Reserve tickets at www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-glenn-goldberg-painter-tickets-1980476598820 \nGlenn Goldberg is a NYC artist and musician who was born in Bronx\, New York. He studied at the New York Studio School and earned his B.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Queens College\, CUNY. He has taught at Cooper Union\, New York Studio School\, and Queens College\, where he was Professor and Chair of Graduate Studio Art. He also has been a panelist and visiting artist for numerous M.F.A. painting programs in the U.S. In June of this summer\, he will teach at Umbria Contemporary Arts in Italy\, a new art center and school in the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio. \nA recipient of many awards\, Goldberg has received grants from the Edward Albee Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, Sharpe-Walentas\, Urban Glass\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times\, LA Times\, New Yorker\, and Chicago Tribune\, among others. In “Hyperallergic\,” art historian Jennifer Samet described his paintings as “ethereal\,” as a “meeting point of the ordinary and the other.” \nGoldberg is a member of The National Academy of Design and is currently represented by Chris Sharp in Los Angeles and The Approach in London. He has shown extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe\, with work in many museum collections\, including: the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Guggenheim Museum; the Brooklyn Museum; the National Gallery of Art; and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles.

He received his B.A. from Kenyon College and his M.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has been shown throughout the U.S. and in Germany\, Norway\, Russia\, and France. \nRecent solo exhibitions of his sculptures\, videos\, performances\, and works on paper have been held at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain; at Municipal Bonds gallery in San Francisco; at Planthouse gallery in Manhattan; and at Jennifer Terzian Gallery in Litchfield. An exhibition of his Folded Palladiums will open at Municipal Bonds in March 2026. Recent awards and artist-in-residencies include Tusen Takk\, The Arctic Circle Residency\, and The Bauhaus Residency. \nHorstman has curated exhibitions across Europe and the U.S.\, including “Anni Albers: In Thread and On Paper\,” a traveling show most recently at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin\, Texas. He also curated “Becoming Trees” at Concord Art in Concord\, Massachusetts. As Education Director at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation\, he is the author of “Interacting with Color: A Practical Guide to Josef Albers’s Color Experiments\,” published by Yale University Press in 2024. Register at www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-rudy-gutierrez-illustrator-tickets-1980203990441 \nRudy Gutierrez is an award-winning American illustrator and educator born in Bronx\, New York\, of Puerto Rican heritage. He has created artworks for films and performances\, U.S. Postage stamps\, book covers\, posters\, picture books\, and LP / CD covers. His artwork for Santana’s hit album “Shaman” was used as a set design at the 2002 Super Bowl half-time show\, and his paintings were commissioned for the film “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary.” \nIn 2019\, Gutierrez’s paintings were featured as the Curatorial Spotlight at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa\, Arizona. His work was shown at the Norman Rockwell Museum as part of the Unity Project Exhibition 2020\, an initiative of the museum dedicated to an inclusive America. He was also included in “Imprinted: Illustrating Race” in 2022 and 2025 at the Delaware Art Museum. The work will also be on exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis\, Tennessee\, in 2026. “Imprinted” explores how the printed image has both challenged and reinforced cultural stereotypes in the United States. \nGutierrez’s art is in many public and private collections\, including those of musical icons Carlos Santana\, Clive Davis\, and Wayne Shorter. His awards include Dean Cornwell Recognition Award; Distinguished Educator in the Arts Award; Society of Illustrators Gold Medal; Caldecott Honor Award; Africana Book Award; and Pura Belpre Award for his children’s books. In October 2025\, Gutierrez was inducted into the prestigious Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. He is a Professor Emeritus at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, New York\, and has lectured at various institutions internationally.

