SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Lecture
DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE\, WILL HUTNICK\, ARTIST/CURATOR: 11 a.m.\, Visual & Performing Arts Center\, Room 144\, WCSU Westside campus. Free and open to the public\, but limited seating available. \nWill Hutnick is an artist and curator based in Wassaic\, New York. He received his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 2011 and his B.A. from Providence College in 2007. He is a 2021 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Painting\, and a recipient of grants from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation in 2017 and Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2016. \nHutnick’s work has been in solo exhibitions at Pamela Salisbury Gallery\, Elijah Wheat Showroom\, Standard Space\, Providence College Galleries\, One River School\, The Java Project\, and St. Thomas Aquinas College. Group exhibitions include: Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art\, Hollis Taggart\, Heaven Gallery and Geary Contemporary. \nHutnick has been awarded numerous artist-in-residencies\, including Yaddo\, Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency\, Vermont Studio Center\, Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences\, and others. He has also been a curator-in-residence at Benaco Arte and at Trestle Projects\, and has curated exhibitions at SPRING/BREAK Art Show\, Pratt Institute\, and Wassaic Project\, among others. \nFrom 2015 – 2020\, Hutnick was one of the co-directors of Ortega y Gasset Projects\, an artist-run curatorial collective and exhibition space in Brooklyn. He is currently the Director of Artistic Programming at the Wassaic Project\, a nonprofit organization that uses art and art education to foster positive social change.

DESCRIPTION:2023 MFA THESIS EXHIBITION AT BLUE MOUNTAIN GALLERY:  \nAll are welcome to attend the Opening Reception on Thursday\, June 22\, from 5 – 8 p.m. \nThe Exhibition will be on view from June 20–July 8\, 2023.\nGallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday\, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.\, located at 547 West 27 Street\, Suite 200\, New York\, NY. \nThe MFA Thesis Exhibition is the summation of two years of intensive\, creative study and extensive interaction with resident faculty and visiting artists for students of WCSU’s Department of Art’s Graduate Program. This exhibition is supported by the Jason and Ellen Hancock Student Endowment Fund at Western Connecticut State University. \nThe Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts is the preferred degree for the practicing artist who is preparing for a professional career in the visual arts. The MFA Thesis Exhibition is the capstone experience of the graduate program\, demonstrating a personal direction and mastery in the work of the artists. DESCRIPTION:MFA VISITING ARTIST – CATHERINE HAGGARTY\, PAINTER: The campus and public are invited to this free talk by painter Catherine Haggarty at 11 a.m. in room 144 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center. Catherine Haggarty is an artist based in Brooklyn\, New York. She earned her MFA from Mason Gross\, Rutgers University\, in 2011. An adjunct professor at School of Visual Arts\, she has also taught painting and drawing at FIT\, Hofstra University\, and Rutgers University. Additionally\, she is the Executive Director and co-founder of the NYC Crit Club. \nHaggarty’s paintings and curatorial work have been reviewed and featured in The New York Times\, The Observer\, Bomb Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Two Coats of Paint\, Brooklyn Magazine\, and Sound and Vision Podcast\, among others. Her recent solo & two person shows include: Untitled Miami (2022)\, Lorin Gallery (2022)\, Geary Contemporary\, NYC (2022)\, Massey Klein Gallery\, NYC (2020)\, Bloomsburg University\, PA (2018)\, and Look and Listen in Marseille\, France (2016). Her work has been in group exhibitions throughout the U.S.\, as well as in Berlin and Montreal. A recipient of several residencies in the US and France\, she was awarded grants from Vermont Studio Center and Mana Contemporary\, NJ. \nAs a visiting artist and lecturer\, Catherine has worked with many MFA programs including: UAlbany\, Rutgers\, MICA\, UCONN\, University of Oregon\, BU\, Hunter\, Purchase\, and Brooklyn College. In 2018\, she was the Anderson Endowed Lecturer at Penn State University.

