SUMMARY:HSIs and the Role of the Title V Coordinator
DESCRIPTION:HSI-PLC SESSION – HSIs AND THE ROLE OF THE TITLE V COORDINATOR: The HSI-PLC is a monthly online community dedicated to shared learning and engagement around Dr. Gina Garcia’s framework of Latino Servingness. This framework is of critical importance to CT State Community College as we strive to become a system that more fully supports Latine students — and\, by extension\, all students — in reaching college completion. \nThe HSI-PLC grew out of CT State’s HSI Retreat held in February 2025\, which convened 125 colleagues from across the state to share best practices and deepen their theoretical and conceptual understanding of HSI work. The PLC is also a Leadership Development Project of Dr. Madeline Pérez De Jesús and Dr. Manuel Gómez as part of their year-long 2025–2026 Fellowships with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) which concludes in June. \nMay 8 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.\nHSIs and the Role of the Title V Coordinator\nAriel Robinson and Rachael DiPietro\nCT State Capital and CT State Norwalk \n  \nJoin the meeting at https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/launcher.html?url=%2F_%23%2Fl%2Fmeetup-join%2F19%3Ameeting_MDViNDZlODUtYmM2Mi00NDcwLTgyMTgtYzg5ZWNhMDQ0MjFj%40thread.v2%2F0%3Fcontext%3D%257b%2522Tid%2522%253a%2522679df878-277a-496a-ac8d-d99e58606dd9%2522%252c%2522Oid%2522%253a%25223fe3a803-b972-4433-ba08-6d83c5e9c9ec%2522%257d%26anon%3Dtrue&type=meetup-join&deeplinkId=4bf4f16a-4a4a-492d-86d0-72b6c4b611e1&directDl=true&msLaunch=true&enableMobilePage=true&suppressPrompt=true \nMeeting ID: 282 702 492 668 8\nPasscode: 2JY3Zg3B

SUMMARY:“Half-Jew\, Full Life” Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:‘HALF-JEW\, FULL LIFE’ BOOK TALK: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nFrom Berlin to the Bronx\, from Holocaust survivor to American success story\, Georgette Bennett’s new book\, “Half-Jew\, Full Life\,” traces the extraordinary life of Gary “Pips” Phillips who defied the odds at every turn. With an Aryan mother and Jewish father\, Pips could have escaped much of the Holocaust’s horrors. Instead\, he made a fateful decision at age 13 to become a Bar Mitzvah just as the Nuremberg Laws were enacted\, effectively choosing to be labeled a Jew under Nazi rule. Pips’ wartime experience is marked by daring escapes\, improbable rescues\, and survival while hiding deep within Nazi Berlin. Captured four times\, he escaped thrice\, choosing to remain in Nazi custody the fourth time as there was nowhere to run in bombed-out Berlin. At his place of confinement\, he met his future wife\, Olga Horvath\, who had been imprisoned after surviving Auschwitz and the Death March to Bergen Belsen. After their marriage in chaotic post-war Berlin\, they emigrated to the U.S. to start a new life. \nArriving in New York with nothing\, Pips rose from waiter to co-owner of the world’s largest photo agency — despite never owning a camera. Unlike Pips\, Olga was unable to escape the shadow of her Holocaust experiences\, and in a horrifying twist\, she threw herself off the roof of their gleaming luxury high-rise after more than 50 years of marriage\, leaving Pips grief-stricken\, but also able to reinvent himself one more time. This dramatic story brims with chance\, love\, loss\, resilience\, and reinvention\, culminating in a poignant exploration of Jewish identity\, memory\, and legacy. \nBennet will be in conversation with best-selling author Richard Walter. \nThis virtual event is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Register at https://mjhnyc.org/events/halfjewfulllife/

SUMMARY:Yiddish Theater\, George Gershwin\, and the Birth of an American Sound
DESCRIPTION:YIDDISH THEATER\, GEORGE GERSHWIN\, AND THE BIRTH OF AN AMERICAN SOUND: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion is promoting this virtual event. \nAs a teenager\, George Gershwin attended Yiddish theater regularly. “Khantshe in Amerike\,” by family friend Joseph Rumshinsky\, featured a working-class woman asserting her rights and her desires. But\, not only did the show include a Suffragette Parade — it has also been described as the first Yiddish musical to incorporate American rhythm. This lecture by scholar Ronald Robboy will explore the idea that Gershwin’s internalization of Black Americans’ music was influenced by his early immersion in Yiddish theater. \nRonald Robboy is a musician and independent scholar based in San Diego\, where he was a professional cellist for many years and\, beginning in the 1970s\, an early West Coast experimentalist in the klezmer revival. He has written and lectured extensively on Yiddish theater music\, and in 1998 was named Senior Researcher for Michael Tilson Thomas’s Thomashefsky Project. Robboy is leading YIVO Institute’s reconstruction of the score to composer Joseph Rumshinsky’s operetta Khantshe in Amerike (1912)\, to be performed in New York at the Center for Jewish History in May 2026. \nThis virtual event is from 1 to 2 p.m. Register at https://yivo.org/George-Gershwin

SUMMARY:Leadership Reflections through a Latino Servingness Lens
DESCRIPTION:HSI-PLC SESSION – LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS THROUGH A LATINO SERVINGNESS LENS: The HSI-PLC is a monthly online community dedicated to shared learning and engagement around Dr. Manuel Gómez as part of their year-long 2025–26 Fellowships with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) which concludes in June. \nApril 10 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.\nLeadership Reflections Through an HSI Lens\nDr. Ruben Barato\, Vice President of Student Affairs\nHudson Valley Community College \nJoin the meeting at https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/launcher.html?url=%2F_%23%2Fl%2Fmeetup-join%2F19%3Ameeting_MDViNDZlODUtYmM2Mi00NDcwLTgyMTgtYzg5ZWNhMDQ0MjFj%40thread.v2%2F0%3Fcontext%3D%257b%2522Tid%2522%253a%2522679df878-277a-496a-ac8d-d99e58606dd9%2522%252c%2522Oid%2522%253a%25223fe3a803-b972-4433-ba08-6d83c5e9c9ec%2522%257d%26anon%3Dtrue&type=meetup-join&deeplinkId=4bf4f16a-4a4a-492d-86d0-72b6c4b611e1&directDl=true&msLaunch=true&enableMobilePage=true&suppressPrompt=true\nMeeting ID: 282 702 492 668 8\nPasscode: 2JY3Zg3B

SUMMARY:Mojos\, Mermaids\, Medicine\, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic
DESCRIPTION:MOJOS\, MERMAIDS\, MEDICINE\, AND 400 YEARS OF BLACK WOMEN’S MAGIC: The Office of Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion is promoting this virtual event from the Danbury Library. \nFeminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book\, “The Conjuring of America: Mojos\, Mermaids\, Medicine\, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic\,” tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women\, in secrecy and subterfuge\, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. \nConjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary — from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix\, to the original magic of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” (2023)\, and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. \nFrom the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores\, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now\, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history\, sourcing letters from the enslaved\, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used\, their herbs\, food\, textiles\, song\, and dance\, used to sow rebellion\, freedom\, and hope. \nJoin us to take part in the magic and celebrate the legacy of America’s founding Black women. Register for free today at https://libraryc.org/danburylibrary/107155/register \nAbout the Author: Lindsey Stewart is a Black feminist philosopher and an Associate Professor of philosophy at the University of Memphis. She is the author of The Politics of Black Joy. Her work has been featured in Blavity\, Signs\, Hypatia\, and the British Journal for the History of Philosophy\, and she holds a 2021 Michael Beaney Prize. She lives in Memphis\, Tennessee.
