Free and open to the public; limited seating available- RSVP required at www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-judy-glantzman-interdisciplinary-artist-tickets-851131576457. \nJudy Glantzman is an interdisciplinary artist and a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. Exhibiting since 1983\, she first received critical attention for early shows in the East Village at Civilian Warfare and Gracie Mansion\, then later with Blum Helman and Hirschl & Adler Modern. Since 2006\, she has been represented by the Betty Cuningham Gallery. She has taught at RISD\, New York Studio School\, MICA\, and Purchase College. In 2018\, she was Artist in Residence at Dartmouth College. \nGlantzman’s work has been shown and reviewed throughout the U.S. and internationally in Germany\, Italy\, the Netherlands\, and Canada. She was honored by The Dactyl Foundation in NYC with a thirty-year retrospective in 2009. Her 2019 solo show at Betty Cuningham Gallery was a forty-year retrospective\, which inspired a public interview with art historian Jennifer Samet\, later published in Hyperallergic. \nGlantzman’s numerous awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship; two NY Foundation for the Arts grants; a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant; Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation grant; and a NY Artist Space Exhibition grant. In 2018\, she was elected to the National Academy of Design. Her works are in many private and public collections\, including the Whitney Museum of American Art; Phoenix Art Museum; Tampa Museum of Art; Weatherspoon Art Museum; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

DESCRIPTION:ART FACULTY LECTURE SERIES – “WHAT IS CREATIVITY? THEORY AND APPLICATION OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS” CREATIVITY WORKSHOP WITH FRANCIS PATNAUDE: At 6:30 p.m. in Room 144 of the Visual & Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus. Free and open to the public; limited seating available. \nWCSU Adjunct Professor of Art Francis T. Patnaude attended Southern Connecticut State University\, earning a B.S. in Art Education in 1975. He earned a B.F.A. in Studio Arts From Northern Kentucky University in 1978 and an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Syracuse University in 1982. Patnaude also earned a certificate in welding\, completing a full Welder Certification program at Northern Kentucky Vocational/Technical School in Covington\, Kentucky. He served as studio assistant at Studio 70 under the direction of Michael Skop\, sculptor\, and studied photography under John Daido Loori. After working for five years as an art/welder/fabricator for various artists\, Patnaude has been teaching art at Rumsey Hall School in Washington\, Connecticut\, since 1988. In addition to teaching color and design at WCSU\, he is also developing training methodologies and workshops in the area of creativity. Patnaude’s artwork consists of fabricated and cast metal sculpture\, collage\, video\, and spatial/environmental music compositions. \n“It is said that the function of the Zen Arts is to simply directly point to the true nature of reality. I believe that all art produced by human beings\, east and west\, past and present that truly nourishes the spirit and works with life as it’s media\, reflects this attitude. It is this awakened orientation combined with a methodology rooted in this awareness that finds its highest level of completion with the interweaving of society. How we as a people on this great earth honor our individual nature and yet realize that our world community is the base upon which this miraculous uniqueness rests\, is a question we must take up. Our survival depends on it. Art done with a foundation of spirit offers the opportunity to not only be a visionary guiding light\, but also a practice which directly manifest this insight. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE WITH HANGAMA AMIRI\, INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST: At 11 a.m. in Room 144 of the Visual & Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. Free and open to the public; limited seating available. \nHangama Amiri is an Afghan-Canadian artist who lives in New Haven\,  where she earned her M.F.A. from Yale University in 2020. She received her B.F.A. from NSCAD University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, and was a Canadian Fulbright and Post-Graduate Fellow at Yale’s School of Art and Sciences in 2015-16. \nAmiri combines painting and printmaking with textiles\, sewing together stories based on memories of her homeland. “I’m pinning and sewing my identity\,” she recently said. In 1996\, when she was seven years old\, she and her family fled Kabul. Moving through numerous countries over several years\, they immigrated to Canada in 2005 when she was a teenager. Her works examine notions of home; how gender\, social norms\, and geopolitical conflicts impact the daily lives of women in Afghanistan and the diaspora. \nAmiri’s 2023 exhibitions include: “A Homage to Home” at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield (reviewed in the New York Times)\, and “Thinking Historically in the Present” at Sharjah Biennial 15\, United Arab Emirates. Since 2020\, her work has been shown nationally and internationally\, in solo exhibits in Denver\, NYC\, Toronto\, London and Rome. In 2024\, her work will be exhibited at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art\, a traveling show from the Aldrich with a published catalog.

DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE\, WILL HUTNICK\, ARTIST/CURATOR: 11 a.m.\, Visual & Performing Arts Center\, Room 144\, WCSU Westside campus. Free and open to the public\, but limited seating available. \nWill Hutnick is an artist and curator based in Wassaic\, New York. He received his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 2011 and his B.A. from Providence College in 2007. He is a 2021 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Painting\, and a recipient of grants from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation in 2017 and Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2016. \nHutnick’s work has been in solo exhibitions at Pamela Salisbury Gallery\, Elijah Wheat Showroom\, Standard Space\, Providence College Galleries\, One River School\, The Java Project\, and St. Thomas Aquinas College. Group exhibitions include: Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art\, Hollis Taggart\, Heaven Gallery and Geary Contemporary. \nHutnick has been awarded numerous artist-in-residencies\, including Yaddo\, Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency\, Vermont Studio Center\, Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences\, and others. He has also been a curator-in-residence at Benaco Arte and at Trestle Projects\, and has curated exhibitions at SPRING/BREAK Art Show\, Pratt Institute\, and Wassaic Project\, among others. \nFrom 2015 – 2020\, Hutnick was one of the co-directors of Ortega y Gasset Projects\, an artist-run curatorial collective and exhibition space in Brooklyn. He is currently the Director of Artistic Programming at the Wassaic Project\, a nonprofit organization that uses art and art education to foster positive social change.

SUMMARY:Arts Technology Workshops
DESCRIPTION:SUMMER 2023 ARTS TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS: The Summer 2023 Arts Technology Workshops are open to all rising high school freshman through seniors who are interested in arts technology. \nThe arts industries are rapidly evolving; implementing new technologies and softwares that are changing the landscape of what it means to be an artist and technician. This two-day\, educational experience offers students the opportunity to learn cutting edge arts technology that will expose them to new means of creation\, and open doors to new pathways in the arts. The Arts Workshops begin at an introductory level and equips students with a unique and advanced skillset in their area. In addition to learning skills in the various forms of arts technology\, students will also get a real look at what it’s like to be a college student in the visual and performing arts. \nWCSU will provide all technology needed. The only thing the participant needs to bring is their smartphone (and charger!). Lunch will be provided on both days of the workshops. There is a $35.00 registration fee. Registration opens March 15. There are a limited number of spots available for each workshop. \nAll workshops take place in the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Western Connecticut State University\, located at 43 Lake Avenue Extension\, Danbury\, CT. This stunning\, new facility offers top-of-the-line arts technology\, with equipment and software outmatching most professional arts venues. \n\nAbout the Workshops\nThe student may select one of the three workshops to participate in during the weekend. \nMusic Production – SOLD OUT\nStudents will be introduced to professional-level software\, hardware\, and production techniques to use in the creation of their own original music. Students will work with skilled instructors in the Recording Studio\, Music Technology Lab\, and suite of Audio Production Practice Rooms. Following brief exposition modules on audio fundamentals\, sound design\, composition\, and software use\, students will have the opportunity to produce original music using our state-of-the-art technologies and audio resources. \nStop Motion\nStudents will be introduced to stop-motion animation through historical reviews\, scene photography and building of their own zoetrope\, one of the earliest forms of stop-motion animation. Using available software the zoetrope photos will be compiled into a final movie form. \nTheatre Stage & Sound Technology\nExplore scenic and sound design for theatrical productions using industry standard software including Vectorworks\, Sketch Up and Qlab.  Students will create a visual and aural landscape from scratch and explore how scenery and sound work together to create the environment of a theatre production. \n\nSchedule\nEach day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m. Lunch will be provided from noon to 1:00 PM.