She works primarily in painting\, but also in sculpture and printmaking. She received her B.F.A. at The Cooper Union and her M.F.A. at Columbia University\, with additional studies at Yale Norfolk. Since 2016\, she has been Professor of Art and Chair of Graduate Studies in Painting at Boston University. \nIn 2021\, Halvorson was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. She is also the recipient of international residencies and fellowships\, including the U.S. Fulbright to Vienna\, Austria\, and the Harriet Hale Woolley Award at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris\, France. In 2014-15\, she was the first American “pensionnaire” at the French Academy in Rome at the Villa Medici. \nHalvorson’s work has been exhibited internationally and is represented by Sikkema Malloy Jenkins\, NY\, and Peter Freeman\, Paris. Selected recent exhibitions include: Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art\, North Carolina; Storm King Art Center\, New York; Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston\, and the 2019 Havana Biennial. In 2021-22\, she had a solo exhibition at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe\, NM\, where she was the inaugural artist in residence. Halvorson’s work and practice have been written about extensively\, and she is a subject of Art21’s documentary series New York Close Up.

She is an alumna of WCSU\, graduating Summa Cum Laude in the Kathwari Honors Program with a B.A. degree in Studio Art. Since 2018\, she has created work across a range of mediums\, exploring the awkward\, tender\, and often absurd dimensions of human psychology and relationships through dark humor and surreal\, hand-crafted visuals. \nHart’s short film “Bug Diner” received the Jury Award for Animation at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It also received a Special Jury Award at SXSW and premiered internationally on MUBI in 2025. Her first short film\, “JamieSonShine\,” is an experimental mixed-media documentary exploring her relationship with her brother following his diagnosis of schizophrenia. It screened at Slamdance 2022 and won Director’s Choice at the Thomas Edison Film Festival. \nHart earned her M.F.A. in Experimental Animation from CalArts in 2023. She was awarded a post-graduate Teaching Fellowship for her proposed course Compositing in Claymation\, which she taught at CalArts in 2024. She continues to create both personal films and freelance work for studios\, including Little Monster Films\, BentoBox\, Stoopid Buddy Stoodios\, and Bix Pix Entertainment. She takes puppets very\, very seriously.

His works are assembled forms of painting\, drawing and sculpture that examine the roles of landscape and nature in contemporary culture. He received a B.F.A. in painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 1985 and also studied in Rome through RISD’s European Honors Program. He received his M.F.A. in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993. \nBartel was a 1990 recipient of the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship (U.S. Department of Education\, Washington\, D.C.). In 2000\, he was awarded a Connecticut Council on the Arts Fellowship Grant in support of the continuation of his related drawing series entitled\, “Garden Studies” and “Terra Reverentia”. His work has been exhibited at Palo Alto Art Center\, Brockton Art Museum\, and Katonah Museum of Art\, among others. \nA passionate teacher\, Bartel has taught at Brown University\, Carnegie Mellon University\, Manhattanville College\, and Vermont College. He has been a guest critic at Rhode Island School of Design and has lectured at Alfred University\, Chatham College\, and The New England Teaching Conference. Currently\, Bartel teaches drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, installation art\, and conceptual art at the Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts. He is the founder of IS (Installation Space)\, a proposal-based installation gallery\, as well as the founder and Gallery Director of the Cambridge School’s Thompson Gallery\, a teaching gallery dedicated to thematic inquiry.

His works are funny\, acrobatic feats of mental agility that challenge the laws of logic. His characters retain composure no matter what; impending doom does not unnerve them; and under the dark humor\, optimism prevails. In 2015\, Billout received the highest honor; he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. \nBillout was born and educated in France and moved to Paris in the 1960s to work in advertising graphic design. He came to the U.S. in 1969 as an inexperienced illustrator with an improvised\, unique portfolio\, presented to Milton Glaser at New York magazine. Glaser loved his work and published it in its entirety. \nFor 24 years\, Billout created a stand-alone page in The Atlantic magazine\, in full color\, with total editorial freedom. From 2001 to 2011\, he illustrated articles in The New Yorker magazine by Seymour Hersh on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His client list includes Esquire\, Rolling Stone\, Time\, Newsweek\, The Washington Post\, and The New York Times\, among others. He is the recipient of many awards\, among them the Hamilton King Award and The New York Times “Ten Best Illustrated Children’s Books” for five years. At his Hall of Fame induction\, Billout was described as “more than an illustrator\, a compassionate poet of the absurd.”

