DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – ERIC VELASQUEZ\, ILLUSTRATOR:\nTuesday\, April 22\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\,WCSU\, Westside Campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nEric Velasquez is an illustrator who lives and works in New York. He was born in Spanish Harlem\, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents\, and attended the High School of Art and Design. He earned his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and also studied with Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students’ League. Illustrating for over 30 years\, he teaches book illustration at FIT in NYC. \nVelasquez began his career as a freelance illustrator in 1984 and in the first 12 years\, completed over 300 book jackets and interior illustrations. These included the complete series of “Encyclopedia Brown” and “The Ghost Writers\,” among others. In 1997\, he illustrated his first picture book\, “The Piano Man” by Debbie Chocolate\, for which he won the Coretta-Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent. Many books and awards have followed. He received the NAACP Image Award in 2010 for “Our Children Can Soar\,” on which he collaborated with 12 notable illustrators of children’s literature. He also wrote and illustrated “Grandma’s Records” and “Grandma’s Gift\,” which won the 2011 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. His latest book “Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library” by Carole Boston Weatherford has gathered rave reviews and has won the 2018 Walter Award\, as well as the Golden Kite Award.

DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – YING LI\, PAINTER:\nMon\, February 24\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP required \nYing Li was born in Beijing\, China\, and studied traditional landscape painting at Anhui Normal University\, where she received her BFA and then taught for six years. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1983 and received her M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. She lives and works in NYC and Haverford\, Pennsylvania\, where she is the Phlyssa Koshland Professor in Fine Arts at Haverford College\, where she has taught since 1997. \nLi’s work is represented by Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, and Alice Gauvin Gallery in Portland\, Maine. It has been featured in international exhibitions in the U.S.\, Switzerland\, Italy\, Ireland and France. In NYC\, she has shown with several galleries\, including Lohin Geduld\, Elizabeth Harris\, Tibor de Nagy\, and Lori Bookstein Fine Art. She has been in group shows at the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Academy Museum\, where she received the Edwin Palmer Memorial Prize for Painting and the Henry Ward Ranger Fund Purchase Award. \nLi has received many residency awards\, including Artist in Residence at Hollins University (in 2024)\, Dartmouth College\, Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome\, and various residency fellowships in Switzerland\, Spain\, Ireland\, France\, Canada\, and the U.S. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Art Forum\, Art in America\, and Hyperallergic\, among others. \nReserve a spot at www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-ying-li-painter-tickets-1154022415109.

DESCRIPTION:SIP AND SKETCH: Join us for an enjoyable and creative evening of drawing while listening to music\, sipping wine\, and savoring light refreshments. This event\, led by experienced artist and WestConn alumna Denise Rosa\, welcomes participants of all skill levels\, from beginners to seasoned artists\, for a shared art experience in a fun and relaxed studio environment. \nThe event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Drawing Studio\, Room 241 of the Visual & Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus.
