SUMMARY:Kathwari Honors Program Public Talk
DESCRIPTION:KATHWARI HONORS PROGRAM PUBLIC TALK: The Kathwari Honors Program will welcome Dr. Brandon Brown\, author of “Sharing our Science: How to Write and Speak STEM\,” at 7 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus. Brown will discuss “Science Miscommunication: A Lighthearted Diagnostic Approach to a Serious Problem.” The public is invited. Register to attend here. \nThe explosion of technology that dominates our culture and economy in the last several years\, such as social media\, remote working culture\, the streaming services changing the broadcast industries\, medical and pharmaceutical research\, and artificial intelligence\, has made the ability to communicate clearly about science and technology a premium skill. So it’s not a luxury but a necessity for students in STEM fields as well as established professionals to learn and apply the kinds of lessons and strategies that Brown has culled from his own work and his research on the Apollo Moon Mission. Brown was on campus several years ago as one of the first winners of the Housatonic Book Award from the MFA in Creative and Professional Writing for his biography “Planck: Driven by Vision.” As he demonstrated then\, Brown’s work is interdisciplinary and adaptable to any field of science and technology\, and we warmly invite guests from local and regional technology firms. \nBrown is a professor of Physics and a communications specialist at the University of San Francisco. He has written for Slate\, Smithsonian and Scientific American. He also has served as deputy director at the Green Science Policy Institute and as a senior writing coach for the Strictly Speaking Group.

SUMMARY:Self-Care Fair
DESCRIPTION:SELF-CARE FAIR: The Institute for Holistic Health Studies will present a Self-Care Fair from 12:30 – 3 p.m. in White Hall room 127. Stopping to assess and identify what we need in the moment — whether a chance to stop and catch our breath\, a little time out to spend with a friend\, enjoy a cup of tea\, or take a walk outside — is an important part of self care and attention to our physical\, mental\, emotional and spiritual health. Join us as we share information and learn ways to take care of yourself — you are a special person and deserve it!

SUMMARY:Anxiety Post-Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:ANXIETY IN THE POST-COVID-19 WORLD:  The World Health Organization reported that the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a 25% increase in prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide\, and just a few months ago the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health reported the COVID-19 Pandemic was associated with worse mental health and accelerated brain development in adolescents. These negative mental health outcomes throughout the world can impact social interactions and relationships\, and they are likely to be evident in problematic social anxiety for some time to come. Yet around 50% of the patients treated for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) will not respond to first-line treatment such as antidepressant therapy. That means there is a lot of room for improvement\, such as integrative and naturopathic care! Join Dr. Shawn M. Carney\, naturopathic physician at Northeast Natural Medicine\, LLC\, at 7 p.m. in White Hall 127\,  and review the scientific literature for how evidence-based herbal medicine\, specialty testing\, effective use of vitamins\, minerals and neurotransmitters\, acupuncture and lifestyle medicine can help! \nThis event is free and open to the entire WCSU community and the general public \nThis event is sponsored by the Institute for Holistic Health Studies at WCSU.