Group exhibitions include: Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art\, High Noon\, Hollis Taggart\, 1969 Gallery\, and Heaven Gallery. \nHutnick has been awarded artist-in-residencies at Yaddo\, Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency\, Vermont Studio Center\, and others. He has also been a curator-in-residence at Benaco Arte and Trestle Projects\, and has curated exhibitions at SPRING/BREAK Art Show\, Pratt Institute\, and the Wassaic Project. From 2015 to 2020\, Hutnick was one of the co-directors of Ortega y Gasset Projects\, an artist-run collective and exhibition space in Brooklyn. DESCRIPTION:MFA FACULTY LECTURE – AMBER SCOON\, INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST:\nMon\, April 7\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\, WCSU\, Westside campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nAmber Scoon makes art\, books\, and events. She is Assistant Professor of Art and Borgia Gallery Director at Elms College in Chicopee\, Massachusetts\, and also teaches Graduate Studies in Art History at WCSU. She is the John Berger Fellow at the European Graduate School\, where she received her Ph.D. in Philosophy\, Art\, and Critical Thought. She received her M.F.A. from American University’s two-year program in Italy and her Bachelor of Science from New York University. \nDuring the pandemic\, Scoon studied Sustainable Cultural Heritage at American University in Rome\, Italy\, working on a project\, “Revive the Spirit of Mosul.” She was the Goetemann Distinguished Artist in 2022 at the Rocky Neck Artist Colony in Gloucester\, Massachusetts. She has lectured at the Cape Ann Museum and was a visiting artist lecturer at Mount Gretna School of Art. For several years\, Scoon and artist Glenn Goldberg have been collaborating under the name Snow Drift. They received a 2022-23 Faculty Fellowship through Social Practice CUNY\, and intend to co-author the second edition of “Question Mark\,” published by Atropos Press. \nMost recently\, Scoon received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to curate an exhibition celebrating diverse cultural heritage. Her sculpture\, painting\, and performance work have been shown in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and the U.S.\, most recently at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, and the Painting Center in NYC. She is the recipient of many residencies abroad\, including Africa\, Netherlands\, Spain\, India\, and China\, where time spent in cultures of storytelling and dance informs her work. \nIn 1994 McNutt was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study and work in West and Central Africa. She also received an Eastman Foundation Grant for her documentary work in West Africa\, with sojourns in Ivory Coast and Cameroon. \nIn 2018\, 2019\, and this year\, she has been a guest artist at Taoxichuan International Artists Studio in China\, with her work in their permanent collection. \nOther awards include a New York Foundation for the Arts Fiscal Sponsorship\, a Rothman Grant\, a William Hillman Foundation Grant\, and the Mercedes Matter/ Ambassador Middendorf Award (NY Studio School). She was also awarded U.S. residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, the Harwood Museum in New Mexico\, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown\, Massachusetts\, and the Watershed Center for Ceramics in Maine. Born in Berrien Springs\, Michigan\, he received his B.A. degree from Hope College (Michigan) and his M.F..A degree from the University of Delaware. Since 1998\, Lee’s work has been shown throughout the U.S. in galleries and museums\, including the Neuberger Museum of Art and the Islip Art Museum. \nInternational exhibitions have been held in England\, France\, Belgium\, Germany\, and Japan. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1983 and received her M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. She lives and works in NYC and Haverford\, Pennsylvania\, where she is the Phlyssa Koshland Professor in Fine Arts at Haverford College\, where she has taught since 1997. \nLi’s work is represented by Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, and Alice Gauvin Gallery in Portland\, Maine. It has been featured in international exhibitions in the U.S.\, Switzerland\, Italy\, Ireland and France. In NYC\, she has shown with several galleries\, including Lohin Geduld\, Elizabeth Harris\, Tibor de Nagy\, and Lori Bookstein Fine Art. DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE – ERIC VELASQUEZ\, ILLUSTRATOR:\nTuesday\, April 22\, 11 a.m.\nVisual & Performing Arts Center\, room 144\,WCSU\, Westside Campus\nFree & Open to the Public\, Limited Seating Available\nRSVP Required \nEric Velasquez is an illustrator who lives and works in New York. He was born in Spanish Harlem\, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents\, and attended the High School of Art and Design. He earned his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and also studied with Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students’ League. Illustrating for over 30 years\, he teaches book illustration at FIT in NYC. \nVelasquez began his career as a freelance illustrator in 1984 and in the first 12 years\, completed over 300 book jackets and interior illustrations. These included the complete series of “Encyclopedia Brown” and “The Ghost Writers\,” among others. In 1997\, he illustrated his first picture book\, “The Piano Man” by Debbie Chocolate\, for which he won the Coretta-Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent. Many books and awards have followed. He received the NAACP Image Award in 2010 for “Our Children Can Soar\,” on which he collaborated with 12 notable illustrators of children’s literature. He also wrote and illustrated “Grandma’s Records” and “Grandma’s Gift\,” which won the 2011 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. His latest book “Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library” by Carole Boston Weatherford has gathered rave reviews and has won the 2018 Walter Award\, as well as the Golden Kite Award.

