SUMMARY:Afghan Potter
DESCRIPTION:MATIN MALIKZADA\, AFGHAN POTTER – TALK AND DEMONSTRATION: Matin is a seventh-generation Afghan master of traditional pottery\, internationally recognized for his technical skill and elegant designs. A native of Istalif\, Afghanistan\, once a vibrant center of ceramic art and commerce\, Matin was forced to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover. Along with his family\, he resettled in New Milford\, where he has established himself as an active artist in the region. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon in White Hall 017 and is sponsored by the Office of Diversity\, the WCSU Muslim Student Association\, and the Department of Art. Professor Jurg Lanzrein\, the beloved WCSU ceramics instructor will be on hand as well.

DESCRIPTION:SURVIVOR ART GALLERY: The Center for Empowerment and Education is hosting their annual Survivor Art Gallery on Thursday April 20\, and Friday\, April 21\, from noon to 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom on the Westside Campus showcasing students’ and community members’ paintings\, drawings\, photography\, poems\, stories\, and more that exemplify their story of abuse\, assault\, trauma\, healing and survival. DESCRIPTION:BREATHING SPACE: EXPLORING COLLABORATION ACROSS ART FORMS: WCSU students and faculty will share their experiences collaborating on Breathing Space\, a broadside project featuring poems and artwork created by WCSU students. Audience members will learn about the creative opportunities of collaborating with fellow artists across forms and styles as well as participate in a short writing exercise inspired by visual art produced by the Arts Escape community. Original broadsides will be on display. Refreshments and light snacks will be served. Digital versions of last year’s broadsides can be viewed here. From 6 to 8 p.m. at Arts Escape\, 493 Heritage Road\, Suite 4C in Southbury. \nThe Department of Creative and Professional Writing is proud to expand their community partnerships to include Arts Escape. Founded in 2012\, Arts Escape encourages engagement in the arts through an extensive range of programs and classes. Their community of adult learners explore the arts in a welcoming and nonjudgmental environment. DESCRIPTION:MFA VISITING ARTIST – CATHERINE HAGGARTY\, PAINTER: The campus and public are invited to this free talk by painter Catherine Haggarty at 11 a.m. in room 144 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center. Catherine Haggarty is an artist based in Brooklyn\, New York. She earned her MFA from Mason Gross\, Rutgers University\, in 2011. An adjunct professor at School of Visual Arts\, she has also taught painting and drawing at FIT\, Hofstra University\, and Rutgers University. Additionally\, she is the Executive Director and co-founder of the NYC Crit Club. \nHaggarty’s paintings and curatorial work have been reviewed and featured in The New York Times\, The Observer\, Bomb Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Two Coats of Paint\, Brooklyn Magazine\, and Sound and Vision Podcast\, among others. Her recent solo & two person shows include: Untitled Miami (2022)\, Lorin Gallery (2022)\, Geary Contemporary\, NYC (2022)\, Massey Klein Gallery\, NYC (2020)\, Bloomsburg University\, PA (2018)\, and Look and Listen in Marseille\, France (2016). Her work has been in group exhibitions throughout the U.S.\, as well as in Berlin and Montreal. A recipient of several residencies in the US and France\, she was awarded grants from Vermont Studio Center and Mana Contemporary\, NJ. \nAs a visiting artist and lecturer\, Catherine has worked with many MFA programs including: UAlbany\, Rutgers\, MICA\, UCONN\, University of Oregon\, BU\, Hunter\, Purchase\, and Brooklyn College. In 2018\, she was the Anderson Endowed Lecturer at Penn State University.
