Course Description:<\/h3>\n
\n\t

An in-depth study of jazz as a true \u201cworld music:\u201d from its roots in African communal music and American folk music, through its emergence as a popular dance music in the<\/span> early 20<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> century<\/span> to its present status as an art form.\u00a0 <\/span>The course will rely on analysis and discussion of the individual artists who were prominent and essential to the development of the music as well as societal <\/span>realities and <\/span>trends that influenced these artists.<\/span> The course <\/span>is designed to trace<\/span> the historical development of jazz and to recognize current trends\/ideas\/philosophies of performance and pedagogy <\/span>with<\/span>in their historical context<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Topics covered will include <\/span>the music\u2019s <\/span>African and American origins, Ragtime, New Orleans, <\/span>the s<\/span>wing<\/span> era<\/span>, <\/span>the b<\/span>e-<\/span>b<\/span>op<\/span> revolution<\/span>, <\/span>hard bop, the <\/span>avant<\/span> garde<\/span>, <\/span>fusion, <\/span>neo-classicism<\/span> and Contemporary music.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
