SUMMARY:AE: How to Save Fireflies
DESCRIPTION:AFFILIATED EVENT: HOW TO SAVE FIREFLIES IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY: Join Sebastian Palacio\, graduate student in the Biological Diversity Program at WCSU\, at 3 p.m. for a presentation on his journey to becoming a wildlife biologist and his study of fireflies! Participants will learn about the lifecycle of fireflies\, the threats they face at each life stage and solutions that we can take to have a healthy firefly population in Danbury. Sebastian will also highlight how light pollution negatively impacts human health\, wildlife and our ability to stargaze. \nSebastian graduated in 2017 from SUNY Cobleskill majoring in wildlife management. In the last couple of years\, he has worked with several agencies including U.S Fish Wildlife\, National Audubon Society\, National Parks Service\, USGS\, and many more. His stewardship project for WCSU aims to conserve firefly populations by enhancing firefly habitat in Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary in Newtown\, CT and educating the public on firefly conservation. \nFREE! Registration is required. After registering\, you will receive a zoom link if you prefer to attend virtually.

SUMMARY:Danbury's Castle: The Hearthstone
DESCRIPTION:DANBURY’S CASTLE: ARCHITECT E.G.W. DIETRICH AND HIS DESIGN OF THE HEARTHSTONE: For the past 10 years\, Christopher Jend has researched architect E. G. W. Dietrich (1875-1924) documenting nearly 450 of his designs. In this presentation\, Jend will discuss Dietrich’s body of work from eye-catching shingle style designs to his contributions to the arts and crafts style and place in context Dietrich’s design of the local Danbury landmark “the Hearthstone.” Constructed between 1895-99 for successful portrait photographer E. Starr Sanford\, this remarkable castle-like structure is composed of local stone quarried on the site. Exhibiting historic Norman as well as Shingle Style and Arts and Crafts elements\, this unique home served as a private residence until it was purchased by the City of Danbury in 1985. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, the house and outbuildings suffered from neglect\, yet the stone walls still stand evoking romantic ideas of architecture and place. \nAttend in-person or by Zoom at 6 p.m.. SUMMARY:Our Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTAL TALK: Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences Dr. Mitch Wagener will discuss “Our Changing Climate” in a virtual talk hosted by the Danbury Library at 6:30 p.m. Climate change is the greatest challenge we face and will be our grandchildren’s challenge as well. In a warmer world\, weather events will be more severe\, sea levels higher\, and people will be displaced. It is a serious situation\, which we must meet with both our heads and our hearts. But there is hope. The study of climate change is developing very quickly. Significant new information is coming out — literally — every day. This talk will explain the basics\, but also mix in some of this new information giving us a better understanding of the world and our future. For ages 16+. Registration begins 9/7/2021 at 8 a.m. This is a virtual program. Participants will receive a ZOOM link to the program via email once they have registered.
