Brown\, author of “Sharing our Science: How to Write and Speak STEM\,” at 7 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus. Brown will discuss “Science Miscommunication: A Lighthearted Diagnostic Approach to a Serious Problem.” The public is invited. Register to attend here. \nThe explosion of technology that dominates our culture and economy in the last several years\, such as social media\, remote working culture\, the streaming services changing the broadcast industries\, medical and pharmaceutical research\, and artificial intelligence\, has made the ability to communicate clearly about science and technology a premium skill. So it’s not a luxury but a necessity for students in STEM fields as well as established professionals to learn and apply the kinds of lessons and strategies that Brown has culled from his own work and his research on the Apollo Moon Mission. Brown was on campus several years ago as one of the first winners of the Housatonic Book Award from the MFA in Creative and Professional Writing for his biography “Planck: Driven by Vision.” As he demonstrated then\, Brown’s work is interdisciplinary and adaptable to any field of science and technology\, and we warmly invite guests from local and regional technology firms. \nBrown is a professor of Physics and a communications specialist at the University of San Francisco. He has written for Slate\, Smithsonian and Scientific American. He also has served as deputy director at the Green Science Policy Institute and as a senior writing coach for the Strictly Speaking Group.

SUMMARY:Art Faculty Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:ART FACULTY LECTURE SERIES – “WHAT IS CREATIVITY? THEORY AND APPLICATION OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS” CREATIVITY WORKSHOP WITH FRANCIS PATNAUDE: At 6:30 p.m. in Room 144 of the Visual & Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus. Free and open to the public; limited seating available. \nWCSU Adjunct Professor of Art Francis T. Patnaude attended Southern Connecticut State University\, earning a B.S. in Art Education in 1975. He earned a B.F.A. in Studio Arts From Northern Kentucky University in 1978 and an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Syracuse University in 1982. Patnaude also earned a certificate in welding\, completing a full Welder Certification program at Northern Kentucky Vocational/Technical School in Covington\, Kentucky. He served as studio assistant at Studio 70 under the direction of Michael Skop\, sculptor\, and studied photography under John Daido Loori. After working for five years as an art/welder/fabricator for various artists\, Patnaude has been teaching art at Rumsey Hall School in Washington\, Connecticut\, since 1988. In addition to teaching color and design at WCSU\, he is also developing training methodologies and workshops in the area of creativity. Patnaude’s artwork consists of fabricated and cast metal sculpture\, collage\, video\, and spatial/environmental music compositions. \n“It is said that the function of the Zen Arts is to simply directly point to the true nature of reality. I believe that all art produced by human beings\, east and west\, past and present that truly nourishes the spirit and works with life as it’s media\, reflects this attitude. It is this awakened orientation combined with a methodology rooted in this awareness that finds its highest level of completion with the interweaving of society. How we as a people on this great earth honor our individual nature and yet realize that our world community is the base upon which this miraculous uniqueness rests\, is a question we must take up. Our survival depends on it. Art done with a foundation of spirit offers the opportunity to not only be a visionary guiding light\, but also a practice which directly manifest this insight. My artwork is simply an expression of working with this great matter.” \nhttp://www.francispatnaude.com

SUMMARY:World Philosophy Day: Ignorance\, Injustice\, and Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY – IGNORANCE\, INJUSTICE AND RESPONSIBILITY: To honor World Philosophy Day\, the Department of History\, Philosophy\, and World Perspectives invites you to a lecture on: Ignorance\, Injustice\, and Responsibility by Joshua Kassner J.D.\, Ph.D. \nWhen: 12:30 – 1:45 p.m.\, Thursday\, Nov. 16\nWhere: White Hall 307 \nIn recognizing the impact of digital communication and the speed with which information can be shared around the globe we reevaluate our understanding of ignorance as an excuse\, at least in matters of global injustice. We have a duty – as moral agents – to make reasonable efforts to be informed about the moral significance of our actions. Factual ignorance as an excuse applies in far fewer instances than is commonly thought. \nBio: Joshua Kassner is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Baltimore where he teaches courses in normative and applied ethics\, political philosophy\, and the philosophy of law. His research is focused on the global arena with specific interests in governing the normative framework of international relations. He has published on global justice\, international political theory\, and the morality of humanitarian intervention. Most recently\, he published a book on the moral nature and limits of state sovereignty (2021) and a chapter in an anthology on immigration\, human rights\, and state sovereignty (2022). Currently\, he is working on a book on human rights to be published later this year.
