GALLERY OPENING – ‘THE CIRCE EFFECT: WOMEN’S CREATIVE POWER RECLAIMS THE NARRATIVE’: <\/strong>The\u00a0Gallery<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0Visual and Performing Arts Center<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0Western Connecticut State University<\/a>\u00a0will present \u201cThe Circe Effect: Women\u2019s Creative Power Reclaims the Narrative,\u201d\u202ffeaturing the work of\u00a0Madeleine Conover<\/a>,\u00a0Donna Dodson<\/a>,\u00a0Katiushka Melo<\/a>,\u00a0Cheryl Mukherji<\/a>,\u00a0Dana Robinson<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Chelsea Steinberg Gay<\/a>. The exhibit will be on view from\u00a0February 8 \u2013 March 3, 2024<\/strong>. The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on\u00a0Thursday, Feb.8<\/strong>, during which Melo will perform. The exhibit is inspired by themes explored in the best-selling novel \u201cCirce\u201d by\u00a0Madeline Miller<\/a>. The narrator is Circe herself, goddess and sorceress from the ancient Greek epic, the \u201cOdyssey.\u201d The New York Times called the novel \u201cA bold and subversive retelling of the goddess\u2019 story \u2026 recasting the most infamous female figure from the \u2018Odyssey\u2019\u202fas a hero in her own right.\u201d In the novel, Circe takes ownership of her story and tells it on her own terms, thereby releasing herself from the constraints of the Western cultural imagination that often presents her one dimensionally as a dangerous, seductive witch.<\/p>\n

Miller\u2019s methodology has struck a cultural chord by addressing the familiar feminist principles of women\u2019s power and agency, and how they are received when women orchestrate the narrative, but also by challenging and even recasting stereotypes.\u202fCollectively, the work of the artists gathered in the exhibition addresses these subjects from contemporary points of view. The exhibit includes works in sculpture, painting, photography, performance, installation, printmaking and drawing. Additionally, a \u201cCirce\u201d book discussion group for students will be co-presented by the WCSU libraries and the Department of Art, with books donated by the Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) Big Read.<\/p>\n

The Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center is located on the second floor of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university\u2019s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension, Danbury.