SUMMARY:Afghan Potter
DESCRIPTION:MATIN MALIKZADA\, AFGHAN POTTER – TALK AND DEMONSTRATION: Matin is a seventh-generation Afghan master of traditional pottery\, internationally recognized for his technical skill and elegant designs. A native of Istalif\, Afghanistan\, once a vibrant center of ceramic art and commerce\, Matin was forced to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover. Along with his family\, he resettled in New Milford\, where he has established himself as an active artist in the region. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon in White Hall 017 and is sponsored by the Office of Diversity\, the WCSU Muslim Student Association\, and the Department of Art. Professor Jurg Lanzrein\, the beloved WCSU ceramics instructor will be on hand as well.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk - Landscape in Art: From Delight to Alert by Marcy Freedman
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY TALK – LANDSCAPE IN ART: FROM DELIGHT TO ALERT BY MARCY FREEDMAN: As part of the exhibition\, Address: Earth in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, artist and art historian Marcy B Freedman will present a gallery talk\, “Landscape in Art: From Delight to Alert\,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event will take place in Choir Room 108 at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, WCSU’s Westside Campus. \nFreedman will examine the role of the natural world in works of art dating from the Renaissance to the present. She will discuss the ways in which the landscape was subordinate to the holy figures in religious paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy\, where the Catholic Church was a dominant force in the world of art. Moving on to the 17th-century\, Freedman will highlight those artists in the Protestant areas of northern Europe who were pioneers in the development of a tradition of landscape painting that impacted the art of the 19th-century Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. She will then discuss the Cubist and Expressionist artists of the early 20th-century\, who found radical new ways of engaging with the natural world as they explored alternatives to naturalistic representation. Finally\, Freedman will consider those Earth artists whose monumental outdoor projects brought attention to the environmental movement of the late 20th century. She will conclude with an homage to a number of contemporary artists – such as Olafur Eliasson and Maya Lin – who are using their art to alert us to the devastating effects of climate change upon our earth. \nThe Address: Earth Exhibition will be on view through December 4\, 2022. The gallery will be open before and after the gallery talk and during regular gallery hours: Tues-Fri\, noon to 4 p.m.\, and Sat-Sun\, 1 to 4 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – JOSEPHINE HALVORSON\, PAINTER: Lecture at 11 a.m. in the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144. Free & Open to the Public. Limited Seating Available. RSVP required. \nJosephine Halvorson makes art that foregrounds firsthand experience and takes the form of painting\, sculpture\, and printmaking. Born in Brewster\, Massachusetts\, she received her BFA at The Cooper Union and her MFA at Columbia University\, with additional studies at Yale Norfolk. She is Professor of Art and Chair of Graduate Studies in Painting at Boston University and lives in western Massachusetts. \nIn 2021\, Josephine was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. She is also the recipient of international residencies and fellowships\, including the U.S. Fulbright to Vienna\, Austria\, and the Harriet Hale Woolley at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris\, France. In 2014-15\, she was the first American pensionnaire at the French Academy in Rome at the Villa Medici. \nJosephine’s work has been exhibited internationally and is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co.\, NY\, and Peter Freeman\, Paris. Selected recent exhibitions include: Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art\, North Carolina; Storm King Art Center\, New York; Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston\, Foster Prize Exhibition; and Ríos Intermitentes\, a group exhibition part of the 2019 Havana Biennial. In 2021-22 she had a solo exhibition at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe\, NM\, where she was the inaugural artist in residence. Halvorson’s work and practice have been written about extensively\, and she is a subject of Art21’s documentary series New York Close Up.

DESCRIPTION:FILM SCREENING & ARTIST TALK WITH ADDRESS: EARTH ARTIST\, ROSALIND SCHNEIDER: As part of the exhibition\, Address: Earth in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\, artist\, and filmmaker Rosalind Schneider will present a screening of her film\, “Pond Reflections\,” and discuss her work from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event will take place in Choir Room 108 at the Visual & Performing Arts Center. \n“Pond Reflections” is footage collected over three years of seasonal reflections on water as the primal source of creation. Surrounding trees\, rocks\, and landscape trace the cycle of life. Peter Rubin\, a recent graduate of the Berklee School of Music composed the film score and may also participate in the discussion. \nRosalind Schneider creates works that transcend their source to form a new reference to a visionary landscape. She creates layered landscape images with multiple realities that progress from the real into abstraction and a fusion of the two. Her Digital Fusion paintings result from the capture of a video frame as a starting point and are realized through hands-on manipulation. The surfaces are transformed by drawing\, acrylic\, and glass particle collage resulting in a luminous translation that speaks to its moving image origin. Multiple realities are birthed from video. Schneider was the first artist to show the film as an art at the Hirshhorn Museum\, following a solo show of her films at the Whitney Museum. Exhibitions of film\, video\, digital prints\, and paintings include the Bronx Museum of the Arts\, Islip Museum\, Chelsea Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, SculptureCenter\, and MOMA (Carte Blanche: Women Writing the Language of Cinema). Her 16mm films are currently being restored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will be part of the film archive at the Academy Museum. \nMore of Schneider’s work is on view in the exhibition\, Address: Earth\, from October 13 through December 4\, 2022. DESCRIPTION:2022 MFA THESIS EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION; ART ALUMNI NIGHT: Live and in person! From 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center. Free and open to the public. Co-sponsored by the Department of Art and the Alumni Association \nThe Master of Fine