I have been teaching courses on Latin American History at WCSU since 2006. More recently I have also been teaching classes on Atlantic Slavery. When it’s my turn I also teach History 100, the introductory course for History majors. I always enjoy this as I love having long conversations about footnotes and citations.

Research Interests and Publications:

My research focus is nineteenth-century Colombia. My book, Salt and the Colombian State. Local Society and Regional Monopoly in Boyacá, 1821-1900 (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2012) was translated and published as La sal y el Estado colombiano. Sociedad local y monopolio regional en Boyacá, 1821-1900 (Editorial Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, 2010), which is pretty much my career highlight. I’ve published a few other articles on Colombia (including one on fiscal history) and am working on a second book examining petitions for clemency by people accused of the crime of “treason, sedition, and rebellion” during the civil wars that took place between 1832 and 1858. I have also published a few critical essays on the African Brazilian cultural practice of Capoeira.

Warner Hall 216 Office Phone: 203 837 8449 Email: RosenthalJ@wcsu.edu Education: Ph.D. in History, Columbia University, 2001 M.A. in History, Columbia University, 1992 B.A. in History, Wesleyan University, 1988 Teaching Interests: I am a historian of Latin American History.
