The\u00a0programs are flexible and kept up to date. They can\u00a0accommodate students who plan to continue with graduate\u00a0studies in mathematics or related fields as well as those\u00a0who want to enter the profession directly from college.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"LEFT\"><strong>Mission<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The WCSU Department of Mathematics supports the\u00a0University\u2019s mission as an accessible, responsive, and creative\u00a0intellectual resource for the people and institutions\u00a0of Connecticut. We strive to meet the mathematical\u00a0needs of a diversified student body through instruction,\u00a0scholarship, and public service. The Department aspires\u00a0to provide students with the background in mathematics\u00a0and mathematics education necessary to be successful in\u00a0their chosen careers and to be productive members of\u00a0society.<\/p>\n<p>Mathematics is a core component of education for\u00a0the 21st century, forming a basis of modern technological\u00a0society. As such, it must be at the forefront of topics\u00a0stressed by a public university. Mathematics is a tool for\u00a0developing a technologically literate citizenry.<\/p>\n<p>Both an art and a science, mathematics remains at\u00a0the heart of a liberal arts education. Learning mathematics\u00a0enables a person to think logically, solve problems,\u00a0and delve beneath the surface of many varied and seemingly\u00a0unrelated subjects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To accomplish this mission, the department:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepares students in mathematics through its major\u00a0offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.<\/li>\n<li>Prepares students with strong skills in mathematical\u00a0communication, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning,\u00a0and connections to related areas.<\/li>\n<li>Enhances the lifetime preparation of students so they\u00a0are mathematically and technologically literate members\u00a0of society.<\/li>\n<li>Provides needed resources for continuing education\u00a0and retraining in mathematics for regional citizens currently\u00a0employed and those who are switching fields.<\/li>\n<li>Shares its expertise in mathematics, mathematics education,\u00a0and statistics with many departments within the university as well as a wide variety of businesses\u00a0and schools outside the university.<\/li>\n<li>Conducts basic and applied research in the fields of\u00a0mathematics and mathematics education.<\/li>\n<li>Provides developmental mathematics courses for students entering the university who are not adequately<\/li>\n<li>Provides a personalized learning environment for students of mathematics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mathematics programs offered by the department are\u00a0designed to meet the needs of students interested in pure\u00a0or applied mathematics or mathematics education.
