SUMMARY:Dealing with Grief
DESCRIPTION:DEALING WITH GRIEF: The School of Professional Studies will present Dr. Marianne Bette to discuss “Dealing with Grief” at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Theater on the Midtown campus. \nBette is a retired 40+-year family physician from Southbury who has suffered profound losses in her life and has counseled grieving patients throughout her medical career. She has written two books on loss and grieving: “Living with a Dead Man: A Story of Love\,” that chronicles her first husband’s battle with cancer\, and her current book\, “Living with a Grieving Heart: Thoughts from a Grief Warrior\,” a personal story of her transformative journey from heartbreak to gratitude and how she reclaimed the exuberance of life. \nDr. Joan Palladino\, Dean of WestConn’s School of Professional Studies\, invited Bette to speak to students and the larger community. \n“We are having Dr. Bette come and talk about dealing with grief because it is important to learn how to deal with it\,” Palladino said. The professions in our School of Professional Studies — Nursing\, Social Work and Criminal Justice — experience grief in their jobs on a regular basis. They not only have to help others deal with a loss\, but also have to find ways to manage grief on the job within their own lives.” \nBette was a clinical professor at the University of Connecticut for 25 years\, lecturing medical students\, nurses\, practitioners and residents; presented at Grand Rounds at UCONN Medical Center where she addressed family medicine residents and faculty; and has spoken at various American Academy of Family Physicians conferences in the United States. Her article\, “Navigating Grief and Finding Calm Amidst the Storm\,” has been published in various state American Academy of Family Physicians health journals. She also has appeared on local news shows\, recorded numerous podcasts\, and spoken at libraries\, community centers\, churches\, and grief groups to share her story and knowledge with a wider audience to help others understand and navigate the grieving process and embrace life again. Through her professional career and her personal losses\, Bette inspires others with her extraordinary insight and encouragement in placing an emphasis on LIVING to help them move forward in finding happiness and fulfillment after loss.” \n

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY OPENING – LISA ELMALEH\, “TIERRA PROMETIDA / JESSICA WOLFF\, “THE NEW MESTIZA”: \nLisa Elmaleh: Tierra Prometida\nJessica Wolff: The New Mestiza\nTwo Photographers Depict Stories of Migration and Immigration \nOn view Sept 12–Oct 13\, 2024\nOpening Reception: Thurs\, Sept 12\, 2024\n6 – 8 p.m. \nTHE GALLERY at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\nWestern Connecticut State University\nWestside Campus\, 43 Lake Ave Extension\, Danbury\, CT 06811\nGallery Hours: Tues–Fri\, noon – 4 p.m.\, Sat–Sun\, 1 – 4 p.m. \nLisa Elmaleh’s series of photographs\, Tierra Prometida\, captures the multifaceted aspects of migration along the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Her work encompasses the people\, landscape\, migratory routes\, and humanitarian efforts in the area. While conveying both empathy and urgency\, her work challenges the myth of the American Dream from the perspective of the borderland environs\, the individuals seeking asylum in the United States\, and the volunteers and groups involved in providing essential assistance to migrants. \nJessica Wolff’s photographs delve into the experience of being Mexican-American and navigating the dynamics of two cultures that often clash or contradict each other. Embracing the term “mestizos” (of mixed race)\, Jessica acknowledges her and her subjects’ Indigenous and Spanish ancestry. Using symbols and icons from both Mexican and American history\, she creates a fusion that represents a new culture\, new myths\, new icons\, and new images\, where there is no longer a strict division between Mexican and American identities\, but rather the emergence of a new mestiza culture. \nReserve a spot for the reception at www.eventbrite.com/e/art-opening-lisa-elmaleh-tierra-prometidajessica-wolff-the-new-mestiza-tickets-917287861687

SUMMARY:First-Generation College Celebration
DESCRIPTION:FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE CELEBRATION: Western Connecticut State University will host the fifth annual First-Generation College Celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Higgins Hall Patio on the Midtown campus.  During the event\, WCSU will join in celebration with other colleges across the nation that will be engaging in a number of different activities\, highlighting First-Generation college students on campus. \nStudents\, faculty\, staff\, administrators and alumni will have the opportunity to share their personal stories as First-Generation college students and the impact that experience has had on their lives. \nThe concept of a “First-Generation” student was introduced into federal policy by the passage of Higher Education Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965. As a result of these amendments\, colleges and universities have the opportunity to celebrate those who have made huge strides in this country to be the first in their family to attend college. \nThis event also will offer “First-Generation College Celebration” branded items for all First-Generation attendees. The celebration is free and the public is invited. Light snacks and beverages will be offered. \nFor more information\, contact Rob Pote\, Director of the Pre-Collegiate and Access Department at poter@wcsu.edu.
