DESCRIPTION:THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE LAND USE AND FORESTRY:  \nSpeaker: Dr. Mitch Wagener \nProfessor of Biology\, Western CT State University \nMonday\, October 14\, 2024 \n6:45 p.m. check-in; 7 p.m. program \nRegister at: bit.ly/SustainableLandandForests \nHybrid meeting (in person and virtual) \nAt the October 14\, 2024\, program of Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (HFFC) Dr. Mitch Wagener\, Climate Change educator and Professor of Biology at Western Connecticut State University\, will return to discuss sustainable land use and forestry. \nOur fate is strongly influenced by the ecological changes in our environment. As the world warms and the local climate and soil characteristics change\, trees and other large plants are affected. Alive\, those plants take in significant quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere\, but when they senesce and decompose\, that carbon is released\, which contributes to further climate change. Dr. Wagener will discuss how we can promote sustainable land use and protect the healthy\, growing forests that are vital to our future and to the future of the world’s grandchildren. \nDr. Wagener has been teaching ecology\, climate change and related courses at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury since 1996. In 2019\, he received the Aquarion Environmental Champion Award\, Individual Communication category. That same year Dr. Wagener received an official citation from the Connecticut General Assembly for his efforts in climate change education and community service. \nThis meeting is free and open to all. Join us at the Wilton (Connecticut) Quaker Meetinghouse for the presentation and come to the social hour beforehand. DESCRIPTION:MFA FACULTY LECTURE – AMBER SCOON\, INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST:\nMon\, April 7\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nAmber Scoon makes art\, books\, and events. She is Assistant Professor of Art and Borgia Gallery Director at Elms College in Chicopee\, Massachusetts\, and also teaches Graduate Studies in Art History at WCSU. She is the John Berger Fellow at the European Graduate School\, where she received her Ph.D. in Philosophy\, Art\, and Critical Thought. She received her M.F.A. from American University’s two-year program in Italy and her Bachelor of Science from New York University. \nDuring the pandemic\, Scoon studied Sustainable Cultural Heritage at American University in Rome\, Italy\, working on a project\, “Revive the Spirit of Mosul.” She was the Goetemann Distinguished Artist in 2022 at the Rocky Neck Artist Colony in Gloucester\, Massachusetts. She has lectured at the Cape Ann Museum and was a visiting artist lecturer at Mount Gretna School of Art. For several years\, Scoon and artist Glenn Goldberg have been collaborating under the name Snow Drift. They received a 2022-23 Faculty Fellowship through Social Practice CUNY\, and intend to co-author the second edition of “Question Mark\,” published by Atropos Press. \nMost recently\, Scoon received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to curate an exhibition celebrating diverse cultural heritage. DESCRIPTION:KATHWARI SPRING SEMINARS – CRAFTING THE PAST: ANTHROPOLOGY BY DESIGN – IMAGINATIVE PRACTICES FOR SOCIAL ANALYSIS: Monday\, March 30\, at  2 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the Midtown campus. Dr. Christine Hegel-Cantarella is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on legal\, economic\, and environmental issues. Her current project examines the lives and livelihoods of informal recyclers in New York City in relation to recycling policy. Dr. Hegel-Cantarella also holds a B.F.A. in Theatre and over the past 15 years has collaborated with designers and artists on creative projects to make the ethnographic encounter visible and to enliven social analysis through design speculation and materialization.

Reserve tickets at www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-hangama-amiri-interdisciplinary-artist-tickets-1980479671009. \nHangama Amiri\, born in Peshawar\, Pakistan\, is an Afghan-Canadian artist. She works predominantly in textiles to explore ideas of home and the impact of gender\, social norms\, and geopolitical conflict on women’s lives in Afghanistan and the diaspora. Using a painterly approach to color and materials\, she examines how everyday objects\, such as a passport\, a vase\, and celebrity postcards\, are imbued with cultural memory and carry political and personal significance. \nAmiri earned her M.F.A. from Yale University in 2020. She received her B.F.A. from NSCAD University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, and was a Canadian Fulbright and Post-Graduate Fellow at Yale’s School of Arts and Sciences in 2015-2016. Last year\, she was shortlisted for the 2025 Sobey Art Award\, Canada’s premier contemporary visual arts prize\, in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. \nAmiri’s work has been shown nationally and internationally since 2017\, with solo shows in the U.S.\, Canada\, Italy\, France\, Germany\, and the UK. Recent exhibitions include the Esker Foundation\, Calgary; Toronto Biennial 2024; Mönchehaus Museum Goslar\, Germany; Aga Khan Museum\, Toronto; and Sharjah Biennial 15\, United Arab Emirates. In 2023\, her solo exhibition “A Homage to Home” was held at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield\, with a published catalog. It was reviewed by The New York Times\, and traveled to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Amiri is a recipient of multiple grants\, awards\, and artist residencies\, along with work in public collections\, including the Denver Art Museum.