He graduated with a B.F.A. in painting from SUNY Purchase in 1986 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture that same year. His work explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration\, playing with perception to discern forms and figures within multiple\, abstracted layers. \nBurckhardt’s work has been shown in over 30 solo exhibitions and countless group shows throughout the U.S. and abroad\, including McNay Art Museum\, Hudson River Museum\, Knoxville Art Museum\, Bowdoin Museum\, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. His most recent solo show of paintings was at George Adams Gallery\, NYC\, in February 2024. Other NYC gallery shows include Tibor De Nagy\, Pierogi\, DC Moore\, and Caren Golden Fine Art\, among others\, with several shows at Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco. \nIn 2016\, he participated in the Kochi Muziris Bienalle in Kerala\, India\, with an installation piece entitled “Studio Flood.” Burckhardt is the recipient of numerous grants and awards\, including three grants from the NY Foundation for the Arts\, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant\, a Guggenheim Foundation Grant\, and two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants. He was awarded two artist in residencies at Yaddo Foundation in 2024 and 2019. He was also an artist in residence at Pepper House\, Kochi\, India\, in 2020\, as well as a resident faculty at Skowhegan in 2007. Currently\, Burckhardt teaches part-time at SUNY Purchase.

In 2020\, she received her M.F.A. in Advanced Photographic Studies from ICP-Bard College\, New York\, where she was also a recipient of the Director’s Fellowship. In her work\, Cheryl explores the idea of origin and inheritance\, which is embedded in the figure of her mother and her presence in the family photo album. She incorporates photography\, text\, video\, and printmaking in her works\, some expanding to installations. \nCheryl is the 2024 Workspace Artist-in-Residence at Penumbra Foundation\, NYC. In 2023\, she received the highest award for the 97th Annual at the Print Center\, Philadelphia. In 2022\, she was a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the National Portrait Gallery\, Smithsonian. Previously held residencies include Stoneleaf Retreat in 2023\, Center for Photography at Woodstock in 2022\, and Baxter Street at Camera Club of New York in 2021. \nCheryl’s work was exhibited last year at The Gallery at WCSU\, where she was also a panel member for an artists’ talk. Her work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. at the Museum of the City of New York\, Brooklyn Museum\, Printed Matter\, The Print Center\, International Center of Photography\, Museum of Moving Image\, National Portrait Gallery\, and Minnesota Museum of American Art. Her work has also been shown in the United Kingdom at Huxley-Parlour Gallery and Format Photo Festival. She addresses ideas of migration\, belonging\, and identity through drawing\, painting\, printmaking\, and wearable sculptures. She holds an MFA from Yale and a BFA from Pratt. In 2015\, she was awarded the Blair Dickinson Memorial Prize by the Yale School of Art. In 2023\, she received the William Aguilar Cultural Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education for her artwork and role within her communities. Currently\, she is Critic and Acting Director of Graduate Studies for Painting and Printmaking at Yale. \nMaria has been an artist in residence at Sun Valley Museum of Art\, Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, MASS MOCA\, El Museo del Barrio\, LA County Museum of Art\, Monira Foundation\, and Schneider Museum of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include the Schneider Museum of Art\, the Museum of Sonoma County\, and Goggleworks. Recent group exhibitions include Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center\, LACMA\, San Diego Mesa College\, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, where her work was featured in “We the People: The Radical Notions of Democracy”. \nMaria