DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER: Are you expecting? Are you a new parent? Do you have small children in your family? \nThe Danbury Library is throwing a community baby shower! Meet organizations that serve babies and families with young children to set your little ones up for childhood success. New parents can expect prenatal and postpartum health resources\, breastfeeding information\, childhood success techniques and tips\, meet other new parents in the community\, and door prizes! \nAll are welcome to attend and meet our partners. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Danbury Public Library. We have a Dads Read Storytime at 11:30 a.m. for big siblings. The first 50 registrants will receive an early literacy tote bag from the Friends of the Danbury Library. (Bags are for babies ages 0 – 18 months.) DESCRIPTION:AFFILIATED EVENT: OPERA IN THE BAROQUE PERIOD: Opera is a distinct creation of the baroque period around the early 17th century. With elaborate sets\, costumes\, lighting\, acting\, dancing and singing\, it has remained one of the most ambitious genres in the standard canon of western art music. Join Dr. Gilad Harel\, musicologist and music theorist\, at 6 p.m. in the Farioly Program Room to explore operas by early innovators including Claudio Monteverdi\, Henry Purcell\, and George Frideric Handel. In these examples\, we will see heroes from mythology and ancient history realized in the form of a traditional baroque opera\, an “opera seria.” \nRegistration required. Virtual option available.

SUMMARY:Danbury's Castle: The Hearthstone
DESCRIPTION:DANBURY’S CASTLE: ARCHITECT E.G.W. DIETRICH AND HIS DESIGN OF THE HEARTHSTONE: For the past 10 years\, Christopher Jend has researched architect E. G. W. Dietrich (1875-1924) documenting nearly 450 of his designs. In this presentation\, Jend will discuss Dietrich’s body of work from eye-catching shingle style designs to his contributions to the arts and crafts style and place in context Dietrich’s design of the local Danbury landmark “the Hearthstone.” Constructed between 1895-99 for successful portrait photographer E. Starr Sanford\, this remarkable castle-like structure is composed of local stone quarried on the site. Exhibiting historic Norman as well as Shingle Style and Arts and Crafts elements\, this unique home served as a private residence until it was purchased by the City of Danbury in 1985. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, the house and outbuildings suffered from neglect\, yet the stone walls still stand evoking romantic ideas of architecture and place. \nAttend in-person or by Zoom at 6 p.m..
