{"id":10067797,"date":"2024-09-03T09:34:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T13:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/events\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=48220"},"modified":"2024-09-06T16:26:41","modified_gmt":"2024-09-06T20:26:41","slug":"2024-virtual-ct-lake-symposia","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/events\/calendar\/2024-virtual-ct-lake-symposia\/2024-09-23\/","title":{"rendered":"2024 Virtual CT Lake Symposia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2024 VIRTUAL CONNECTICUT LAKE SYMPOSIA:\u00a0<\/strong>In continuation of the series that began in 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/\">Department of Biology<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctlakes.org\/\">Connecticut Federation of Lakes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DEEP\">Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection<\/a>, will host three virtual 2024 Regional Lake Communities Symposia: \u201cThe March of Hydrilla in Connecticut &amp; Reclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla\u201d at <span style=\"color: #c70000\">7 p.m.<\/span> on <strong>Monday, Sept. 23<\/strong>; \u201cAquatic Invasive Species Grants in Connecticut\u201d at <span style=\"color: #c70000\">7 p.m.<\/span> on <strong>Monday, Oct. 21; <\/strong>and \u201cManaging Aquatics Invasive Plants\u201d at <span style=\"color: #c70000\">7 p.m.<\/span> on <strong>Monday, Nov. 18.<\/strong> To register, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/lake-symposium-2024\/\">www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/lake-symposium-2024\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Sept. 23<\/strong> discussion about \u201cThe March of <em>Hydrilla<\/em> in Connecticut\u201d and \u201cReclaiming the Connecticut River from <em>Hydrilla<\/em>\u201d will feature WCSU Limnology Instructor Larry Marsicano, Brawley Consulting Group LLC; Greg Bugbee, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, Office of Aquatic Invasive Species, who will address \u201cThe March of Hydrilla\u201d and Dr. Benjamine P. Sperry, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center, who will speak about \u201cReclaiming the Connecticut River from Hydrilla.\u201d A question-and-answer session will follow.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Oct. 21<\/strong>, the topic will be \u201cAquatic Invasive Species Grants in Connecticut.\u201d Marsicano will be joined by Matthew Goclowski, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Fisheries Division and AIS Grants Oversight Committee, who will share \u201cFive Years into Grants for the Control of Aquatic Invasive Species in Connecticut.\u201d A discussion will follow by lake and river community stakeholders about their projects funded through the Connecticut Lakes, Rivers, Ponds Preservation account.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, on <strong>Nov. 18<\/strong>, \u201cManaging Aquatics Invasive Plants\u201d will be the focus of discussion. Marsicano will be joined by Jeff Arpin and Al Fichtel from the Amston Lake District, who will discuss \u201cThwarting the Spread of Eurasian Watermilfoil at Amston Lake in Hebron, Lebanon and Colchester, Connecticut.\u201d Also on the program will be Dr. Ken Wagner, Water Resource Services, who will speak about \u201cPutting the RAPID in Rapid Response: Considerations for Effective Reaction to Aquatic Invasive Species.\u201d Following an audience Q&amp;A, WestConn Professor of Biology Dr. Theodora Pinou will deliver closing remarks and next steps.<\/p>\n<p>The symposia are free and the public is invited to join in via WebEx.
