SUMMARY:Men's Lacrosse - LEC Finals
DESCRIPTION:WESTCONN MEN’S LACROSSE VS. MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME IN THE LEC FINALS: The Wolves will play against Massachusetts Maritime in the LEC Finals at 3:30 p.m. at the  Westside Athletic Complex. For more information\, visit https://westconnathletics.com/. \n\nJunior midfielder James Krieg (Port Jefferson\, New York) erupted for a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists to lead the top-seeded Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team to a 20-3 victory over visiting fifth-seeded Plymouth State in the semifinal round of the Little East Conference Championship tournament on Thursday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex. The Wolves will host second-seeded Massachusetts Maritime in the LEC Championship game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. \nWestConn jumped all over the Panthers and led wire-to-wire. Graduate student attack Michael Zapatka (Newington) drew first blood less than two minutes into the contest when he buried his 24th marker of the season. The hosts would lead 6-0 to end the opening quarter. The barrage continued in the second. Senior middie Tristan McMahon (Farmingville\, New York) tickled the twine with his second goal of the contest\, stretching the gap to 12-0. Plymouth State finally got on the board when Brady Hunt scored shortly before the break. McMahon quickly countered to completed the hat trick\, upping his season goal scoring total to 43\, setting the count at 13-1 at halftime. \nIt was the same story in the second half as the Panthers could not rally. WestConn senior midfielder Max Shapiro (Hicksville\, New York) rounded the flurry out at 20-3 when he took a feed from classmate Brady Francis (Middletown\, New York) and connected with the back of the net. \nRookie faceoff specialist Chase Canfora (East Islip\, New York) won 11-of-16 at the X\, while sophomore netminder Jake Kelly (Bethpage\, New York) turned aside six shots for the Wolves. It marked the first LEC Tournament semifinal matchup between the two squads. Plymouth State has now lost three straight to the Wolves. Their last victory came in the 2024 LEC Final when they downed the Wolves 16-10. WestConn has not lost to an LEC team since\, winning their last 19 contests over a two-year span. \nThe Wolves edged Mass. Maritime 11-9 earlier this season. The Mariners took care of third-seeded UMass Boston\, 15-10\, in the other semi-final matchup on Thursday evening setting up the 2026 LEC Final.

SUMMARY:Yiddish Theater\, George Gershwin\, and the Birth of an American Sound
DESCRIPTION:YIDDISH THEATER\, GEORGE GERSHWIN\, AND THE BIRTH OF AN AMERICAN SOUND: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nAs a teenager\, George Gershwin attended Yiddish theater regularly. “Khantshe in Amerike\,” by family friend Joseph Rumshinsky\, featured a working-class woman asserting her rights and her desires. But\, not only did the show include a Suffragette Parade — it has also been described as the first Yiddish musical to incorporate American rhythm. This lecture by scholar Ronald Robboy will explore the idea that Gershwin’s internalization of Black Americans’ music was influenced by his early immersion in Yiddish theater. \nRonald Robboy is a musician and independent scholar based in San Diego\, where he was a professional cellist for many years and\, beginning in the 1970s\, an early West Coast experimentalist in the klezmer revival. He has written and lectured extensively on Yiddish theater music\, and in 1998 was named Senior Researcher for Michael Tilson Thomas’s Thomashefsky Project. Robboy is leading YIVO Institute’s reconstruction of the score to composer Joseph Rumshinsky’s operetta Khantshe in Amerike (1912)\, to be performed in New York at the Center for Jewish History in May 2026. \nThis virtual event is from 1 to 2 p.m. Register at https://yivo.org/George-Gershwin

SUMMARY:“Half-Jew\, Full Life” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:‘HALF-JEW\, FULL LIFE’ BOOK TALK: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nFrom Berlin to the Bronx\, from Holocaust survivor to American success story\, Georgette Bennett’s new book\, “Half-Jew\, Full Life\,” traces the extraordinary life of Gary “Pips” Phillips who defied the odds at every turn. With an Aryan mother and Jewish father\, Pips could have escaped much of the Holocaust’s horrors. Instead\, he made a fateful decision at age 13 to become a Bar Mitzvah just as the Nuremberg Laws were enacted\, effectively choosing to be labeled a Jew under Nazi rule. Pips’ wartime experience is marked by daring escapes\, improbable rescues\, and survival while hiding deep within Nazi Berlin. Captured four times\, he escaped thrice\, choosing to remain in Nazi custody the fourth time as there was nowhere to run in bombed-out Berlin. At his place of confinement\, he met his future wife\, Olga Horvath\, who had been imprisoned after surviving Auschwitz and the Death March to Bergen Belsen. After their marriage in chaotic post-war Berlin\, they emigrated to the U.S. to start a new life. \nArriving in New York with nothing\, Pips rose from waiter to co-owner of the world’s largest photo agency — despite never owning a camera. Unlike Pips\, Olga was unable to escape the shadow of her Holocaust experiences\, and in a horrifying twist\, she threw herself off the roof of their gleaming luxury high-rise after more than 50 years of marriage\, leaving Pips grief-stricken\, but also able to reinvent himself one more time. This dramatic story brims with chance\, love\, loss\, resilience\, and reinvention\, culminating in a poignant exploration of Jewish identity\, memory\, and legacy. \nBennet will be in conversation with best-selling author Richard Walter. \nThis virtual event is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Register at https://mjhnyc.org/events/halfjewfulllife/
