The exhibition Color and Light\, presented in conjunction with the production\, features six visual artists whose works are concerned with the interaction of color and the phenomenon of light. Born in Berrien Springs\, Michigan\, he received his B.A. degree from Hope College (Michigan) and his M.F..A degree from the University of Delaware. He lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York\, and is a professor of painting and drawing at Hofstra University. Since 1998\, Lee’s work has been shown throughout the U.S. in galleries and museums\, including the Neuberger Museum of Art and the Islip Art Museum. \nInternational exhibitions have been held in England\, France\, Belgium\, Germany\, and Japan. He is represented by Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in NYC\, where he has had six solo shows\, most recently in September 2024. From the press release for that show\, ”Lee challenges notions of painting as object and painting as experimentation. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1983 and received her M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. She lives and works in NYC and Haverford\, Pennsylvania\, where she is the Phlyssa Koshland Professor in Fine Arts at Haverford College\, where she has taught since 1997. \nLi’s work is represented by Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, and Alice Gauvin Gallery in Portland\, Maine. It has been featured in international exhibitions in the U.S.\, Switzerland\, Italy\, Ireland and France. In NYC\, she has shown with several galleries\, including Lohin Geduld\, Elizabeth Harris\, Tibor de Nagy\, and Lori Bookstein Fine Art. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – ERIC VELASQUEZ\, ILLUSTRATOR:\nTuesday\, April 22\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\,WCSU\, Westside Campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nEric Velasquez is an illustrator who lives and works in New York. He was born in Spanish Harlem\, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents\, and attended the High School of Art and Design. He earned his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and also studied with Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students’ League. Illustrating for over 30 years\, he teaches book illustration at FIT in NYC. \nVelasquez began his career as a freelance illustrator in 1984 and in the first 12 years\, completed over 300 book jackets and interior illustrations. These included the complete series of “Encyclopedia Brown” and “The Ghost Writers\,” among others. In 1997\, he illustrated his first picture book\, “The Piano Man” by Debbie Chocolate\, for which he won the Coretta-Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent. Many books and awards have followed. He received the NAACP Image Award in 2010 for “Our Children Can Soar\,” on which he collaborated with 12 notable illustrators of children’s literature. He also wrote and illustrated “Grandma’s Records” and “Grandma’s Gift\,” which won the 2011 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. His latest book “Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library” by Carole Boston Weatherford has gathered rave reviews and has won the 2018 Walter Award\, as well as the Golden Kite Award.

DESCRIPTION:THE SPACE BETWEEN EXHIBITION OPENING: The Judy Black Memorial and Gardens will host its last exhibition of the 2024 season\, The Space Between\, a WCSU-focused exhibition featuring work by three Painting & Interdisciplinary MFA Art Faculty\, and eight MFA alumni. The art opening will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday\, Dec. 8\, at the Judy Black Memorial and Gardens\, 1 Green Hill Road\, Washington Depot\, Connecticut. \nThe professors exhibiting work in this show are Riley Brewster\, Rob Nadeau and Sabrina Marques. \nThe alumni exhibiting work in this show are Lucy Gallagher ’24\, Kelsey Gilmore ’22\, Lilah Heyman ’23\, Aimee Jette ’23\, Megan Marden ’12\, Sarah Stewart ’11\, Erin Walrath ’18\, and Janet Warner ’17. \nThis exhibition includes a range of work and highlights a diversity of artistic approaches to abstraction\, realism\, and sculptural form. The Space Between speaks to the literal and metaphorical nature inherent within the practice of artmaking. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE WITH TOM BURCKHARD\, PAINTER: Wednesday\, Nov. 13\, 11 a.m.\, Visual and Performing Arts Center\, Room 144\, Westside campus. Free & open to the public.  Limited seating available – RSVP required at www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-tom-burckhardt-painter-tickets-951004278397 \nTom Burckhardt was born in New York City and remains a lifelong resident. He graduated with a B.F.A. in painting from SUNY Purchase in 1986 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture that same year. His work explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration\, playing with perception to discern forms and figures within multiple\, abstracted layers. \nBurckhardt’s work has been shown in over 30 solo exhibitions and countless group shows throughout the U.S. and abroad\, including McNay Art Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, Knoxville Art Museum\, Bowdoin Museum\, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. His most recent solo show of paintings was at George Adams Gallery\, NYC\, in February 2024. Other NYC gallery shows include Tibor De Nagy\, Pierogi\, DC Moore\, and Caren Golden Fine Art\, among others\, with several shows at Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco. \nIn 2016\, he participated in the Kochi Muziris Bienalle in Kerala\, India\, with an installation piece entitled “Studio Flood.” Burckhardt is the recipient of numerous grants and awards\, including three grants from the NY Foundation for the Arts\, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant\, a Guggenheim Foundation Grant\, and two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants. He was awarded two artist in residencies at Yaddo Foundation in 2024 and 2019. He was also an artist in residence at Pepper House\, Kochi\, India\, in 2020\, as well as a resident faculty at Skowhegan in 2007. Currently\, Burckhardt teaches part-time at SUNY Purchase.
