{"id":1074,"date":"2019-07-17T18:19:11","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/wellness-wednesday-workshops-2017\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:19:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:19:11","slug":"wellness-wednesday-workshops-2017","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/wellness-wednesday-workshops-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU 2017 &#8211; WCSU to host wellness workshops"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/ihhs\/\">Institute  for Holistic Health Studies<\/a> (IHHS), housed within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/\">Western Connecticut State  University<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/hpx\/\">Department  of Health Promotion and Exercise Sciences<\/a> (HPX),\u00a0will sponsor a series of \u201cWellness  Wednesday Workshops\u201d in spring 2017 to encourage the community and students to live healthier,  happier lives and manage stress effectively.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>These  free, public workshops will be at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in Room 127 of White  Hall on the university\u2019s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feb. 1:<\/strong> \u201cHealthy Eating on a Budget\u201d  with Registered Dietician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/sps\/fbiobalk.asp\">Dr. Elizabeth Balk<\/a>. Balk will discuss how to choose  food that is good for the body, but not bad for the pocketbook. <\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feb. 15: <\/strong>\u201cYoga for Everybody\u201d  with Registered Yoga Teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotusgardensyoga.com\/events\/\">Lara  Ward<\/a>,  director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotusgardensyoga.com\/\">Lotus Gardens Yoga School<\/a> in Sherman, and HPX  students. Yoga is not about  twisting the body into the shape of a pretzel. Anyone who can breathe and  stretch, can do yoga. Ward will demonstrate the benefits of yoga for body, mind  and spirit.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n  <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mar. 8:<\/strong> \u201cHerbs for Better  Health\u201d with Master Herbalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twinstartribe.com\/about\/\">Lupo  Passero<\/a>,  director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twinstarherbal.com\/\">Twin Star Herbs<\/a> in New Milford. The immune system goes into  overdrive, especially at this time of year, to fight off colds and flu. Passero  will show how common herbs can be used to support and strengthen the immune  system and promote good health.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mar. 29:<\/strong> \u201cAromatherapy\u201d with  HPX Department Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/hpx\/faculty.asp\">Dr. Robyn Housemann<\/a> and HPX students. Housemann will explore how essential  oils from plants and trees can have a positive effect on the body, how some  oils are uplifting and energizing while others have a calming effect, and how they  can be incorporated them into daily life.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n  <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>April 5:<\/strong> \u201cCrystals for Healing\u201d  with Advanced Crystal Master <a href=\"http:\/\/maryoquendo.com\/\">Mary  Oquendo<\/a>.  Crystals and gemstones  have been used for centuries not only for jewelry and decoration, but for their  health benefits. Oquendo will explain the energy of crystals and how this  energy can be used to promote better health and wellness.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>April 12:<\/strong> \u201cLaw of Attraction\u201d  with Certified Life Coach <a href=\"http:\/\/createwithyourthoughts.com\/\">Darlene Alvarez Maddern<\/a>. Maddern will explain the power of  positive thinking and how to use it. <\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>May 3:<\/strong> \u201cEmotional Freedom  Technique\u201d (EFT) with Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Jennifer Salkin. EFT, often known as \u201cTapping,\u201d can  be used to release negative thoughts and emotions. The workshop will explore  how to apply this technique in daily life.<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n    <\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>IHHS Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/ihhs\/contact.asp\">Christel Autuori<\/a> organized the  workshops. <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people\u00a0think health and wellness are determined only by  diet and exercise,\u201d Autuori said, \u201cbut wellness is multi-dimensional,  encompassing the mind\/body connection, spirituality, relationships and communication,  and\u00a0connections to nature and the environment. The series of Wellness  Wednesday workshops is designed to bring greater awareness to the many aspects  and\u00a0influences on our health and well-being, and to introduce easy-to-use  practices and techniques that can be incorporated into our daily lives.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>The workshops are one of the many educational  offerings from the HPX department and the IHHS at WCSU. The mission of the IHHS is to  provide the university and Danbury area communities with an opportunity to  engage in and explore different aspects of holistic and integrative health  through programming and instruction.
