{"id":278,"date":"2019-09-06T15:49:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T15:49:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/faculty-handbook\/?page_id=278"},"modified":"2022-09-01T15:41:29","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T15:41:29","slug":"guidelines-for-managing-inappropriate-behavior-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/faculty-handbook\/policies-pertaining-to-students\/guidelines-for-managing-inappropriate-behavior-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Guidelines for Managing Inappropriate Behavior in the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following is to help you with the proper procedures if any of the following types of behavior happen in your classroom.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 70%\"><strong>Physical Assault<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Never put yourself in a harmful situation!<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Call the Police Department immediately at 9-1-1.<\/li>\n<li>Have the students in the class move into the hallway away from the situation.<\/li>\n<li>File a report to send to the Dean of Student Affairs Office, attention University Judicial Officer.<\/li>\n<li>Notify your department chair.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 70%\"><strong>Psychological\/Emotional Emergency or Inappropriate Outbursts in the Classroom<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>This could be anything from panic attacks, violent outbursts or emotional outburst that do not cease. If the student has violent outburst or panic attacks, call the police immediately at 9-1-1.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ask the student to stop the behavior and to talk with the professor after the class.<\/li>\n<li>If the behavior doesn\u2019t stop, ask the student to leave the class.<\/li>\n<li>If the student doesn\u2019t comply, call the Police Department at 9-1-1.<\/li>\n<li>File a report and send to Dean of Student Affairs Office, attention University Judicial Officer.<\/li>\n<li>Notify your department chairperson.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 70%\"><strong>Serious Injury, Illness or Accident (Includes Alcohol or Drug Related)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Do not touch the student or any bodily fluids for their safety and yours. Do not transport student(s) to the hospital!<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Call the Police Department 9-1-1.<\/li>\n<li>Notify the Dean of Student Affairs office.<\/li>\n<li>Advise the student of campus resources according to his\/her needs. (i.e.\/Counseling Center, Health Services)<\/li>\n<li>File a report and send to Dean of Student Affairs office, Attention University Judicial Officer.<\/li>\n<li>Notify your department chairperson.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 70%\"><strong>Bias-Related Statements<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Any language or other acts that are harassing\/intimidating and directed towards individuals or groups because of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and physical or mental disability.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Be supportive of the victim. If they feel threatened, intimidated or harassed, or if a crime has been committed, advise them to contact the Police Department and report the incident.<\/li>\n<li>Confront the student doing this inappropriate behavior to stop this behavior and to speak with them after class.<\/li>\n<li>If the behavior doesn\u2019t stop, ask the student to leave the class.<\/li>\n<li>If the student doesn\u2019t comply, call the Police Department 9-1-1.<\/li>\n<li>File a report and send to Dean of Student Affairs Office, attention University Judicial Officer.<\/li>\n<li>Notify your department chairperson.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The form for the documentation of inappropriate behavior is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/faculty-handbook\/appendices-all-forms\/\">appendix<\/a> of this handbook<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>Provost, June 2007; Updated July 2011; Updated June 2012<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is to help you with the proper procedures if any of the following types of behavior happen in your classroom.
