He has written about American history for The New York Times\, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. Formerly a historian at the Smithsonian Institution\, he is also the author of “The World Beneath Their Feet” and “Death in a Promised Land.” His most recent book\, “The Ground Breaking: The Tulsa Race Massacre and an American City’s Search for Justice\,” won WCSU’s 2022 Housatonic Book Award. Ellsworth lives in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, where he teaches in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. Neeves grew up in New England\, where she spent many summers lifeguarding at an idyllic lake\, and occasionally catching snapping turtles. She enjoys tea\, swimming and board games that take entire evenings to play. When she’s not writing\, she can usually be found spending time with her family at their (probably not haunted) home in Salem\, Massachusetts. “After You Vanished” is her YA debut. \nPatricia Park is a tenured professor of Creative Writing at American University\, a Fulbright Scholar in Creative Arts\, an Edith Wharton Writer-in-Residence\, and a Jerome Hill Artist Fellow. She is the author of the YA novel\, “Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim” and the adult novel\, “Re Jane\,” a retelling of Jane Eyre named New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice\, winner of an American Library Association Award\, an NPR Fresh Air pick\, and others. She’s written for the New York Times\, New Yorker\, Guardian\, and others. Her new YA novel\, “What’s Eating Jackie Oh?” is forthcoming in April 2024. This event will be hosted by WCSU’s M.F.A. in Creative and Professional Writing program will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Room 218 of the Westside Classroom Building. \nJill McDonough’s books of poems include “Habeas Corpus” (Salt\, 2008)\, “Where You Live” (Salt\, 2012)\, “Reaper” (Alice James\, 2017). and “Here All Night” (Alice James\, 2019). The recipient of three Pushcart prizes and fellowships from the Lannan Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Fine Arts Work Center\, the New York Public Library\, the Library of Congress\, and Stanford’s Stegner program\, she taught incarcerated college students through Boston University’s Prison Education Program for 13 years. Her work has appeared in Poetry\, Slate\, The Nation\, The Threepenny Review and Best American Poetry. She teaches in the M.F.A. program at UMass-Boston and offers College Reading and Writing in Boston jails. Her sixth poetry collection\, “American Treasure\,” won WCSU’s 2023 Housatonic Book Award. DESCRIPTION:MFA WINTER RESIDENCY – SARAH DARER LITTMAN AND NORA RALEIGH BASKIN: Writers Nora Raleigh Baskin and Sarah Darer Littman aren’t afraid to tackle difficult —and sometimes controversial —topics. What are the author’s responsibilities to their audience when writing about these subjects? And what responsibility do authors have to themselves when researching and writing about topics that have painful personal resonance? \nNora Raleigh Baskin is a creative writing teacher and the author of fifteen novels for young readers\, as well as several personal narrative essays\, and a work-in-progress novel of literary fiction for adult readers (The Story of You). Her YA novel\, Nine\, Ten: A September 11 Story\, is a “tense…and thought-provoking” (Kirkus Review\, starred review) look at the days leading up to the tragic events of September 11\, 2001\, and how that day impacted the lives of four middle schoolers. \nSarah Darer Littman is the critically acclaimed author of 19 middle grade and young adult novels\, including Backlash (Winner of the Iowa Teen Book Award and the Grand Canyon Reader Award) and Confessions of a Closet Catholic\, winner of the Sydney Taylor Book Award. Her most recent book\, Some Kind of Hate\, was released in November 2022. As well as writing novels\, Sarah teaches in the MFA program at WCSU and at the Yale Writers’ Workshop. She is also an award-winning columnist. \nAll evening residency events are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:VETERAN’S DAY BOOK LAUNCH: WCSU’s MFA in Creative and Professional Writing is co-sponsoring a Veteran’s Day celebration at Byrd’s Books in Bethel from 7 to 8 p.m. The event will feature Ron Farina\, an MFA graduate\, who recently published his third book\, OUT OF THE SHADOWS. \nAbout the book: \nThe stories of nine remarkable American women soldiers wounded while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Based on hours of personal interviews\, Out of the Shadows: Voices of American Women Soldiers pieces together the unique lives of these women who served side by side with their male counterparts in war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan. \nAbout the author: \nRon Farina is author of three books\, including most recently “Out of the Shadows Voices of American Women Soldiers\,” “Who Will Have My Back” and “At the Altar of the Past.” Other works include: “Unsung Heroes\,” “Keeping Promises” and “Worn Torn\,” personal essays about the human cost of war. In 2021 he was awarded the AWP Intro Award for Fiction and the Society of Professional Journalists\, Connecticut Chapter first place award for General Column Magazine writing. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two Golden Retrievers\, Henry and Preacher. \nHe holds an MFA from Western Connecticut State University. He served in Vietnam in 1966-67.
