SUMMARY:From Medieval Warm Period to the Little Ice Age
DESCRIPTION:FROM MEDIEVAL WARM PERIOD TO THE LITTLE ICE AGE: Join the Danbury Library for a compelling Zoom program as Dr. Mitch Wagener from the Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences at Western Connecticut State University delves into the intricate and interconnected stories behind some of history’s most significant developments. \nThis session will explore how early contact between Europeans\, Africans\, and Native Americans led to the spread of diseases to which New World peoples had no resistance. This caused millions of deaths\, resulting in abandoned agricultural lands reverting to forests\, which removed CO2 from the atmosphere and intensified the cooling of the Little Ice Age. The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora further cooled the climate\, leading to the “Year Without Summer” in 1816. During this time\, the poet Byron inspired Mary Shelley to write “Frankenstein\,” considered the first science fiction novel. \nFrom 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. This is a virtual event via Zoom. \nFREE. Registration is Required.\nFor more information\, visit https://danburylibrary.events.mylibrary.digital/event?id=114094 or contact Aurelio Muraca amuraca@danburylibrary.org

SUMMARY:The Future of Sustainable Land Use and Forestry
DESCRIPTION:THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE LAND USE AND FORESTRY:  \nSpeaker: Dr. Mitch Wagener \nProfessor of Biology\, Western CT State University \nMonday\, October 14\, 2024 \n6:45 p.m. check-in; 7 p.m. program \nRegister at: bit.ly/SustainableLandandForests \nHybrid meeting (in person and virtual) \nAt the October 14\, 2024\, program of Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (HFFC) Dr. Mitch Wagener\, Climate Change educator and Professor of Biology at Western Connecticut State University\, will return to discuss sustainable land use and forestry. \nOur fate is strongly influenced by the ecological changes in our environment. As the world warms and the local climate and soil characteristics change\, trees and other large plants are affected. Alive\, those plants take in significant quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere\, but when they senesce and decompose\, that carbon is released\, which contributes to further climate change. Dr. Wagener will discuss how we can promote sustainable land use and protect the healthy\, growing forests that are vital to our future and to the future of the world’s grandchildren. \nDr. Wagener has been teaching ecology\, climate change and related courses at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury since 1996. In 2019\, he received the Aquarion Environmental Champion Award\, Individual Communication category. That same year Dr. Wagener received an official citation from the Connecticut General Assembly for his efforts in climate change education and community service. \nThis meeting is free and open to all. Join us at the Wilton (Connecticut) Quaker Meetinghouse for the presentation and come to the social hour beforehand. Gourmet pizza and refreshments will be served from 6:15-7 p.m. The presentation will start at 7 p.m. We will also be recording and broadcasting this meeting virtually via Zoom for anyone who is unable to join us in person. \nRegister at bit.ly/SustainableLandandForests to attend in person or to receive a link to participate online. \nThe Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County\, Connecticut (HFFC)\, espouses reason and compassion\, and seeks to promote humanism and free thought in our community. It holds general meetings\, film events\, book discussions\, solstice celebrations\, charitable activities\, and science roundtables. Learn more at h
