DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014 Between going to class, studying and working, students at Western Connecticut State University<\/a> are busy. That doesn\u2019t, however, stop them from giving back to the community by committing to tens of thousands of volunteer hours every year.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014<\/strong>, from 9 to 11 a.m., in an effort to highlight the impact that these students make throughout the community, the university will hold \u201cWestern Day of Service<\/a>.\u201d Two hundred students, faculty and staff will canvas the city to help out a variety of charitable organizations and agencies. The goal of the event is to help the community, to recognize WCSU students and their commitment to community, and to create an awareness of the opportunity and the value of volunteerism as part of a college education. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know there\u2019s a lot of community service going on that involves our students,\u201d said WCSU Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Walter Cramer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Among the places the WCSU volunteers will serve are Ann\u2019s Place<\/a>, The Danbury Railway Museum<\/a>, the Danbury Fire Department<\/a>, Tarrywile Park<\/a> and Ellsworth Avenue Elementary Schoo<\/a>l. Those helping the Danbury Music Center<\/a> will be assisting with auditions for its annual performance of \u201cThe Nutcracker.\u201d Those helping at the Danbury Public Library<\/a> will be tagging books, while others will be helping to serve breakfast to those in need at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House<\/a>. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents are looking at community service as something they expect their university to support,\u201d Cramer said. \u201cI see this event as a win-win \u2013 we can promote what\u2019s already happening and attract students who are interested in becoming part of community service.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In a continuing effort to promote community service at the university, Cramer said he is in the process of making it easier for students to get involved by creating a website for community agencies to post opportunities. Cramer also said that many of the university\u2019s sports teams already dedicate time to helping in the community. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To date, \u201cWestern Day of Service\u201d has received a commitment of support from many groups and athletic teams from the university, including the women\u2019s basketball team<\/a>, the men\u2019s lacrosse<\/a> and women\u2019s lacrosse<\/a> teams, the WCSU Education Club<\/a>, the Latin American Student Organization<\/a>, the men\u2019s baseball team<\/a>, the women\u2019s softball team<\/a>, the women\u2019s swimming and diving team<\/a>, Honors Program<\/a>, Office of Housing & Residence Life<\/a>, Accounting Society<\/a>, Greek Council<\/a>, Cheerleading Team<\/a> and Student Affairs.<\/p>\n


\n \u201cWhen the work is done for the day,\u201d Cramer said, \u201cwe\u2019ll bring everyone back to campus to celebrate all the good work that was done that day around Danbury. We hope that many of the volunteers will go to the football game that day to support the football team and to be recognized at halftime.\u201d<\/p>\n
