DESCRIPTION:ECLIPSE OBSERVATION: On Monday\, April 8\, Danbury will experience a deep partial solar eclipse of about 93%! The WCSU community and general public are invited to witness the partial solar eclipse on the university’s Midtown campus. Weather permitting\, astronomy instructors and volunteers will lead safe solar viewing and eclipse-related activities from 1:45 – 4:45 p.m. outside the Science Building. Maximum eclipse occurs about 3:26 p.m. \n  \nWarning: Do not look up at the sun without a safe solar filter or eclipse glasses! Regular sunglasses do not offer enough protection!  A limited number of eclipse glasses will be available for sale at the event.  \n

DESCRIPTION:UNRAVELING STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS\, CARBON DYNAMICS AND WATER USE EFFICIENCY OF ECOSYSTEMS USING REMOTE SENSING OBSERVATATIONS AND DEEP LEARNING: The Department of Biology invites everyone to the Biology Department Seminar Fall Series. Our next speaker is Dr. Katerina Trepekli from the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen. In this seminar\, Dr. Trepekli will present new approaches for estimating and projecting carbon stocks\, structural characteristics\, and tree-species distribution at the individual-tree scale\, by utilizing drone-based/airborne instrumentation\, deep learning\, and forest growth modelling. Based on the concepts of micrometeorology\, we will discuss the potentials of gas analyzers\, laser scanners\, multispectral and thermal imagery onboard drones to map water use efficiency and vegetation indices of ecosystems at cm spatial resolution. \nFrom 4 to 5 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the Midtown campus.

DESCRIPTION:WCSU RESEARCH DAY: This showcase of undergraduate and graduate research\, scholarship\, and creative inquiry projects will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall. If you are just interested in research\, or not yet sure what you want to do in your future career\, it is a great opportunity to learn about the interesting work being done in a variety of fields by students like you right here at WCSU. It’s also a good way to meet other students who share your passions and interests. Projects are submitted from students from a whole range of fields including biology\, psychology\, education\, chemistry\, English\, and history. There are also two keynote speakers who are both graduates from WCSU. \nKeynote Speakers: Gill Simmons is a meteorologist who will be talking about humanizing the science of weather\, and Dr. Brittany Baisch is a toxicologist who will be talking about methods for making safer decisions in her field. \nIf you can’t make it for the whole time\, that’s ok. You can always stop in for the student poster sessions or the keynote speakers.

DESCRIPTION:BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT RESEARCH SEMINAR SERIES: Virtual Research Seminar: “Farm Like Bacteria Protect WI Children from Eczema and Wheezing.” Prevalence of respiratory illnesses has increased with urbanization\, but growing up on traditional farms offers protection even today. Protective effects of farming environment appears to be associated with richer house dust microbiota\, which have been proposed to be used as a health-promoting indoor microbiome. Here\, we show by training machine learning that model the differences in house dust microbiota composition between traditionally agrarian\, farm and non-farm homes of a Wisconsin birth cohort that children who grow up in non-farm homes are more likely to be protected against wheezing and eczema as their bacterial microbiota composition is more similar to that of farm and traditionally agrarian homes. DESCRIPTION:REGIONAL LAKE COMMUNITIES SYMPOSIUM – THREATS TO OUR LAKES: In continuation of the series that began in 2019\, the WCSU Department of Biology\, in collaboration with the Connecticut Federation of Lakes and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection\, will host the first of three Regional Lake Communities Symposia\, “Threats to Our Lakes: Emerging Issues of Connecticut Lakes” at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Oct. 17. The virtual symposium via WebEx will include a panel discussion moderated by WCSU Limnology Instructor Larry Marsicano\, principal limnologist at Aquatic Ecosystem Research LLC.
