DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR CARLOS ANDRES GOMEZ: In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is proud to bring International Book Award-winning author\, Carlos Andrés Gómez\, to Western Connecticut State University. \nColombian American poet Carlos Andrés Gómez\, star of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and the Spike Lee movie “Inside Man” with Denzel Washington\, will perform his original work from 1 to 2 p.m. in Midtown Student Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing with Gómez. \nCarlos Andrés Gómez is the author of “Hijito\,” for which he was awarded the Foreword INDIES Gold Medal and the International Book Award in 2020\, and the coming-of-age memoir “Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood\,” released by Penguin Random House in 2012. His most recent book\, “Fractures\,” was selected by Pulitzer Prize winner and 19th U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey as the winner of the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry. With keynotes and performances at more than 1\,500 colleges\, universities\, independent schools\, and companies in 47 U.S. states and 29 countries across six continents\, Gómez is one of the highest booked acts in the history of the college market and among the most sought-after keynote speakers in the world. He has been featured on NPR\, PBS\, TEDx\, Upworthy\, Central Park SummerStage\, Lincoln Center\, and partnered with John Legend for Senior Orientation\, a program to counteract bullying and champion inclusive masculinity among high school students. \nA former social worker and public school teacher\, Gómez first made a name for himself by winning at the Apollo Theater’s celebrated Amateur Night and later as a member of the renowned Nuyorican Poets Café’s slam team. In 2008\, he collaborated with Tony Award-winning tap dance legend Savion Glover on Broadway. DESCRIPTION:SIN INDIFERENCIA – MEXICAN ART AND OBJECTS 1956-1973 FROM THE WCSU ARCHIVES’ COLLECTION: This exhibition of WCSU’s Mexican art and objects from 1956-1973 compels us to consider the theme of “otherness” through the lens of Mexican modernism\, provenance\, ancient aesthetics\, and the power of art to bridge cultural divides. “Sin Indiferncia” or “Without Indifference” is the title of a sculpture in this exhibit by Mexican artist\, Herbert Hofmann-Ysenbourg\, and speaks to how WCSU looked past otherness and came to possess and preserve these objects. \nThe exhibition is open from Thursday\, Oct. 2\, through Sunday\, Dec. 7. This solemn gathering will commemorate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Medgar Evers\, who was assassinated on June 12\, 1963. The tree\, planted by Danbury’s Black community in his memory as part of the city’s very first Juneteenth observance\, stands as a living symbol of resilience and remembrance. A commemorative wreath will be placed at the site and remain through the weekend. THESIS EXHIBITION IN NYC: \nWestern Connecticut State University at Blue Mountain Gallery \n2025 MFA Thesis Exhibition\nJune 17 – July 5\, 2025 \nOPENING RECEPTION:\nThursday\, June 19\, 5–8 p.m. \nThe Department of Art at Western Connecticut State University is pleased to announce the 2025 Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition at Blue Mountain Gallery\, 547 West 27th Street\, Suite 200\, New York\, NY. \nAn opening reception will be held on Thursday\, June 19\, from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibition will run from June 17 through July 5\, 2025. The gallery is open for viewing 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.\, Tuesdays through Saturdays. \nThe M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition is the capstone experience of WCSU’s Department of Art’s Graduate Program. M.F.A. degrees are available in Painting\, Illustration\, and Interdisciplinary Visual Art. The exhibition is supported by the Jason and Ellen Hancock Student Endowment Fund at WCSU. TERRY ANNE SCOTT: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nJoin Institute for Common Power Director Dr. Terry Anne Scott as she examines the history of Juneteenth and discusses its legacy from 8 to 9 p.m. \nDr. Terry Anne Scott is an award-winning historian\, author\, and speaker. She is the Director of the Institute for Common Power\, an educational 501(c)3 branch of Common Power that catalyzes people to action through experiential learning opportunities such as workshops\, lectures\, courses\, learning tours\, national educational events. Dr. Scott is a former Professor of African American History and Chair of the Department of History at Hood College. She has also taught at the University of Washington and the University of Maryland. Dr. Scott is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Sports History and a member of the Editorial Staff for the Journal of American History. She is the author of several books\, including Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas (winner of the 2022 Ottis Lock Endowment Best Book Award) and the forthcoming From Bed-Stuy to the Hall of Fame: The Unexpected Life of Lenny Wilkens. She is also the editor of Seattle Sports: Play\, Identity\, and Pursuit in the Emerald City. Dr. Scott appears in several critically acclaimed documentaries\, including “Lynching Postcards: Token of a Great Day\,” which won a 2022 NAACP Image Award and was short-listed for an Academy Award.
