SUMMARY:The Future Isn't What it Used to Be: Green Hydrogen
DESCRIPTION:THE FUTURE ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE: How do we implement Green Hydrogen and Fusion energies?  \nHuman civilization needs a reliable supply energy. When (if?) the brakes are put on fossil carbon\, we will need a variety of replacements. Some post-carbon sources are well known (solar\, wind\, hydro) while others are not.  We will learn that some solutions supply energy\, while others conserve it.  A note of caution from Mitch himself\, “The speaker is an ecologist\, not an engineer or city planner. Therefore\, definitive solutions are unlikely to be proposed. Many ideas will be discussed\, however\, and I hope that the audience will contribute some good ones.” \nThe C.H. Booth Library in Newtown will welcome Dr. Mitch Wagener\, Climate Change Educator\, WCSU Professor of Biology\, as part of its efforts to bring the 2023 UN Climate Conference in the United Arab Emirates\, Dubai  Nov. 30 – Dec. 12 to the attention of its patrons. \n\n\nDate:\nThursday Jul 13\, 2023\n\nTime:\n7  –  8:30 p.m.\n\nLocation: THIS IS A VIRTUAL EVENT\nC.H. Booth Library Virtual Meeting Space 1\n\nRegister in advance at https://www.eventkeeper.com/code/ekform.cfm?curOrg=CHBOOTH&curID=636802&CFID=82462294&CFTOKEN=75fde0e2e4b23f50-E21E6FF5-D4AE-528A-535022AA29CE1EDA

SUMMARY:Dr. Joshua Cordeira Talk
DESCRIPTION:DR. JOSHUA CORDEIRA ON “EXERCISE\, HIGH-FAT FOOD AND THE SHELF LIFE OF REWARD”: Like humans\, mice overeat high-fat food because it’s rewarding. The brain associates eating high-fat food with the feeling of pleasure which reinforces overeating behaviors. So\, why aren’t my mice overeating high-fat food? In this talk at 12:30 p.m. in the Midtown Student Center Theater\, you’ll learn about exciting and unexpected results from Dr. Cordeira’s research investigating how factors like exercise influence the reward associated with eating high-fat food.

SUMMARY:Danbury's Castle: The Hearthstone
DESCRIPTION:DANBURY’S CASTLE: ARCHITECT E.G.W. DIETRICH AND HIS DESIGN OF THE HEARTHSTONE: For the past 10 years\, Christopher Jend has researched architect E. G. W. Dietrich (1875-1924) documenting nearly 450 of his designs. In this presentation\, Jend will discuss Dietrich’s body of work from eye-catching shingle style designs to his contributions to the arts and crafts style and place in context Dietrich’s design of the local Danbury landmark “the Hearthstone.” Constructed between 1895-99 for successful portrait photographer E. Starr Sanford\, this remarkable castle-like structure is composed of local stone quarried on the site. Exhibiting historic Norman as well as Shingle Style and Arts and Crafts elements\, this unique home served as a private residence until it was purchased by the City of Danbury in 1985. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, the house and outbuildings suffered from neglect\, yet the stone walls still stand evoking romantic ideas of architecture and place. \nAttend in-person or by Zoom at 6 p.m.. DESCRIPTION:BOT SHOP (MEDIA LITERACY WEEK PRESENTATIONS): Who said that?! With increase use of artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbots\, sometimes the answer isn’t a “who\,” but rather a “what”. Learn about the history of chatbots and representations of A.I. in popular cinema with WCSU Communications and Media Arts professor\, Dr. Eric Stewart\, at 2 p.m.. Stewart will also discuss the current use and future implications of non-human actors in Hollywood and video games. His 45-minute presentation will be followed by a hands-on workshop in developing chatbots to create an interactive scene based off main characters from original student scripts using the open source scripting language\, RiveScript. \nJoin us at the Haas Library or online for this fascinating talk and workshop on artificial intelligence and chatbots in pop culture and their potential implications in real life.
