HON 398 – Professor Meredith Miller

Modes of Inquiry: Textual Analysis, Historical, Social and Cultural Analysis, Artistic Creation and Analysis

Course Description:

This course will provide an opportunity for the study and practice of the "photobook." You will learn about the history of the photobook from early travel logs and records of the Civil War to contemporary artist books. This history will consist of illustrated lectures, discussions of text and images, as well as field trips to Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Complementing your study of the history of the photobook, you will also work towards developing a narrative photographic series by editing and sequencing a photobook using Adobe Lightroom’s “Book” module and publishing through the online company Blurb. Key concepts throughout the course will focus on narrative, sequencing, and editing. Students will also be required to participate in a discussion board and conduct a short research paper focusing on a photobook from Western Connecticut State University Archives and Special Collections.
