{"id":1130,"date":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wcsu.wpengine.com\/news-archives\/womenshistorymonth2010\/"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","slug":"womenshistorymonth2010","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/news-archives\/womenshistorymonth2010\/","title":{"rendered":"WCSU series to celebrate Women&#8217;s History Month in March"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"sharingTools\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/sharingtools.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<div id=\"breadcrumb\"><!-- #include virtual=\"\/include\/breadcrumb.inc\" --><\/div>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n    &#013;<\/p>\n<p><strong>DANBURY, CONN. <\/strong>\u2014  Western Connecticut State University will celebrate Women\u2019s History Month in March with a series of film, theatre and lecture programs exploring women\u2019s roles in history, culture and contemporary society.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor of History Dr. Katherine Allocco, one of the organizers of the university\u2019s Women\u2019s History Month series, said the goal is to showcase women\u2019s achievements. \u201cIt\u2019s about recognizing and acknowledging the great women of history,\u201d she observed. \u201cThere are so many women who have done great things, so let\u2019s celebrate!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s History Month events will be held at various locations on the WestConn Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Admission to all events will be free and open to the public. Following is the series schedule: <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Friday, March 5<\/strong>, at 7:30 p.m., women from diverse backgrounds will recall their female mentors in a theatrical performance titled \u201cThe Mentoring Monologues\u201d in the Student Center Theater. Allocco described the production as similar in format to \u201cThe Vagina Monologues\u201d by Eva Ensler. \u201cWe have a real mix of all ages, people from the university and the community, and various ethnic groups represented,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Tuesday, March 9<\/strong>, at 4 p.m., Jamison Odone, a student in the Master of Fine Arts in Art program, will sign copies of his new book, \u201cAlice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland,\u201d on the first floor of Warner Hall. Part of his \u201cStickfiguratively Speaking Series,\u201d Odone\u2019s book features stick-figure illustrations to tell his version of Lewis Carroll\u2019s classic \u201cAlice in Wonderland.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Wednesday, March 10<\/strong>, at noon, a WestConn faculty and student panel will discuss \u201cNegotiating Beauty: Bodies, Fashion and Sexuality in our Past and Present\u201d on the first floor of Warner Hall. Panelists will include Professor of History Dr. Marcy May, Assistant Professor of History Dr. Leslie Lindenauer, Professor of Social Sciences Dr. Steven Ward and history graduate student Jessica Gamache.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Wednesday, March 10<\/strong>, at 5:30 p.m., the documentary film \u201cThe Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo\u201d will be shown in the Student Center Theater. Winner of the Sundance Special Jury Prize in Documentary and the inspiration for a 2008 U.N. resolution classifying rape as a weapon of war, the film was shot in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo, depicting how sexual violence has been used as a weapon in this conflict.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Thursday, March 11<\/strong>, at 6 p.m., film excerpts from the documentary \u201cBody of Work\u201d will be shown in the Student Center Theater. After the screening, writer\/director\/producer Kai Beverly-Whittemore will answer questions about her transition from model to filmmaker.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Friday, March 12<\/strong>, at 7 p.m., \u201cThe Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl\u201d will be shown in Screening Room 1 in White Hall. The 1993 documentary film depicts the life of German filmmaker, photographer and artist Leni Riefenstahl, who was best known for her role as director of the 1934 Nazi propaganda film \u201cTriumph of the Will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Wednesday, March 17<\/strong>, at 12:30 p.m., WestConn faculty members will participate in a panel discussion of \u201cWomen and Popular Culture\u201d on the first floor of Warner Hall. Panelists will include Allocco, Assistant Professor of History Dr. Leslie Lindenauer and Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Dr. Abbey Zink.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Wednesday, March 17<\/strong>, at 5:30 p.m., the 2005 film The Education of Shelby Knox\u201d will be screened in the Student Center Theater.
