SUMMARY:Inclusive School Safety Practices for Students with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:INCLUSIVE SCHOOL SAFETY PRACTICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES – PROFESSIONAL EVENT: The Connecticut Center for School Safety and Crisis Preparation at Western Connecticut State University\, in collaboration with Southern Connecticut State University\, will present a statewide professional event focused on advancing safe\, inclusive practices for students with disabilities. \nThis free\, full-day event brings together educators\, school mental health providers\, school resource officers\, disability advocates\, families\, and community partners to explore evidence-based strategies that promote student safety while honoring accessibility\, dignity\, and equity. Participants will gain practical tools\, research-informed approaches\, and real-world perspectives to support inclusive safety planning\, threat assessment\, and effective cross-disciplinary collaboration in schools. \nThe program features nationally recognized leaders in school safety\, disability advocacy\, and mental health\, along with interactive breakout sessions tailored to professional roles. Together\, we will examine how to strengthen school safety systems while ensuring that students with disabilities are supported\, understood\, and included. \nThe event will take place at the Southern Connecticut State University Michael J. Adanti Student Center\, Room 325\, 345 Fitch Street in New Haven. \n  \n8 a.m. – Sign-in opens; coffee available\n8:30–8:35 a.m. – Welcome and announcements\n8:35–8:40 a.m. – Welcome from State Representative Jennifer Leeper\, Chair of the CT Education Committee\n8:40–9:10 a.m. – Keynote: Dr. Christina Cipriano\, Director\, Education Collaboratory at Yale and Associate Professor\, Yale Child Study Center on Be Unapologetically Impatient: The Mindset Required to Change the Way We Do Things\n9:15–10:30 a.m. – Morning Plenary: Michele Gay\, M.S.\, Co-Founder & Executive Director\, Safe and Sound Schools on Especially Safe: An Inclusive Approach to Safety Preparedness \n10:45 a.m.–noon – MORNING BREAKOUT SESSIONS \nBreakout 1 – Especially Safe: Safety Planning for Students with Disabilities provided by Michele Gay – Practical strategies for developing inclusive\, trauma-informed safety plans that support students with disabilities through accessibility\, collaboration\, and equity. \nBreakout 2 – Threat Assessment and Disability: Case Studies and Best Practices\, provided by Dr. Dewey Cornell – Explore real-world cases using the CSTAG model\, with a focus on applying threat assessment fairly and effectively when students with disabilities are involved. \nBreakout 3 – Best Practices for Police Interactions with Students with Autism\, provided by Dr. Stephanie Leite –Learn communication strategies\, de-escalation techniques\, and approaches that promote safe\, respectful school-based interactions. \nnoon–1 p.m. – Lunch and networking (boxed lunch provided) \n1–2:15 p.m. – AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSIONS\nPlease note: Breakout 4 and Breakout 6 are Repeat Sessions of the morning offerings. \nBreakout 4 – Especially Safe: Safety Planning for Students with Disabilities provided \nby Michele Gay – Practical strategies for developing inclusive\, trauma-informed safety plans that support students with disabilities through accessibility\, collaboration\, and equity. \nBreakout 5 – Student Panel: Lived Experiences in Accessibility and School Safety\, with Facilitator: Elisabeth Morel – Hear directly from students about how safety policies and school environments impact accessibility\, inclusion\, and belonging. \nBreakout 6 – Best Practices for Police Interactions with Students with Autism\, provided by Dr. Stephanie Leite – Learn communication strategies\, de-escalation techniques\, and approaches that promote safe\, respectful school-based interactions. \n2:30–3:45 p.m. Closing Plenary: Research and Best Practices in Threat Assessment for Students with Disabilities presented by Dr. Dewey Cornell \n🎤 Presenters: \nDr. Christina Cipriano\, Director\, the Education Collaboratory at Yale and Associate Professor\, Yale Child Study Center; \nDr. Dewey Cornell\, Developer of the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) and Professor of Education\, University of Virginia; \nDr. Stephanie Leite\, Clinical and Forensic Psychologist\, Forensic Intelligence\, LLC; \nMichele Gay\, M.S.\, Co-Founder & Executive Director\, Safe and Sound Schools; \nElisabeth Morel\, M.Ed.\, C.A.G.S.\, Director\, AccessAbility Services\, Western Connecticut State University. \n  \nRegister to attend at https://wcsutickets.regfox.com/inclusive-school-safety-event-tuesday-april-28-2026