has created public murals in California for Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital\, Santa Rosa Junior College\, Glen Ellen\, and Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Reserve a spot here. \nEric Aho is a painter who lives and works in Saxtons River\, VT. He studied at the Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London and received a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. In 1989\, he participated in the first exchange of scholars in over thirty years between the U.S. and Cuba. He completed his graduate work at the Lahti Art Institute in Finland on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1991-92 and an American-Scandinavian Foundation grant in 1993. \nAho’s works have been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. Currently represented by DC Moore Gallery in NYC\, he has had 7 solo exhibitions there from 2009 to 2022. He has also had several museum shows\, including the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Hood Museum of Art\, and Portland Art Museum. In 2016\, the New Britain Museum of American Art presented “Eric Aho: An Unfinished Point in a Vast Surrounding\,” which comprised over 50 paintings of the French landscape exploring the path of his father’s experience in WW II. \nIn 2009\, Aho was elected to the National Academy Museum. He is a recipient of numerous grants and awards\, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant; the John Koch Award for Painting from the National Academy; and an Artist Residency at the Weir Farm National Historical Park. His works are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The New York Public Library; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; New Britain Museum of American Art; Denver Art Museum; and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, among others.

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Lecture - Gregory Manchess\, Illustrator
DESCRIPTION:VISITING ARTIST LECTURE WITH GREGORY MANCHESS\, ILLUSTRATOR: The WCSU Department of Art will host Gregory Manchess\, an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared on the covers and feature stories of National Geographic Magazine\, Time\, Atlantic Monthly\, and The Smithsonian. He has also had numerous commissions from the US Postal Service\, recently a set of Christmas stamps in 2023. His free lecture will be at 11 a.m. in Room 144 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. \nManchess’ projects and commissions are varied and vast in scope. In 2011\, the National Geographic Society sent him on an expedition to illustrate the adventures of the first discovery of an actual pirate ship; this led to the traveling exhibition\, “Real Pirates: The Untold Story of The Whydah\, from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship.” In 2017\, his first ‘widescreen novel\,’ which he wrote and illustrated\, Above the Timberline\, was released. Thirty of the 120+ paintings from the book were recently featured in an exhibition at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge\, MA. She has a B.F.A. in Illustration from Paier College of Art and an M.F.A. in Illustration from the University of Hartford. She is an instructor of Digital Illustration at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield\, Connecticut. She is also a committee member for the Change in the Air Foundation Festival in New Haven. \nGagliardi’s work has been in many publications\, including Yankee Brew News\, 3×3 Magazine\, Collective Arts Brewing 1st – 4th Edition Zines\, Connecticut Magazine\, Hartford Magazine\, New Haven Living Magazine\, The Sacramento News Review\, Ink Magazine\, The Hartford Courant\, The New Haven Advocate\, The New London Day and Tarnished Magazine. \nHer client list of breweries across the U.S. includes Austin Street Brewery\, Portland\, Maine; Elm City Social\, New Haven; Housatonic River Brewing\, New Milford; and Fifty Fifty Brewing Company\, Truckee\, California\, among others. \nGagliardi’s work was recognized in 2021 by USA Today’s Top 10 Beer Labels.
