DESCRIPTION:MFA FACULTY LECTURE – AMBER SCOON\, INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST:\nMon\, April 7\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nAmber Scoon makes art\, books\, and events. She is Assistant Professor of Art and Borgia Gallery Director at Elms College in Chicopee\, Massachusetts\, and also teaches Graduate Studies in Art History at WCSU. She is the John Berger Fellow at the European Graduate School\, where she received her Ph.D. in Philosophy\, Art\, and Critical Thought. She received her M.F.A. from American University’s two-year program in Italy and her Bachelor of Science from New York University. \nDuring the pandemic\, Scoon studied Sustainable Cultural Heritage at American University in Rome\, Italy\, working on a project\, “Revive the Spirit of Mosul.” She was the Goetemann Distinguished Artist in 2022 at the Rocky Neck Artist Colony in Gloucester\, Massachusetts. She has lectured at the Cape Ann Museum and was a visiting artist lecturer at Mount Gretna School of Art. For several years\, Scoon and artist Glenn Goldberg have been collaborating under the name Snow Drift. They received a 2022-23 Faculty Fellowship through Social Practice CUNY\, and intend to co-author the second edition of “Question Mark\,” published by Atropos Press. \nMost recently\, Scoon received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to curate an exhibition celebrating diverse cultural heritage. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST – JENNY LYNN MCNUTT\, INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST:\nWed\, April 2\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP required \nJenny Lynn McNutt is a multimedia artist living in Brooklyn and upstate New York. Her sculpture\, painting\, and performance work have been shown in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the U.S.\, most recently at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, and the Painting Center in NYC. She is the recipient of many residencies abroad\, including Africa\, Netherlands\, Spain\, India\, and China\, where time spent in cultures of storytelling and dance informs her work. \nIn 1994 McNutt was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study and work in West and Central Africa. She also received an Eastman Foundation Grant for her documentary work in West Africa\, with sojourns in Ivory Coast and Cameroon. \nIn 2018\, 2019\, and this year\, she has been a guest artist at Taoxichuan International Artists Studio in China\, with her work in their permanent collection. \nOther awards include a New York Foundation for the Arts Fiscal Sponsorship\, a Rothman Grant\, a William Hillman Foundation Grant\, and the Mercedes Matter/ Ambassador Middendorf Award (NY Studio School). She was also awarded U.S. residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, the Harwood Museum in New Mexico\, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown\, Massachusetts\, and the Watershed Center for Ceramics in Maine. The exhibition Color and Light\, presented in conjunction with the production\, features six visual artists whose works are concerned with the interaction of color and the phenomenon of light. The exhibition will include artworks in cyanotype\, drawing\, painting\, photography\, stop motion animation\, and video. The title Color and Light is derived from a song in Act I; a “sneak peek” performance of the song by cast members is planned as part of the reception on Feb. 6. Born in Berrien Springs\, Michigan\, he received his B.A. degree from Hope College (Michigan) and his M.F..A degree from the University of Delaware. He lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York\, and is a professor of painting and drawing at Hofstra University. Since 1998\, Lee’s work has been shown throughout the U.S. in galleries and museums\, including the Neuberger Museum of Art and the Islip Art Museum. \nInternational exhibitions have been held in England\, France\, Belgium\, Germany\, and Japan. He is represented by Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in NYC\, where he has had six solo shows\, most recently in September 2024. From the press release for that show\, ”Lee challenges notions of painting as object and painting as experimentation. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – YING LI\, PAINTER:\nMon\, February 24\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP required \nYing Li was born in Beijing\, China\, and studied traditional landscape painting at Anhui Normal University\, where she received her BFA and then taught for six years. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1983 and received her M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. She lives and works in NYC and Haverford\, Pennsylvania\, where she is the Phlyssa Koshland Professor in Fine Arts at Haverford College\, where she has taught since 1997. \nLi’s work is represented by Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, and Alice Gauvin Gallery in Portland\, Maine. It has been featured in international exhibitions in the U.S.\, Switzerland\, Italy\, Ireland and France. In NYC\, she has shown with several galleries\, including Lohin Geduld\, Elizabeth Harris\, Tibor de Nagy\, and Lori Bookstein Fine Art. He was born in Spanish Harlem\, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents\, and attended the High School of Art and Design. He earned his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and also studied with Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students’ League. Illustrating for over 30 years\, he teaches book illustration at FIT in NYC. \nVelasquez began his career as a freelance illustrator in 1984 and in the first 12 years\, completed over 300 book jackets and interior illustrations. These included the complete series of “Encyclopedia Brown” and “The Ghost Writers\,” among others. In 1997\, he illustrated his first picture book\, “The Piano Man” by Debbie Chocolate\, for which he won the Coretta-Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent. Many books and awards have followed. He received the NAACP Image Award in 2010 for “Our Children Can Soar\,” on which he collaborated with 12 notable illustrators of children’s literature. He also wrote and illustrated “Grandma’s Records” and “Grandma’s Gift\,” which won the 2011 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. His latest book “Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library” by Carole Boston Weatherford has gathered rave reviews and has won the 2018 Walter Award\, as well as the Golden Kite Award.