Arts is the terminal degree for practicing\, professional artists. The MFA Thesis Exhibition is the capstone experience of the graduate program\, demonstrating a personal direction and mastery in the work of the artists. Graduate candidates presenting their thesis work this year are: \nJanelle Chandler is an illustrator based in New Haven County\, CT. In 2019\, she earned a BA in Illustration from Western Connecticut State University\, where she is currently pursuing her MFA in Illustration. She is also enrolled in the Society of Botanical Artists Distance Diploma Program\, United Kingdom. Inspired by the beauty of nature and botanicals\, she translates her subjects onto paper\, working primarily with colored pencils and watercolor. In her artist statement\, she writes\, “In nature\, we have the opportunity to experience any color imaginable\, and there is never a shortage of shapes\, textures\, compositions\, and even mathematical formulas”. Janelle is a member of several artist organizations\, including American Woman Artists\, American Botanical Society of Artists\, and Colored Pencil Society of America. In 2020\, her work was selected for an international juried exhibition at the Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick\, England. \nKelsey Gilmore is from Northport\, NY\, and currently resides in Bethel\, CT. Her artistic practice includes paintings\, works on paper\, and prints. She received her BBA in Marketing from Iona College in 2017\, and worked in management for a design company and product development with a shoe designer. She is now pursuing her MFA in Painting at Western Connecticut State University. Working from observation and memory\, she explores the convergence of figuration and abstraction while hinting at themes of nature. Her paintings encompass a wide range in scale\, from 8 x 10 inches to 6 x 8 feet. In her artist statement\, Kelsey writes\, “I am interested in the connection that exists between myself\, nature\, and the unknown essence from which we both came from; the tiny miraculous moments that happen while present in everyday life. My work reflects the awareness that is mirrored within us through light\, shapes\, and shadows existing in the natural world. . .There is a collaboration between myself and the material\, a growing relationship that ebbs and flows until we both become one.” \nDon Houston grew up in Tampa\, Florida\, and has lived in New Haven County\, CT since 2011. He attended a summer program at Ringling School of Art and received his BS from SUNY Maritime College in Bronx\, NY\, in 2009. For two years\, he worked on ships\, one doing runs from Houston to LA through the Panama Canal; the other from the Far East to the Middle East. While working on the ships\, he was greatly influenced by the isolation and indifference of the ocean. After moving to CT\, he re-discovered his love of painting and attended classes at Parsons School of Design. He is now pursuing his MFA in Painting at WCSU. He writes in his artist statement\, “The act of painting for me is a voyage. I don’t always know where it will take me\, and navigating from blank canvas to completed work can be a stormy\, emotional journey. I have some basic outline\, some goal I want to achieve in the painting; as long as I am playing with light and color\, the canvas can get as deep as the oceans I often paint.” \nRobert Charles Hudson is a resident of Bristol\, CT\, pursuing his MFA in Painting at WCSU. He received his BFA in Sculpture from UCONN and draws inspiration from his African American heritage and family traditions in quilting. His Thesis work includes a series of paintings entitled “Bowtie”\, which refers to a symbol used by slaves on their quest for freedom. In his artist statement\, Robert explains\, “When slaves headed North\, . . . they would look for symbols on quilts to show them the way. The bowtie symbol indicated the necessity to travel in disguise\, to change into clothes worn by a person of higher status to continue their escape on the Underground Railroad.” Furthermore\, he writes\, “I added a contemporary twist of color to the symbol of the Bowtie. In my opinion\, this employs a relief to such a horrific period in American History.” Robert has exhibited in solo and group shows in CT\, MA\, NY\, and Washington\, DC. His CT solo shows include Hartford Public Library\, Mattatuck Museum\, and New Britain Museum of American Art\, where his work is in its permanent collection. \nThe exhibition is on view in the gallery through April 10\, 2022.\nGallery Hours: Tuesday – Friday\, noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday\, 1 to 4 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:NO PLACE LIKE HOME: EXPLORING THE SIGHTS\, SOUNDS\, AND TASTES OF THE MIDDLE EAST WITH ARTIST MOHAMAD HAFEZ AND GUESTS: In conjunction with the Exhibition\, “Mohamad Hafez: Unsettled Nostalgia” and with the completion of the NEA supported “The Home Project” at WCSU with artist Mohamad Hafez\, the Department of Art invites the public to attend this event from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall at the Visual & Performing Arts Center. \nThe audience will spend the evening learning about Middle Eastern culture through history\, art\, film\, music\, storytelling\, and cuisine. Hafez will be joined by other guests who also focus on the traditions of the Middle East. DESCRIPTION:GALLERY OPENING: MOHAMAD HAFEZ: UNSETTLED NOSTALGIA: February 10 – March 6 \nOpening Reception:\nThursday\, Feb 10\, 2022\, 6 to 8 p.m.\nthe Gallery at the Visual & Performing Arts Center\,\nWestside Campus \nA Syrian-American artist and architect\, Mohamad Hafez was born in Damascus\, raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\, and educated in the Midwestern United States. Expressing the juxtaposition of East and West within him\, Hafez’s art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using his architectural skills\, Hafez creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in their appearance yet politically charged in their content which addresses the devastation of war\, feelings of displacement\, and nostalgia for home. \nThe Department of Art was awarded a $13\,000 National Endowment for the Arts “Project Grant” to support “The Home Project\,” in which Hafez will pursue an extensive program of collaborative art installations and exhibition\, student mentoring\, public lectures\, and other activities during a year-long residency in the WCSU Department of Art that will begin in August and continue through the end of the 2021-22 academic year. Through these diverse and interactive exchanges\, he will draw from his unique experiences and artistic works to challenge participants in the project to create their own artistic interpretations of the meaning and concept of home to be exhibited alongside his work in the exhibition. \nGallery Hours: Monday–Friday noon to 4 p.m.\, Saturday–Sunday 1 to 4 p.m.