He graduated with a B.F.A. in painting from SUNY Purchase in 1986 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture that same year. His work explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration\, playing with perception to discern forms and figures within multiple\, abstracted layers. \nBurckhardt’s work has been shown in over 30 solo exhibitions and countless group shows throughout the U.S. and abroad\, including McNay Art Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, Knoxville Art Museum\, Bowdoin Museum\, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. His most recent solo show of paintings was at George Adams Gallery\, NYC\, in February 2024. Other NYC gallery shows include Tibor De Nagy\, Pierogi\, DC Moore\, and Caren Golden Fine Art\, among others\, with several shows at Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco. \nIn 2016\, he participated in the Kochi Muziris Bienalle in Kerala\, India\, with an installation piece entitled “Studio Flood.” Burckhardt is the recipient of numerous grants and awards\, including three grants from the NY Foundation for the Arts\, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant\, a Guggenheim Foundation Grant\, and two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants. He was awarded two artist in residencies at Yaddo Foundation in 2024 and 2019. He was also an artist in residence at Pepper House\, Kochi\, India\, in 2020\, as well as a resident faculty at Skowhegan in 2007. Currently\, Burckhardt teaches part-time at SUNY Purchase.

In 2020\, she received her M.F.A. in Advanced Photographic Studies from ICP-Bard College\, New York\, where she was also a recipient of the Director’s Fellowship. In her work\, Cheryl explores the idea of origin and inheritance\, which is embedded in the figure of her mother and her presence in the family photo album. She incorporates photography\, text\, video\, and printmaking in her works\, some expanding to installations. \nCheryl is the 2024 Workspace Artist-in-Residence at Penumbra Foundation\, NYC. In 2023\, she received the highest award for the 97th Annual at the Print Center\, Philadelphia. In 2022\, she was a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the National Portrait Gallery\, Smithsonian. Previously held residencies include Stoneleaf Retreat in 2023\, Center for Photography at Woodstock in 2022\, and Baxter Street at Camera Club of New York in 2021. \nCheryl’s work was exhibited last year at The Gallery at WCSU\, where she was also a panel member for an artists’ talk. Her work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. at the Museum of the City of New York\, Brooklyn Museum\, Printed Matter\, The Print Center\, International Center of Photography\, Museum of Moving Image\, National Portrait Gallery\, and Minnesota Museum of American Art. Her work has also been shown in the United Kingdom at Huxley-Parlour Gallery and Format Photo Festival. From 2018 through 2023\, he was Coordinator and Professor of the Illustration Program at the University of New Haven. Previously\, he taught at several universities and colleges\, including UCONN and Hartford Art School. He has also taught world-building and art history in Rhodes\, Greece\, and has lectured and held workshops throughout the East Coast. Currently\, he is an adjunct professor at Tunxis Community College\, allowing for more time in his studio. \nJon’s work has been published in film\, television\, video games\, novels\, comics\, album art\, board games\, and trading cards. As an in-house and freelance illustrator\, Jon has worked with many clients\, including Hasbro\, Dwarven Forge\, Goodman Games\, and Hit Point Press. He has also worked in Hollywood as a creature-effects artist and sculptor on feature films including Godzilla and Underworld Evolution. His artwork has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the country\, and he is a frequent guest of honor at illustration conventions. \nJon is the author and illustrator of an original mythology series called Astromythos\, and he is currently completing the second book in the series. He has also written and illustrated a fifth-edition D&D adventure book\, published by Hit Point Press\, called Lair of the Spider Lord. She addresses ideas of migration\, belonging\, and identity through drawing\, painting\, printmaking\, and wearable sculptures. She holds an MFA from Yale and a BFA from Pratt. In 2015\, she was awarded the Blair Dickinson Memorial Prize by the Yale School of Art. In 2023\, she received the William Aguilar Cultural Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education for her artwork and role within her communities. Currently\, she is Critic and Acting Director of Graduate Studies for Painting and Printmaking at Yale. \nMaria has been an artist in residence at Sun Valley Museum of Art\, Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, MASS MOCA\, El Museo del Barrio\, LA County Museum of Art\, Monira Foundation\, and Schneider Museum of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include the Schneider Museum of Art\, the Museum of Sonoma County\, and Goggleworks. Exhibiting since 1983\, she first received critical attention for early shows in the East Village at Civilian Warfare and Gracie Mansion\, then later with Blum Helman and Hirschl & Adler Modern. Since 2006\, she has been represented by the Betty Cuningham Gallery. She has taught at RISD\, New York Studio School\, MICA\, and Purchase College. In 2018\, she was Artist in Residence at Dartmouth College. \nGlantzman’s work has been shown and reviewed throughout the U.S. and internationally in Germany\, Italy\, the Netherlands\, and Canada. She was honored by The Dactyl Foundation in NYC with a thirty-year retrospective in 2009. Her 2019 solo show at Betty Cuningham Gallery was a forty-year retrospective\, which inspired a public interview with art historian Jennifer Samet\, later published in Hyperallergic. \nGlantzman’s numerous awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship; two NY Foundation for the Arts grants; a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant; Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation grant; and a NY Artist Space Exhibition grant. In 2018\, she was elected to the National Academy of Design. Her works are in many private and public collections\, including the Whitney Museum of American Art; Phoenix Art Museum; Tampa Museum of Art; Weatherspoon Art Museum; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Admission will be free to the reception and the exhibition\, and the public is invited. \nThe WCSU Department of Art presents the Senior Portfolio Exhibition each spring as a capstone experience for students pursuing the B.A. in Art in one of four areas of concentration: graphic design\, illustration\, photography and studio arts (painting). Reserve a spot here. \nEric Aho is a painter who lives and works in Saxtons River\, VT. He studied at the Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London and received a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. In 1989\, he participated in the first exchange of scholars in over thirty years between the U.S. and Cuba. He completed his graduate work at the Lahti Art Institute in Finland on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1991-92 and an American-Scandinavian Foundation grant in 1993. \nAho’s works have been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. Currently represented by DC Moore Gallery in NYC\, he has had 7 solo exhibitions there from 2009 to 2022. He has also had several museum shows\, including the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Hood Museum of Art\, and Portland Art Museum. In 2016\, the New Britain Museum of American Art presented “Eric Aho: An Unfinished Point in a Vast Surrounding\,” which comprised over 50 paintings of the French landscape exploring the path of his father’s experience in WW II. \nIn 2009\, Aho was elected to the National Academy Museum. He is a recipient of numerous grants and awards\, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant; the John Koch Award for Painting from the National Academy; and an Artist Residency at the Weir Farm National Historical Park. His works are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The New York Public Library; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; New Britain Museum of American Art; Denver Art Museum; and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, among others.

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening - "The Circe Effect"
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY OPENING – ‘THE CIRCE EFFECT: WOMEN’S CREATIVE POWER RECLAIMS THE NARRATIVE’: The Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Western Connecticut State University will present “The Circe Effect: Women’s Creative Power Reclaims the Narrative\,” featuring the work of Madeleine Conover\, Donna Dodson\, Katiushka Melo\, Cheryl Mukherji\, Dana Robinson and Chelsea Steinberg Gay. The exhibit will be on view from February 8 – March 3\, 2024. The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday\, Feb.8\, during which Melo will perform. Reserve tickets at www.eventbrite.com/e/gallery-opening-the-circe-effect-tickets-811659915657. \nThe exhibit is inspired by themes explored in the best-selling novel “Circe” by Madeline Miller. The narrator is Circe herself\, goddess and sorceress from the ancient Greek epic\, the “Odyssey.” The New York Times called the novel “A bold and subversive retelling of the goddess’ story … recasting the most infamous female figure from the ‘Odyssey’ as a hero in her own right.” In the novel\, Circe takes ownership of her story and tells it on her own terms\, thereby releasing herself from the constraints of the Western cultural imagination that often presents her one dimensionally as a dangerous\, seductive witch. \nMiller’s methodology has struck a cultural chord by addressing the familiar feminist principles of women’s power and agency\, and how they are received when women orchestrate the narrative\, but also by challenging and even recasting stereotypes. Collectively\, the work of the artists gathered in the exhibition addresses these subjects from contemporary points of view. The exhibit includes works in sculpture\, painting\, photography\, performance\, installation\, printmaking and drawing. Additionally\, a “Circe” book discussion group for students will be co-presented by the WCSU libraries and the Department of Art\, with books donated by the Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) Big Read. \nThe Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center is located on the second floor of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus\, 43 Lake Ave. Extension\, Danbury.
